New rule by the TSSAA

I just thought of this. It will affect girls, but unfortunately not boys. I'll try to write this in a way that it makes sense. For club soccer teams registration with TSSA runs from July 1 till July 1 of the following year. So boys (playing club soccer in the fall would be impacted by the proposed rule),

but girls don't have to sign a commitment/permission to roster form (and be registered with a team) until it is time to actually register them.

They don't have to be registered until it is time to participate in games/tournaments with the club team.

They can not participate in club games/tournaments until the High school season is over

So they register for club following the State High School tournament

Technically they are not on any club team during the High School season if they aren't registered with the club team during that time. Lots of kids change club teams from season to season.

I'm a little confused, but many think I stay that way most of the time. I don't really see why it affects anyone. The girls have finished high school before club. So, they are not on a club team during High School play. The boys play club before High School, so they just offer a "letter of resignation" to the club team upon the end of club play. They are not "technically" on a club team. As you stated, " Lots of kids change club teams from season to season". If playing on a team is the criteria, them guest players could be impacted. If membership is the criteria, then just resign. Probably can't be that simple.

Yeah, it's unfortunately not that simple. If the players are registered on a team during the school year (summer is exluded in the rule), it counts. I don't know how guest playing comes into it, or floating rosters, but I guess this is why the TSSAA is still "thinking" about it. Keep your fingers crossed.

It isn't that simple. I am not familiar with the girls situation, but the USYSA Boys National soccer tournament (for clubs), including the Tennessee State Cup, begins in early June usually about 2 or 3 weeks after the end of the boys spring high school season. To qualify for National Cup competition, including the Tennessee State Cup, a club "team" must meet certain qualifications, including it must have played together as a team in a minimum number of league games during the club year which runs from August to August, as I recall. In addition, the club teams have application deadlines and roster freezes to deal with in the spring each year while the high school season is ongoing and even though the boys are not playing club ball.

If the boys try to defeat the proposed rule by resigning in mass from their club teams before the start of the high school season, they will be resigning in the middle of the normal club year. If the club teams dissolve to accomodate high school play, they will most likely loose their ability to qualify to compete in the National Cup tournament including the club state tournament.

If forced to choose between high school and club ball by TSSAA, I think 9 out of 10 of the best soccer players in Tennessee will choose to play club year round. They will abandon Tennessee high school soccer and that will be a shame. But that choice is a no-brainer for the good players who will be recruited to the college ranks as a direct result of their club play in most instances. College coaches do not rely on high school teams for their recruiting. Also remember, the boys are already having to deal with the ridiculous requirement that they play high school soccer in the spring and club soocer in the fall---just the opposite of most states. And, they are not allowed by TSSAA rule to play or even practice club and high school ball together, contrary to many other states. Thus the Tennessee boys are already missing the best club recruiting tournaments in the country which occur in the spring and the boys in Tennessee are at a marked disadvantage in the Regional and National competitions in June and July because they are playing teams from other states that are peaking at the end of their club seasons rather than throwing together an effort on two weeks notice after not playing as a team since December.

The rule is, for lack of a more precise word, stupid and it is not in the best interests of Tennessee's high school soccer players. It is the result of some myopic sense of "leveling the playing field" and is only in the interest of a few, very audible, coaches---mostly in other sports--- who perceive themselves as "have nots". The proponents are promoting the rule for their own self interest and not in the best interest of the kids.

    • Tyler Williams was the logical choice to be named head football. He served as the Highlanders’ strength coach and offensive coordinator.
    • I went to practice yesterday and liked what I saw for the most part. Derek and crew have done a good job during the off-season. I was very impressed with the size of some of those boys on the offensive line. My only regret was one of the boys I was really pulling for to have a good year was dismissed from the team. I have to applaud the coaches for setting examples for the others, no one is bigger than the team. One other thing, I was hoping with that big rain we got this week some of that  yellow paint would dissolve but it didn't.
    • Couple of thoughts: 1.  I just don't understand all the intricacies in TSSAA transfer rules anymore.    William Blount had a kid that played the final part of the basketball season with them this year,  that played at Hardin Valley last year, and played football for Bearden this year.  I say that to say, I know the coaches and the AD and the Principal at WB and I will never believe they would do something they knew was wrong.  They are men of character.  I BELIEVE the same thing about the coaches and administration at Maryville.  Call me gullible, but these are men and women of integrity in my experiences with them. 2.  Much like the transfer of the Clemmer kid a couple of years ago, with Smith, the football team is getting a huge boost, but the impact on the basketball team will be just as great or maybe even greater.  With Smith playing post, it frees the Sigmund kid who will be coming back from injury, to play more with his face to the basket.  The Rebels basketball squad in my mind, will be "the program" in East Tennessee next year.
    • Could not agree more. After this year, McKenzie's new coach will have their work cut out for them. Staying in 1A would definitely be a huge plus. Most years there is not much difference in the top 5- 1A and 2A teams across the state, but after the top 5 or so there is normally a huge drop off for 1A. Regular season region play is a lot easier for 1A in West TN  right now.
    • Word is Jason Maxwell will be new AD - he is currently head baseball coach. Also heard Roc might be headed to Pope as an assistant coach.
