  1. Now we're getting somewhere. So mykidsdad is right on target. I understand and agree with what you are saying and therefore it seems to me that the weight room is a mixed bag for the high school athlete. In light of these notions it seems that speed work and agility may take presidence. My son graduated a few years ago and I disagreed with the weight training program at his school at the time. I was mum because the coaches produced results. But those results were based on endurance training not so much weight training. My view through his career was that his Martial Arts training was his claim to fame. And now I believe that wholeheartedly. However, that regimen is not for many. High school coaches hands are tied when it comes to weight training...I see that now. My next question is, do you think squatting below horizontal is an accident waiting to happen for the high school athlete?
  2. And Bucksfan, your view on working to failure on each set. Obviously, this is intended to produce bulk so at some point one must change gears...I understand that...just curious because most high school coaches think working to failure in not the way to produce the intended results. Of course, again depending on position, system and goal.
  3. Thanks for your input guys. Bucksfan, what are your views on the cardio aspect of the lift? Is it counter-productive to limit rest time between sets? Or does it add to the overall effect of the burn. Is other words, should the athlete be allowed to recouperate between sets or continue before resting is complete?
  4. Our schedule says Enka away. Enkas' website says away also. I'm thinking Volman told me when it was first scheduled that it was away so I think Enkas' site is wrong. Anyone can confirm this?
  5. I have started this thread a few times over the years and with not many takers. Just think it could be productive to share ideas. I am a tried and true believer in 3 alternate days of full body workout with running drills on the off days. These young men need time for their body to recover and their mind to refocus. I am not an advocate of 5 & 6 day weight workouts. I also believe in working to failure otherwise there is nothing to recover from. In addition the workout should be timed so as to create an aerobic workout. For example: only 45 seconds between each set. As far as running, I was always an advocate of endurance. I have seen the benefit of it. In high school a large percentage of starters play both ways which requires endurance. In college many positions (at least skill) are managed by committee. Meaning short bursts of speed is more important than outright endurance. As of late I have had my running philosophy questioned by someone who advocates speed work only. I'm considering it's merits. Of course, much of this depends on the position and the type of offense. Anyone care to chime in?
  6. Question is not for me but my understanding is he has gone to work and won't be playing sports.
  7. Only used "ACL" as an example of a rehab time frame. Miniscus should be much quicker rehab dependign on the invasion. Please J...the read responsibility is squarely in the lap of the QB...we know this. BUT...many times the QB hands off when he should not...and many times he doesn't hand off when he should. Bottom line is the RB has the exact same responsibility. The blocking scheme in this offense is not cut and dried. If the defender commits then the lineman obliges him and drives him in that committed direction. That's why there is no predetermined "hole". Hence the RB's need to read the linemans que in order to hit second gear. Otherwise the RB is dead in the water. That's why this offense is glorious to the "correct" RB...i.e. one that can make the read. A RB in this offense can have all the speed in the world but if he cannot read then he should play another position. Historically, the QB's and the RB's in this offense who were successful were masters of the read. I am not writing our starting QB off. I am an advocate of his. He has an arm. I hope for his quick return. But the Soph must come up to speed and now. He will get playing time.
  8. Hamstring injuries can sometimes be long term in scope. Not always, but many times reoccurring. Miniscus tears used to be considered small fry, however now surgery is performed which in and of itself requires substantial rehab. The Soph kid at QB could be long term...depending. Which will put the Frosh from CHMS square in the backup role. No doubt this will take away the long ball capability of Alex. Rehab for a severed ACL is 6 months minimum however a minuscus tear should not be quite the same. In the past, Seth Wattersons hamstring injury was reoccurring...for arguments sake. These injuries fortunately have the summer to heal. I hope the disabled mend well and come back strong. On the brighter side, I think Wagner at RB was a bold experiment. My understanding was that no one understands the read responsibilities of the RB out of this Zone, Read offense. Which is crutial. Hutchins and Wagner both posess the intellect to understand this concept. Whether they have the grit to trancend to this position is yet to be seen. However, Wagner posted a 4.5 flat at the Atlanta combine along with a 4.3 shuttle. Yes Science Hill will smoke that but those numbers are on par with the best of South's RB's of recent memory. The RB's ability to read the defense is the single most important facet of this offense. Escape maneuvers are second. Speed is third. Science Hill proved last year that speed does not a RB make. It is a nice addition to an otherwise complicated skill set but if speed is all you have then run track. I am interested to see what is going on with the Black Bird. Will try to make it to North...who, by the way, I hear will have the best team it has had in years. Spring ball is always iffy so no need to be concerned.
  9. Otis, that hater mentality that you speak of is not a one way street. It's the Hatfields and the McCoys and it will always be. Whether we are under one roof or not. And you can make DB the largest school in the state, which by your method it would be by a large margin, but nothing would change. If DB couldn't win a state championship with the group they had last year then it ain't going to happen. Everyone thinks it's a numbers game, but the most successful schools in the state, athletically speaking, are not the largest. In fact, the largest schools in the state are the worst. It's much more complicated than just numbers. Take the Memphis area for example. Some of the worst football schools in the state but more scholarships and more professional athletes come from that area than many others. The Knoxville area schools and the Rutherford county schools are the most competitive in the state...period. And where are the highest paid coaches in the state? Meanwhile, where are the lowest paid coaches in the state? DB has 2000 students and they get the cream of the crop of the local football talent. South is bordering on a reduction in classification and has been since Stacy Carter first came to South. South's claim to fame is not numbers it is their in your face attitude. They do more with less...in spite of coaching staffs that don't give a hoot and administrators that allow it to breed. Football, of course, being the exception...and maybe Soccer. Why do South people not want to go to DB? Because they don't feel it is trading up. They know what they bring to the table and they feel the city needs us...not that we need them. DB is just not Maryville. I mean, starting salary for a teacher in the city is 12K higher than in the county. What's up with that? I mean, the city and the county are in the same country...correct? I could go on and on about the unequalities but the bottom line is the South people do what they have to do to be successful and even though we are jealous of all your facilities and nice things we choose to continue to fight our age old battles the old fashioned way. We were born the underdog and it keeps us hungry. And every year we think is our year and you city people always laugh...but the difference between us and you is...we don't give up.
  10. Where does that leave Sullivan County? Too many people left hung out to dry. IMOP the only logical fix for this situation is a Metropolitan School System.
  11. It's report card time. My undercover work has me worried. Science Hill has the most speed I have seen in years coming up this fall. D1 speed! And lots of it. What about it '04?...Will Bristol rebuild? I would think, yes. But would like to hear some stuff. DB will be really good. Skill might be on par with last year...and maybe even better especially in the air game. FB...can you bring us up to date on the country boys? South will bring big heart like always. Depends on which way the Crowe flies. I look for South to be fighting for the podium. Why, yall still planting the garden? It's time fer a chaw...and some roll and some yaw...some ying and some yang and a hand-off or two. South's got a Quarterback...like always, and DB too...'cause without a Quarterback...well, basketball is just number two.
  12. Otis...rest easy...the South gonna' rise again...
  13. Dang...I could've sworn I just left the DB thread.....
  14. Jack, I have to concede that you have owned us for years. You have to agree that '07 and '08 would have been interesting. But while in 2010 at J Fred at the beginning of the 4th quarter you had dukie in your pants...meanwhile, we on the South side had HO. 2011 might just be the year. The Fued continues...
  15. Jack, how is Tre' Trammell shaping up? I haven't seen him play since middle school.
  16. In all due respect I personally feel that ETSU Football could have been resurected solely form NET athletes. 2005-Present has produced plenty of top shelf athletes from this area. I could fill the O and D roster without even going past Morristown. Not all of these athletes are currently playing at the college level and for various reasons but many of them would have loved to stay home and wear the patch of the Bucconeers. ETSU has become a fine medical science school and their computer science department is not too shabby...not to mention their claim to fame...the history department. I am very proud of what ETSU has become and Johnson City in general. All the while their cost has remained one of the lowest in the east. Many will say this success is directly attributable to the deletion of the football program as advocated by Paul Stanton. And I would agree that ETSU football was in many ways an anchor dregging in shallow water to the detriment of the acedemic progress of the school. However, the disease has passed and the time has come for a new beginning. And ETSU's reputation as a sound acedemic institution is rock solid so I see the time is right. Only problem is the local talent might have been reduced from the banner years of recent memory. However, I for one am an advocate and potential supporter. Just imagine, Curt Phillips, Soloman Duannah, Cody Sensabaugh, Joseph Throp...the list is long and pretty impressive IMOP.
  17. Could be an issue...but I wouldn't be too critical...North has some "knockups" of their own lately...not to mention DB. Could be that the football field is the only place to teach these kids the drill...? Granted, they did not learn it home...but then some of the best homes have produced misfires as well. The bottom line? Good home or bad home...the football field is where the game of life is played. And one of the best ways to make a man. Get rid of the holier than thou attitude and be thankful for what you have. You might be next.
  18. In spite of all the city slicking...it could very well be a banner year for South. They return quite a bit of skill. And Jack, I wouldn't be printing too much of that POS (point of sale...Ha) material just yet. Could be some DB folks forced to wear the Columbia Blue. OMG...do you think either of us will wear the others colors. You weren't at the girls BB game last night. It will never end.... Kingsport City has bitten off more than they can chew this time.
  19. Not sure what Mac's status is. POY - Blakely Burleson All Conference - Not sure how many are chosen but most of them should come from Science Hill. COY - Barry Wade Underclassman of the Year (UOY) - Someone from Science Hill. IMOP, Burleson has no peer when it comes to the all around quentisential player. Outside of the Hill I would rank Mac, Julie Osborne, and Kestner 1, 2 and 3 in that order for AC. Maybe the other DB post is neck and neck. But of those 4 Mac is clearly more valuable on the whole floor. Science Hill obvously has most of the AC team in place. I choose Barry Wade because he did more with less. Barnwell is wonderful but with the talent he had at his disposal he should have been untouchable. Clearly Barry Wade is the COY. UOY...I don't think there is even any competition for this award. Science Hill all the way. Just my opinion.
