Please quit comparing apples to oranges! I played for both and they were great coaches! Coach Hill changed the mentality of OC football and Coach Bowling kept it going. Both coaches played equally important roles in getting OC football where it is today. Coach Hill was more about discipline while Coach Bowling worked hard to start tradition and make something that former players and current fans could be proud of. I'm praising them both. I know the importance of the contributions each made. I'm in no way comparing apples to oranges. I realize that Coach Hill did great things, but to say that OC went backwards under Coach Bowling is complete nonsense. I have a pretty good basis for my opinions. As a former player (before the time of either of the aforementioned coaches), I can see the benefits reaped from each of these men.
StevieRayVol
And speaking of Grady Andrews I don't know if it is true or not but he was at the ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL...... And a pretty good source said he was going to DMS.... Not to coach, just to teach..... Don't know, the guy is a good DC...... Stay tuned..... OC football is so far above where it was six or seven years ago. Both men have been instrumental in starting a great program at OC. I would agree with your assertion that OC never went backwards under Bowling. I say this because excluding his second year, he did great with what he had. I was one of five seniors two years ago and I know that had it not been for the last half of the Haywood game and if Grady hadn't gotten hurt we would have been playing for the region title. We beat the #1 team in the state twice under Bowling, which is a great accomplishment. And my senior year we almost knocked off the #1 team twice if we could have held Dyersburg. With that being said, I agree that no regress occurred during Coach Bowlings tenure at Obion County Central.
FBPLACE
Are the expectations so low in Obion County that not making the playoffs 3 of 4 yrs is considered successful. Not to mention the last 3 of a 4 yr tenure. Practically everyone makes the playoffs these days. Back in the day only the top team of a district made the playoffs, now very few teams are excluded. And the injury excuses, every team can say that, every team has injuries, that's part of the business, You just overcome them. you have great facilities, you ought to be able to beat people from time to time. I also feel they have better talent than people give them credit for. Expect more
PowerSet
I realize that this isn't pee-wee, and wins and losses count, but if the only way you can measure success is by wins and losses, you can't see the forest for the trees. Success can be measured by progress. OC is making progress. It wasn't that long ago that OC was getting completely destroyed by the teams that they are competing with now. The Covingtons, Haywoods, Ripleys, Crocketts, and Dyersburgs of the world used to have their way against the Rebels, but those days are slowly fading away. The players, coaches, and community are getting the mentality of doing what it takes to win. You have to crawl before you can walk, and OC is getting to the point that they can compete in every game. OC has averaged winning about 6 games per season in the 90's. Thats not great, but for a team with the history of Obion County, it's progress. Yes, OC does have wonderful facilities, but to the best of my knowledge, those don't win games; players do. And maybe OC does deserve more credit for their talent, but it's obvious that the athletic ability in Troy pales in comparison to the schools mentioned above. The Rebels might have a stud every few years, but not at every position on the field. I could just about guarantee that each of the teams mentioned above would have an athletic advantage at 8 of the 11 positions on the field on every play of the game. However, what OC lacks in ability, they make up with determination. That's why they win games that they probably shouldn't. Certainly, as coaches and players, they go into each game expecting to win. But on paper, they shouldn't have beaten Covington, last year or in 2004. They shouldn't have been within a total of 6 points of Haywood the past 2 seasons. The same Haywood that beat the 8AAA champ each season. But they didnt care about who's better on paper. They played as a team and were successful. We finished the season above .500 and didn't make the playoffs. That says a little about the strength of the region. As a former player (who was definitely not the most athletic on the field), I can say that from experience. Believe me, we do expect more. But we also know that all good things take time. Expect more The last two seasons in Region 7-3A have had 6-4 teams THAT DID NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS....Tell me another region in the state with that stat....A 5th place 6-4 team???...I don't think many regions in any classification can say that... You are obviously in the dark as to where the OC Rebel football program has been....I played at Union City way back in the day and I have seen OC wallow in mediocrity, well even below that, for many years....You could just pencil a "W" in when you played them.....I played three times against Obion Central teams and they never scored...Not even against our back-ups......OC has come a very long way...Yes,it is time to move past where they are now and be a team mentioned in the top 4 of their region,I agree with that...You should expect that, every season....Expectations have been very low,to say the least,at OC....I'll go a little further back than LU_the_Eagle went and say Larry Shanks started the upswing at OC...He was the one that got the facilities upgraded with the Multi-Purpose building and the home stands built and also the Obion County Youth League for football started.....The Rebels have come a VERY LONG WAY the last few years....It's tough when you have to start below sea-level to get a program at a championship level...It took time for them to get very bad,it will take some time to get very good..... By the way....A little news about Dyersburg.....Darren Bowling has hired a new assistant.....Former head coach at Fayette Academy,Wes Kennedy.....Kennedy was 63-40 at FA and will handle the O-Line duties for the Trojans....... wardawg2038
Wow, That is a huge addition to the Dyersburg staff. I know Coach Kennedy very well and he is a great coach. What is going to happen at Fayette? Good luck to the Trojans this fall from someone who has much respect for both Coach Bowling and Kennedy!! Well...not taking anything away from Central...but ya'll are talking bout how decent OC has been the past few years...don't forget you guys lost to Gibson Co., a place known for struggling, 2 years in a row....the first year snapping a 38 game losing streak and then the next year giving up around 375 yards of rushing and 7 td's to a pretty decent back in Antoine Cunningham...however you guys did drill us this past year!!! anyways this topic is about Coach Bowling and Dyersburg and IMO Bowling will take Dyersburg VERY far this year...further than years past IMO...Good Luck to OC and Dburg this coming season!!!
