  1. So wpasi you were a boats , huh? Me, I hung out and loaded guns. Nice to know you're a fellow squid! So, look alive shipmate, I think I just heard General Quarters! God Bless you brother and "turn two!" As for the rest of you, you would have to be ex-Navy to understand this lingo!
  2. Thank you. I rarely post on coacht anymore, but as not only a veteran, but a Middle East war veteran, this means a lot. All veterans are my brothers and sisters and we are truly one large fraternity that share a connection that I think only veterans understand. It might sound silly, but I always think of the line from Rambo:First Blood-"We just want our country to love us as much as we loved it." God Bless all my fellow vets.
  3. From all of us veterans on CoachT I want to say I appreciate the shout out. We are a huge fraternity of brothers and sisters who are proud to have served our great nation. Many of us served in war zones, so Veterans Day means so much to us. I'm very proud to have served.
  4. Well I guess this is the same old tired topic of Wartburg football. Someone earlier mentioned the 2010 team that went to the state quarter finals. That seems like a long time ago now, sadly. Someone else also mentioned Larry Davis not wanting to come back last year. Well, I heard the exact opposite from a teacher and coach at Wartburg. The fact is, Davis did want to come back and the retiring principle obliged him. To me , Wartburg needs to send Davis packing at the end of this season and hire a quality coach. From what I hear, Wartburg had a good middle school team this year with several players that could develop into great high school players, if they don't go to Coalfield or somewhere else. I do feel that Wartburg will be back one day and like others on here mention, teams go in cycles. But until Larry Davis and his head shaking excuses are gone, Wartburg will remain on this downward spiral.
  5. Right you are, rt. They actually went to the state quarter finals that year and ran into a buzz saw in Boyd Buchannon that resembled an Alabama team! But yes Coalfield did beat them that year in a great game with a packed house. I really would like to see this rivalry competitive again. Even back in my day, it was always a heated, emotional affair, but I had friends that played for Coalfield, not to mention a relative or two.
  6. Well, like I've stated on here before, I never said what the 86 means, but let's just say I played a few years before you and we did beat Coalfield 3 times. One year we were a decided underdog and still won. Yes, I remember the first years Wartburg moved up to 2a, I was probably in the military at that time. But I do remember the years you refer to. That was the Bill Winstead "dear in the headlights" time when the dogs were so overmatched, most games were a debacle and serious beat downs....kinda like now.
  7. . Hey, I'm not sure what his name is, but who knows, he may take a look at the 2017 version of Larry Davis' "bad news bears" and high tale it to Coalfield!
  8. Reading all of this is actually kind of amusing. Do l think Coalfield recruits? Who knows? Maybe. But I also believe that some of those kids want to play for a top notch team. Someone on here earlier said that Wartburg football has been a mess for 50 years? I can't agree, because I played on a Wartburg team that beat Coalfield three years in a row. Granted, that's been many years ago and Coalfield didn't have the program they do now. But I feel that the dogs are in another Larry Davis "slump" now that won't change until he's gone. I hear Wartburg has a good middle school program that's very well coached and I hear they have a kid that's a heck of a player and all this will bode well for the dogs future on the high school level(providing he doesn't go to Coalfield! Iol!) Anyway I look for Coalfield to roll over the dogs this week and yet again Larry Davis can be heard saying, " the effort wasn't there....I just don't understand...."
  9. . That's a Larry Davis coached team for you. No discipline to be found. Such a sad situation........again!
  10. Actually, his son didn't play for him in the early 90's because I played with his son in the early and mid eighties at Wartburg. But I do agree with much of what you are saying. I heard from a pretty reliable source that a bunch of people applied for the head coaching job, but for whatever insane reason they brought back Larry Davis. As an alumni of Wartburg, this ticked me off. lm not necessarily close to the program, but I just can't stand Davis's style. His teams show no enthusiasm, he stands there with his hands behind his back and after countless beat downs, he says stuff like "we just quit....I just don't understand it." Sorry but that gets old after so long. As far as Ronnie goes, I've known him a long time and I must say he always treated me well as a teenager and I was friends with his son back in the day, but he's no football coach. What will happen with the program? Who knows? But I think everybody in the county should be proud of what Coalfield has accomplished on the football field. They have great coaches, hard working, committed players, and great community support. It would be nice to see Wartburg competitive again, but I'm not holding my breath.
  11. Yeah, when and where is the Roane County Jamboree this year?
  12. . Nope, nary a one. But I do know that it's happened on occasion the past 10 years or so, because I went to school with their parents. By the way, I'm not close to the Wartburg program anymore, I just go by what I hear and read. Really I suppose I couldn't blame those kids for going to Coalfield, especially if they want to play for a top notch coaching staff and avoid the current misery at Wartburg. Like another poster said earlier, maybe Wartburg has become a boys basketball school.
  13. . Yeah, as a Wartburg alum and former player this whole situation sickens me. It's true Coalfield gets some of Wartburg's better athletes, especially in football. The guy coaching Wartburg now shouldn't be and from what I heard it's just one big messed up deal. It's funny too. Thirty years ago it would have been Cardinal sin for a Wartburg kid to go to Coalfield. But back then we beat Coalfield year in and year out. I hope the Burg works all this out, because it's hard to believe just 5 years ago the dogs were in the state quarter finals!
