I've been following MBA football since '70. By season's end, the '75 team had a similar injury situation, but I can't recall anything as bad as this at this point in the season.

It's a question and not an accusation: is there any chance that the injury situation is related to the installation of the new turf?

I have to admit, I have the same question. They have played every game this year on artificial turf. Probably just bad luck, but who knows. However, I've run on MBA's new field and did not like it at all. I'll take natural grass over the fake stuff all day long. I know it helps MBA to have a maintainence-free, multipurpose field, though.

Does anyone have an update on MBA QB, Austin Bennett? I've heard that he has a slipped disk in his back and that they are trying to decide on whether or not to operate now or see if he can play. Is this accurate? Also, can anyone give us a rundown on the players out for MBA?

A couple of points from this thread worth addressing:

"MBA barely beat 2A CPA, so they're really struggling this year." In 2004, CPA gave the best team in the state - Riverdale - its toughest game in the regular season, and the 28 points it scored versus RHS was equal to the 28 points scored in total by Riverdale's 9 regular season 5A opponents. A close win over a 2A school doesn't necessarily imply a struggle.

"The team [MBA] hasn't met expectations the past three years." Assuming we're talking about 2004-2006 (and not including the 2003 MBA state title season), the 2004 squad lost three games - one at Trinity (KY) (in which sophomore David Howe was thrust into the QB position two weeks before the game after Ryan Burns went down, and was also without Snyder, Tipton, and other key starters), and two games at eventual state champ MUS by 6 and 3 points. The 2005 squad lost three games - one to Byrnes (SC), easily a Top 10 team in the USA in 2005, one to eventual state champ MUS, and a somewhat disappointing loss to Baylor in the playoffs after beating Baylor the week before. The 2006 MBA squad has lost at MUS, breaking in what was effectively a third string QB (Howe's out, and presumably Rich Tompkins was a backup before the preseason injury), and at CBHS with a fourth string QB (sophomore). The MBA squads from 2004-2006 have a fraction of the talent of previous MBA teams, and have been decimated by injuries like no one else in the league, if not the entire state. Any expectations to be in/win the state title game, as MBA did 6 times (won 5 times) between 1997-2003, were/are perhaps unrealistic given MBA's talent levels and injury statuses during the past couple of seasons and this season.

Man, the way this season is going for MBA, if they didn't have bad luck they wouldn't have any luck at all. Rutledge is a great coach, so he will find the right people for the never ending open positions. Good luck and stay healthy the rest of the way.

MBA had lots of talent, and they still do, but now they have to share with Ensworth. Same thing happened to us. Its ok

As usual for your posts, accurate, insightful, and dead on.

I agree your comments are on point as usual. I do think that the phrase " The team has not met expectations in 3 years" is interesting however. Is it conceivable that the "expectations" had become unrealsistic? Although MBA always has had excellent players, the combination of the Fishers, Santis, Kobans, Frenchs, etc (and I know I am leaving a bunch out) can not continue indefinately for any school, can they? That was a pot full of great high school football players that don't come along in numbers that often.

I guess my point is that MBA had so much success 1997-2003 that the exepectations of titles every year became unrealistic, particularly in a league this strong.

I agree with you completely. I'm quite satisfied with the level of play we've achieved, and have no complaints about the past 3 years. As you say, in this league, I think the coaching is all very good. The necessary commitment to winning is there also across the board. So the difference among the top couple of teams usually is the presence of a couple of uniquely talented players, like the ones you mentioned. Seems like McCallie has that right now. This year, in addition to the injuries, we began the year by playing twice in KY, once at home vs. CPA, and twice in Memphis. Not exactly a comfortable way to begin the year.

If there is an "anxiety factor" around MBA, I think clearly it has to do with Ensworth. If Ensworth had any other coach in the state, people in the MBA community wouldn't be giving them a second thought.

I agree. Maybe I should have used the "quote" function, but I hope you understand that the quote "the team has not met expectations in 3 years" was not my line but someone else's in the thread.

I see this year in the league quite similar to 2001: McCallie is the early leader (and has a legit shot at another undefeated season), but may get challenged by BA in a title game rematch.

    • Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!
