Anyone have info on what kind of system the new coach at Centennial will be installing? Offense, defense, whatever...

Coach Mat has his new team looking pretty sharp. He's running the spread offense, and brought in a pretty good OC in Tyler Burns to head that offense. The last I heard Chaz was moved to the reciever spot with Austin Bass taking the snaps. However, Chase Barlar has yet to join the team due to baseball, so it seems pretty likely that the QB spot will be his when he returns. Kelly was the main(only) recieving threat last year, but in the new system, it seems he would fit in a little better at the TE spot, which he played his freshman year. Scales and McLemore will head the recieving corps this year, and Tim Harris could also play in that spot at times this year.

Defensively, we still have some work to do. We lost the defensive Triple-H tandum of Hardison, Harris, and Hogan, who were the heart of that defense last year. We have two excellent young linebackers in Dickey and Sager(can also play on the line), who will likely be key contributors to that defense this year. In the secondary, Allante McLemore continues to be the cream of the crop. His 7 interceptions were tops on the team and he is looking even better this year. However, we need to work on our coverage. It was the big plays that killed us last year, so we need to patient and not try to jump plays too early.

Thanks for the info... I'm excited to see what they can do with a spread. Its been tried there before under Jean Rollins but was abandoned after a very unproductive year and a coaching change. I dont believe so much that you need a rocket armed D1 quarterback to run it well, but you do need a smart kid who can handle the system and read defenses. I suppose you could say that is true for any scheme, but this one is a little more complex than the Pro I. Also, getting the ball to your playmakers is obviously a key so my thinking is to aid that it'd be cool to see some rushing yardarge out of the WR's in an Urban Meyeresque design. Chaz's brother Marcelle was a threat to score every time he touched it...problem being everyone keyed on screens on him and jumped his routes and we had trouble getting him the ball until he moved back to tailback in ceartain situations. His 80 yard screen pass TD's lasted about two summer scrimmages until they were figured out. Also, an oline lacking in size (so I've heard of CHS) can be greatly helped out by pass sets instead of trying to root out kids that have 75 pounds on them. They have to be well coached technique machines, but a 185 pound gaurd with good feet, strong hips and a good understanding of hand placement can usually hold his own with most high school defensive tackles.

Most of all, the kids just have to believe in the scheme and submit to the coaches with everything they've got. Doesn't matter what you run, kids that lay it on the line and finish every snap tend to win more then they lose. They'll need strong leadership to dig them out of a rut of losing and the attitudes that go along with it. Unfortunately, the few quotes I read in the paper from players after the new hire did not lead me to believe the leadership was where it needed to be, but that can be altered. Best to the Cougars.

couple of things to fix here

The OC is Coach Burks not Burns

Chaz is still playing QB and both him and Bass are gettin snaps

Kelly isnt playing football and just focusing on basketball

and an add on to the list of linebackers should be Jordan Thompson who can hit harder than anyone i know

CHS plays Rossview today at 530 @ Centennial

    • Ouch! If he's in the scrap business maybe
    • That's a nice story but has little to nothing to do with what we're talking about.
    • The winds of change are blowing in Hartsville.     Will be an interesting follow.    Would go back to the 90s and turn black the clock!
    • Did he promise you a coordinator job or something if he ever got a head coaching job? He resigned? He was at the top of the dugout last night calling plays. I wonder if those 30+ parents would let him give their kids a ride. by the way the board meeting was last night and it was not mentioned. must have been at the work session earlier this week which is not public. must be trying to keep it quiet.  Since you know so much, how much is Robbie Atwood willing to pay Adam Cothron?  Didn't you slander Eden earlier on here? You also didn't know he was a faculty coach again so how much do you really know? Some people outside this county baffle me with their need to slander others.
    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
