You can thank ghost for this one. Does volleyball receive a fair proportion of sports money? Are some teams fundraising for everything they get? Havings parents pay for it? Does the school pay for it? Does the Booster Club pick it up? And is the BC using money from other sports (read: football money) to subsidize volleyball?

What's your experience?

Since I prompted it, I'll start.

The school provides - supplement for coaches, the facility, and supplements the cost of referees (all gate money goes into the general fund - referees are paid from the general fund - if there isn't enough gate money to cover the cost, the general fund covers that cost). That's it. Everything else is paid for by the BC. The exception to that is if a team makes it to state - the general fund (football gate money, etc.) covers what costs it can. As I stated in another thread, the football team has also added money to volleyball when necessary.

Last year the BC raised around $15K for volleyball. This is done through ad sales in our program, concessions at our matches, 1 annual tournament, and donations from local businesses and parents. Our costs for last year (camps, buses, tournaments - 3 overnight, uniforms, balls, concessions, printing costs, etc.) were just under $15K - so we have a small base to start from this year - as we did last.

For comparrison - the football BC, I'm told, raised in excess of $125K last year. Although I'm not certain about this - I understand the schools contribution to all sports is the same as stated for VB (coaches, facilities & refs). Obviously the costs to provide these things aren't the same from sport to sport.

Is that "fair"? I think that depends on what your defininition of "is" is. ;)

Some volleyball teams are better funded than others. Our volleyball team is pretty well funded. We have a huge fundraiser towards the middle of the season, and we have a small one near the beginning. The fundraisers pay for our equipment, refs, and so on. But if we want to get matching bags, or something along those lines, then we have to pay for it out of our pocket.

And some of the funds from the football games go to both volleyball and softball. The volleyball team works the consession stand at the football games, so we get some of the consession stand money, also. The softball team works the basketball consession stand, and they get some of that money. There's also a "tip jar" that we set out during football and basketball games, so we can earn a little extra money.

At our school, all the sports seem to help each other out with funding, so it all works out pretty well. thumb
