Indian nicknames could be history in TN

topvol,

I don't understand how using the word Indians is degrading. For Dobyns-Bennett the "mascot" was chosen, I believe, in 1932 and has been given nothing but respect and adulation. How better to teach about a culture, group, or organization than have it be an important symbol in a community. I don't know of a school nicknamed the "savages" or "scalpers", do you? Those would be derogatory (in my opinion).

There are some lines that shouldn't be crossed in choices made as mascots, but I certainly don't think one paying reverence to Indians (or native north americans for all the politically correct crowd) is anywhere near the line.

Nobody wants to have their mascot be a slur, they want it to honor and be honorable.

The bottom line comes back to the fact that there is no U.S. right to never be offended. I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but just being a D-B fan offends some; so let's maybe pick our battles more wisely and those that are fighting for this halt maybe see if there might be something that could be done to more directly and positively effect the life of indians (native north americans).

I understand what your saying but there are no teams named caucasians, blacks, asians, jews or any other ethnic group except Irish. When you have people that are outside of any race dressing up and using artifacts of another race, it shoudn't be argued to how those people should feel. I'm jsut saying that you can't justify why it should be allowed when that group says that it's offensive. We all know that the world is an much different place then it was in 1932 and minorites now have voices to let there displeasures be known that were not heard then. I agree that Indians is an general term but it's still not an mascot, it's an group of people. I'm not saying that those names are derogatory but it's not our decision to determine that for them.

You make a good argument..... are you a lawyer? Just checking. You do make valid points though.

I believe the US human rights commission has already sided with the Native Americans on this one. While they have no legal jurisdiction to eliminate it, it does give opponents of these mascots fuel for a legal challenge should they decide to file a suit.

I found this interesting reading.

Maryville College FIGHTING SCOTS named after their first coach Lombe Honaker who was Scottish, as are the majority of East Tennesseans.

My ex-wife called me Satan ... and thus being Satan, I am officially offended by all mascots that have my likeness in them.

I will be going on a campaign to get all the attention I possibly can, please watch for my pitchfork all across the state.

So we can have the Devil (Blue Devils, Green Devils), the lord of the underworld that thrives off of death and destruction, as our mascot but Indian is unacceptable?

What is worse than the Devil? I think this whole issue is a little over-dramatic.

Hmmm....native Americans, Irish, Vikings, Spartans, Highlanders, Trojans......and assorted animals viewed as mean, tough, deadly........and some folks see a problem here....

I suppose the folks that are getting all worked up about it are well meaning, kinda like the folks that get all worked up about certain books in the library they consider offensive, so by golly no one ought to get to read them....

But it's really kinda sad......

Sequoyah Highschool located in MonroeCo just 15 mile from the birthplace of the great chief. The school is name in his honor, what should they be? "The Alphabets"

When the school was named, they went straight to the source. The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians gave their approval for the use of the name Sequoyah and Chiefs. This was to recognize his achievement as the author of the Cherokee alphabet. We name monuments after men of honor, why not schools?I don't get the PC bullcrap in our world today!I don't see how a few ruin things for many.

Since there are no more indian warriors around, would you rather these schools think" hey, they must have not been that much of a warriror or very brave at all. I mean if they had been, they would still be very visible today so let's not honor them anymore and they can just fade away." I think we will call ourselves the fighting lawyers. There are millions of them ready to do battle at any given moment.

This kind of nonsense will only bring about more racial tension! We don't need to go back to the 60's or beyond but this is not an example of progress. For instance...are there any predominately Black schools with the mascot of Panthers. Rather coy isn't it? Is that offensive to anyone? I'm sure as we speak there is a government agency being formed to make a master list of politically correct mascots of which all schools will be subjected to pick from. Just so we can please everyone. Will that be money well spent? Normally when a new legislation is employed everyone before the legislation is "Grandfathered in" and all new considerations of said legislation are then subjected to the new "ruling". Oh, but that is not good enough...correct? The indians were conquered. Many peoples were conquered throughout history. The spoils go to the victor. Are we beyond that? Maybe. Does that mean we have to go back and pay restitution to all conquered peoples? Get a grip! Education goes a long way! The Civil War for example. The Ku Klux Klan for example. The Black Panthers for example. The bombing of Hiroshima. The Scalawags...the list goes on and on. The common misconceptions about these events and organizations and many more not mentioned is based on uneducated ignorance! Speak to a re-enactor of the Revolutionary War or the Civil War for example and in 5 minutes you will quickly understand that what you conceive to be the gospel about some of your understandings is actually wrong. God forbid anyone to read about these things...because I know very few listened to the lectures or studied the material in history class! The Rebel flag for example. It had nothing to do with racism. It was a battle flag! So now you say, "but the Civil War was about racism...that's ignorant uneducated BS! It is a stigma. A stigma gets attached to many things...like body piercings and tatoos and Voodoo dolls, and the Rebel flag. Quit whining and get on with it. Life ain't easy regardless of race color or origin. Yes, there are mockeries and bastardizations of many things sacred in this nation. Bottom line? You can't legislate morality. We can't re-write history. We are who we are. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes and support our fellow man...Black, White, Red, Brown or any combination thereof. If men in this country would teach the young men how to be a MAN much of this intoxication would be diminished. Sad to say...but these are the things war cures. These are the things famin cures. When life is at stake BS takes a back seat. We need to learn to live lean...lean and mean. And embrace the more important issues in life. The things that affect us all. Rebel Nation...I hope no one is offended!

    • Track has always been big at OR. Ran off about 7 straight titles in the 60s. Your hate for Gaddis runs deep, huh? What did he ever do to you, to make you disdain him that much? You can’t seem to stop talking about the guy. He’s living rent free in your head. Might wanna get that checked out. Not good to go to the grave with that in your heart.
    • This late in the year, you’d have to think they’d go with an Asst. on staff, right? I’m pretty new to the area so still learning how folks do things around here…if Woods stays there to teach, it could be hard on a new guy/staff coming in…
    • Well, your Big Western Hunt better turn up some Zebras to come graze on the Stones to make the jungle gametime ready again and make sure the plumber bros. still will come service the facilities at the Mecca. I hope your weekend is Fowl. Tell Rip hello from the Five Oh. Maybe the Gravedigger will catch a ride with Alphaniner on a flyover soon to BNA.
    • It’s not hearsay, just patently false. As one of those young coaches he apparently “ran off”, coach never once ridiculed or degraded anyone. Sure he challenged kids and coached them very hard,  but we have different definitions of you call that degrading. Coach Hammontree changed my life when he gave me the chance to work for him. I learned more about being a man and caring for the people around me in 4 years working for him than I did in 20 years of my life. No one sacrificed more than he did. I left Heritage because I felt there would never be the support necessary to help the program succeed. I’m tired of hearing people drag others down especially those they truly don’t know. Coach has moved on and a new coach is there. Just let the man live and root for the team.
    • Waiting on the Great One.   White Horse and Rip have a big weekend in the woods, and the Sheriff is working the overtime here.      Turkey season awaits…..Big Gobblers everywhere.
