Concert band vs. Marching band

Ah, fellow band followers, finally we have it! A board of our own. So, let's start with the question of all time:

Which do you like better, concert band or marching band?

Ah, for me, it's a toss-up. Marching band's definitely more fun because you get to be with your friends and sweat and goof off (er, sometimes. :thumb: ). Plus, it was always fun before competitions leading my little clarinet circle in tuning and pre-comp. pep talks and all.

But I do like the focus and musicality of concert band. Let's face it, marching band definitely doesn't have that hard of music so it's cool to kind of settle in and sight-read hard stuff. I love to sight read! Plus, sometimes you hit that groove where everybody's playing well and in tune and it's gorgeous. :thumb:

By the way, thank you, Coacht, for lettin' us have this board!

Marching band. definately. Why is band under Winter Sports?

Prob because it would be open now since you have to be a plus member to post on fall sports.

Being a former trumpet player I love marching band. Concert was ok but you can only play so many marches till ya get sick of them. My director is still my fav teacher of all time. I really want to see this forum take off. All state is coming up isnt it? Also not long till band camp! (Oh how I miss band camp). I'll close with my fav quote

"If you march to the beat of a different drummer....your probably out of step"

As a former hs band member I would say marching band was more fun because it was easier. But as a current band director and educator, I would say concert season is better for far too many reasons to list.

It seems ridiculous to me to spend nearly six months on three pieces of music. What if all you did in English class was read and rehearse the same 3 poems every day in class? As an English teacher, you wouldn't be employed very long.

Music is not a sport. It is not a competition. It is an art form. When we focus on "we're not as good as they are," then we miss the point. My fellow directors and I should be more concerned with the individual development of each player. The focus should be "are we better now than when we started?" This is why I prefer concert season. Concert season gives us festival, which is a band being measured against a set of set criteria, and not against others bands. (Yes, I know that marching competition also has criteria. But it adds the element of finishing ahead of someone else.) In addition, I get to see my family more during concert season.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good marching band. But I presonally prefer concert season.

I've been out of school for quite some time now. I really loved both marching and concert band. I had two totally different experiences. I was a twirler, then drum major during marching season. I loved the atmosphere of being at football games in the cold, playing fight songs during breaks and after TDs, having a break the entire 3rd quater. I always went to get some nachos -- those consession stand nachos were the best! And, man, it got cold out there wearing those twirling costumes. But I have to say that I really loved concert band. I got to play my flute and work with challenging music. I played all the time, practiced all the time. I enjoyed it so much that I took concert band for a semester or two in college. I would still play for kicks and teach my children if I still had my flute. :thumb:

And it was awesome that we had the respect of our football team.

Definetly marching band! Don't get me wrong I like concert band too, but you get to play more interesting in marching band. It's more exciting to play in front of a stadium full of people. :)

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
