  1. Remember that MBA's 171 was on his back, recklessly fighting off a pin, when the shoulder popped out. To say MBA gave away six points due to inj. default would be inaccurate -- it is my opinion he would have been pinned anyway.
  2. I agree the call was questionable, but as you state, Morales made it a moot point with the last-second takedown.
  3. In one of the best wrestling matches these eyes have ever seen, here are the unofficial results: 171 - Bateman ® def. Turk -- Injury default (Turk's shoulder popped out while he was fighting off a pin in the second period). Ryan 6-0 189 - Jacques (M) def. Garrett -- 10-4 (Jacques pulled away in third). Ryan 6, MBA 3 215 - C. Riley ® def. Swett -- 16-7 (After close first period, Riley dominated the final two). Ryan 10, MBA 3 275 - A. Riley (M) def. Dempsey -- pin 5:00 (low-scoring match prior to pin with less than a minute remaining in third). Ryan 10, MBA 9 103 - Francis (M) def. Griffith -- 6-4 (very even match). MBA 12, Ryan 10 112 - Simpson (M) def. Forte -- pin 3:00 (John Mike is gaining momentum for state). MBA 18, Ryan 10 119 - Yager ® def. MBA kid (Bellet or Deutsch) -- pin 4:15 (Pat Simpson's gamble to move Whitt up paid off big time). MBA 18, Ryan 16 125 - Dunning ® def. MBA kid (Bellet or Deutsch) -- pin :29 (never even broke a sweat -- I'm convinced he woulda pinned everyone through 160). Ryan 22, MBA 18 130 - Oddo ® def. Bradley -- 10-6 (Oddo controlled neutral, but couldn't do much once on top). Ryan 25, MBA 18 135 - MBA kid (Nutkis or McKeithan) def. Walsh -- 8-6 (MBA very nearly pinned in this match). Ryan 25, MBA 21 140 - Morales ® def. Hall -- 3-2 (Easily the match of the night. Tied 1-1 with less than 30 seconds left and with the wrestlers in neutral, Hall was given a point after Morales illegally slammed him into the mat. Down 2-1 with the clock winding, Morales shot and got around for two with the clock showing :01. Place goes bananas). Ryan 28, MBA 21 145 - Bellet (M) def. Murphy -- pin 3:00 (Huge momentum shift here as Bellet got the rally started with a pin. Place continued going bananas throughout the whole match). Ryan 28, MBA 27 152 - Shillinglaw (M) def. Goodrum -- pin 3:50 (definitely MBA's biggest win as Shillinglaw gets the pin, forcing Ryan to pin to win in the last match. With so many people going bananas, Chiquita shoulda worked out a sponsorship for the night). MBA 33, Ryan 28 160 - Mayo ® def. Tate -- 12-3 (Mayo works cradle twice, middle of the mat, with :30 seconds left in first period and again with :45 seconds left in second. Willed by the student section chanting his name, Tate stays off his back, sending the MBA side into bedlam. Unbelievable finish to an unbelievable match). MBA 33, Ryan 32. Match was well reffed (Bowler and J. Simpson) and both crowds behaved themselves. Here's hoping to a rematch in Clarksville.
  4. Charles McTorry (Overton mid-90s) and Chase McTorry (BA 03) Vince Mondelli (Ryan 94) and Matt Mondelli (Ryan late 90s) -- the middle brother Mark would have won it if not for a late-season suspension in 97
  5. In all these threads about the Ryan-MBA match Thursday night, no one has brought up the possibility of the two coaches making any lineup changes. With MBA admittedly an underdog, it's in Frank's best interest to manipulate his lineup any way he can to offset some of the Irish's "guaranteed" wins, just like Connell did with his McCallie lineup against Baylor last week. One of those "guaranteed" wins for the Irish is at 125, where Hiller has proven to be one of the best the state has to offer. It's too bad MBA doesn't have anyone that can challenge Jimmy at 125. An upset there would really have the Irish reeling... wait... oh yeah, I almost forgot. MBA does have a wrestler in its lineup that can challenge Hiller. In fact, the Big Red has a wrestler that has already beaten Hiller twice -- once on the biggest stage of them all and again in the deciding match of the 2003 MBA-Ryan dual. Wrestling fans, get ready for Hiller-Simpson: The Final Meeting. Thursday night, 7 p.m. at Father Ryan. That match alone will be worth the $5 price of admission.
  6. Per the 215 final between BA's J.T. Wash (note the spelling, please; it's not Walsh) and Ryan's Chris Lomas: The way I understood it was that right after the second period ended, Wash took his second injury timeout. His first injury timeout came at the end of the first. According to one very knowledgable fan who I was seated next to, when a wrestler takes a second injury timeout, he forfeits his right to choose. Thus, Wash was not allowed to choose at the beginning of the third, despite Lomas getting the choice at the beginning of the second. All of this, by the way, is a moot point. Didn't matter whether Wash got choice or not. He was able to control the match from all three positions. Also, FYI, according to the on site trainer, Wash was battling a case of walking pneumoniia throughout the tournament, thus the shortness of breath. Great tournament put on by Ryan, although I found it kind of tacky to announce the Titans scores in the middle of the finals. However, their win did draw the crowd's loudest cheer of the day so maybe I should just shut my mouth. And we wonder why this sport isn't more popular...

  9. Michael - in response to your question about the twf site, the address is tennwrestling.com. BuckLateral would have answered your post, but he was probably too busy drooling over the Father Ryan wrestling web site.

  12. Coach Pitt is, I believe, a certified history teacher. I know that's what he taught at Ryan. Superior coach, even better man -- he's gonna make the school principal or AD that picks him a genius someday.
  13. RyanRowdy, You are also forgetting the 36-17 regular season match at Ryan, won by the Irish. Also, the match at the state duals fo determine third and fourth place was filled with JV wrrestlers and non-starting seniors - Frank and Pat agreed before the match it didn't matter who won, so they wanted to wrestle kids who normally didn't get the chance. Should be alot of fun tonight.
