Yes they did. Including a beat down on TCA. It was just about 3-4 years ago Lake County won the state championship in a blowout game running our granddaddy's offense. In fact, Just about every year a wing T or veer offense will win a state championship. The fact is, however, there are daddies who would rather their boy play QB in a spread offense and go 4-6 instead of playing QB in a veer and go 15-0. I'm sure Bowling has a lot of experience dealing with this and will show the kids who show up with an attitude the bench and go with the kids that buy in completely. That might make for an interesting August this year.

I had no idea that TCA had so many players each year getting football scholarships. Kids want to play for a school that is getting the Ws. I can see there being a QB now and then go to USJ starting 9th grade because daddy thinks he is all that. The problem is, he'll probably end up sitting the bench.

These are the typical statements made about a veer or double wing coach when he is hired. The veer has a lot of double team blocking at the point of attack. When properly coached, two lesser o-linemen will be able to make the blocks. On the backside there are cut blocks. They sting. Add to that the misdirection of the offense and then you have a coach that can win consistently year in and year out. it's not an ideal offense for daddies who envision their son throwing the ball for 3,000 yards. It is an ideal offense for the 95% of the players and fans who simply want to win and do not care what type of offense is run just as long as it wins. So, keep your chin up and try not to suck.

I thought that Ripley was doing better the last few years. I just looked through their last 4 years of Ws and Ls and the scores. I stand corrected. The pain will continue for HHS. There's absolutely nothing in the new hire's performance at Ripley that makes sense with this hire. Nothing. The school board is ultimately to blame for this insanity. The voters of the county are ultimately responsible for the school board. More and more Halls players with college scholarships in mind and needed in order to go to college, should enroll at Dyersburg.

I have never met coach Stigall. I hope he is finally the hire that gets things on track there. I know the talent is in the hallways. I know that they should not be playing at 3-5 away game homecoming each year. They have hired one idiot after another and if the hire is well connected in the town he can lose indefinitely, just stays as long as they want. If they are not from there they get 3-5 years. As to your question, Ripley, where Stigall went with the head coach there a few years back is one example. There was a significant and obvious improvement in Ripley with the very first year. I do not imagine Ripley is the visiting team for many school's homecomings anymore. There was a time frame, once upon a time, a time frame that lasted for about 20 years, that nobody even considered scheduling Halls for their homecoming game. I would like to see that happen again for another 20 year stretch.

Yes. I read the newspaper. The recently fired head coach, according to the newspaper, left the school area, where the field house office is, in a reckless manner. A local police officer on patrol happened to be right there. He turned on his blue lights and siren and the guy still drove another 3 miles before stopping. The coach offered the officer $8,000.00 to go away. (Halls must pay their coach really well) The officer refused and called for backup. At first he said he had 4 beers. Later admitted to 18 beers. LOL. He had a firearm in his vehicle...while drunk. Had to be threatened to be tazed before he would get in the back seat of the patrol car, according to the newspaper report. So that is the "culture" I guess you could say, at HHS. It's difficult to believe that the guy just decided one day to be that stupid. When someone is stupid they're stupid every day. Not just one day a year or so. They're even stupid when they're asleep. I think the word "culture" is for weak kneed, "this will take 10 years to fix" losers. That's my opinion. That's my observation. A good coach proves he's good in year one. Like Heupel did at UT and like many first year high school coaches do every year. It doesn't take 3-5 years to teach kids how to block and tackle.

Really. You think that's all it takes. The "culture"? That's one of the most overused words of the 21st century. I mean, if I hear the word "culture" one more time I might lose my fkn mind. "Care about the program". WTH does that mean? So, did the last 10 coaches there not "care about the program". Did winning or losing not matter to them? If not, that's something that a halfway decent principal and/or A.D. should pick up on bout halfway through his first year. So, that would be negligence on their part to wait until the guy drinks three six packs of beer and then crashes out onto the street in his truck and refuses to pull over for a few miles and then offer the cop $8,000... and Then fire him. It's okay not to care about the program, but, if you get so drunk you can't fish and then try to drive your truck through town, and, most importantly, you get caught by the law, then, boy, you're done coaching here! And if you offer the cop a bribe then, boy, you ain't gonna be teaching here either. Wow, that's leadership right there now. Hopefully the new guy excels at teaching blocking, tackling, game preparation, and team building. I wish him the best.

There are better coaches in Middle and East Tennessee. The skill level at the middle school level of middle and east is on average head and shoulders above west Tennessee. West TN middle school coaches (with some exceptions as always) do not take their jobs seriously and do little to no serious off season conditioning. West TN has some outstanding high school coaches. Trenton, McKenzie, Union City, Dyersburg, Covington, Munford to name a few. However, the majority of the rest are just drawing a paycheck and put little real effort into it. This results in a lot of blow out wins for the more talented and harder working coaches therefore not preparing them well for the championship games. The officiating at the state championship games has also played a big role in a lack of gold balls as well. From the game announcer on NFHS to the officiating on the field it is obviously tilted in favor of the middle and east Tennessee schools.

You are lying. Look, I never met the guy. I'm a numbers guy myself. When I look over the schedules since 2011 I do not see the validity of your statement at all. "frequently had less than 25 kids". False. Might have been a year or two of that is all out of 12 years. "Frequently" makes your statement a lie. "often beat very good teams with 50-60 players," I do not see that in looking over the 12 years of schedules either. Tradertwo, for some reason you are lying. Anyone can stay on this website, go to the schedules section, and see that for themselves. Maybe you are the guys daddy, or brother, or whatever. I do not know the motive. They barely beat TCA. That's what got him fired. ECS expects to be capable of beating USJ each year. They have played many close games against USJ that were not decided until the final minutes. USJ blew TCA out of the water again this past year. Yet, ECS barely beat TCA. So, it was determined that the program needs a new coach.

Coaching high school football is not nuclear science. Most people like to make their jobs sound like the most difficult in the world that only a small fraction of the population could possibly do well. That's human nature. Head high school football coaches are no exception. For that matter, head middle school football coaches are no exception. Normally athletic directors are totally bought in as well. Maybe this is a form of job insurance for people in every profession. Make people, and especially your boss, think that what you do requires an extremely amount of experience and that maybe .0000000001% of the population can do as well as you are doing. Most people who could have been highly successful high school coaches did not major in education while in college. They went for careers that promised much higher pay. I do not intend to be mean spirited here, I am simply stating the truth. A fact. It is what it is and in this case that is a simple fact. Being a successful high school football coach requires above average intelligence for sure. It requires a lot of intangibles as well. A correct "sense" of who should play what position. A sense of the personality of the team and of each player and thereby knowing how to motivate the individual and the team. Also, how to develop an offensive and defensive game plan that, based on what you have to work with, compared to your opponent each week, give you the best chance of winning instead of thinking they must try to look as much as possible like the teams they see on television each weekend. How many spread teams has Huntingdon's double wing and single wing blown off the field the past several years. Many times the teams they blow out have much larger enrollments than their own. Same with Union City. I saw Lake County win a state championship about three years ago with the QB running the ball 9 times out of 10. Hey, if you have a gunslinger and several exceptional receivers then spread it out and go with the run and gun. Usually, at most high schools, you will not have the athletes to do that. The smaller the school the less often you will.

Stewart made a name for himself at a Church of Christ school, JCS, in Jackson, TN. JCS would not of hired Billy Graham to be a janitor at their school. At JCS if you are not an active member of the "Churches of Christ" then you are not considered for a job there, period. However, coaches can leave JCS, get fired from several other schools, then land one of the highest paying high school head coaching jobs in the state at a BAPTIST school. Something just ain't right about that. He was fired for cause and I'm glad.
