Good Team Play versus Jealous Players

I have observed some good team play, where players are always looking for the open man. I have also observed a more subtle "playing" where players seem to

"not see" or "fail to make a pass to a particular player". Basketball is a team sport and JEALOUSY has no place in the game. A coach that allows it is asking for a short season regardless of his talent. A wise coach rewards good passing as much as scoring. And selfish players deserve a spot on the bench permanently.

If a guy "doesn't see an open man" or can't make a decent pass to an open man , then take him out and let him sit on the bench and maybe then he will figure it out. There is nothing worse then watching a player try to drive against four defenders when one of his teammates is open under the basket or ready to hit an open shot. That kind of player will never make it to the next level and his coach will never make it to the post season.

 

In basketball a great pass is always more impressive then a great shot. When was the last time you saw a coach take someone out for not making a good pass or failing to make a pass. Not often. But they will take a player out for making a foul or missing a shot. Lack of team work is unfortunately really a COACHING PROBLEM. Allowing selfish play is a lack of discipline!

 

I too have observed teams with much less talent put it to teams with more individual talent. That is because basketball is a 5 man sport. This is not just a problem at the high school level. Good coaching makes a major difference in basketball and influences the outcome of the game more than other team sports.

 

Coaches that allow this to go on in the regular season even when winning will see their teams come unraveled in the end.

Politics is what is killing high school sports. The coaches are to worried about mommy and daddy. It is a shame that the team has to be brought down by 1 or 2 players, especially when they are not even close to being the best players on the team.

Politics isn't just whats killing sports, its killing every aspect of life, but get used to it, it's here to stay.

Great posts and so true too. Politics and favortism is the quickest way to assuring a lack of team spirit and the inevitable consequence....LOSING in the end.
