Question about eligibility....

I've been following along the interesting home school debate about home schoolers participating in high school sports, and I understand that legislators here in Tennessee were considering laws that would allow home schoolers to participate. I don't have kids that are homeschooled, but I just got interested after reading about Tim Tebow down at Florida, etc...

My question is this. Let's say I have a child who may have the oppurtunity to attend a magnet high school in a couple of years, say Hume Fogg or MLK in Nashville. Neither of those schools has a football team. Can my kid participate in football at the school which he is zoned for, like Hillsboro?

Anybody ever here of something like this happening? Also, what about a kid who lives in a small town where the public high school they attend does not have a sport they want to play, like say, Girls Soccer, or Girls Track. Can they participate anywhere else?

Are there any small towns or counties that do not have football teams in Tennessee? I know Perry County just got a team a few years ago....

Just curious, I know this has probably come up before and I'm sorry if it's already been discussed in detail, just wanted to get your thoughts...

Schools without a particular sport have "co-op" agreements with another school so that kids at the school without a sport can still participate.

For example: MLK does not have a football team. They have a co-op agreement with Hillsboro and all MLK kids are eligible to play football at Hillsboro. I think Hume Fogg High School has an agreement with Hillwood.

Thanks for the info! I figured there might be something like that in place

That was a good one.

As for the question. When I was coaching years ago, we had a school close by to the school that I was coaching at that did not have football. The kids from that school wanted to join the team I was coaching with. The administration realized that it would put us into a larger classification, and we were in one of the strongest already. We would pick up 400 kids, but only gain about 3 athletes. It was not worth it to us to take these kids. The non participating school was a private school. At first I felt bad for those kids, but a wise man told me that those same kids have the option to go to our school instead of the private school that they decided to attend.

Did the students have the choice of which school they attended or did their parents have a choice? I feel that you never punish a kid for what their parents say or do! That is like punishing a kid because one of their parents complain about what position they play or how much playing time they receive. Kids are not of legal age and have no control over how crazy or stupid their parents act. Let's not loose sight of the fact that high school athletics are for the kids. Often times decisions are made due to the adults ego.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
