I agree that the "70-200 2.8" is best.

The big lens gets you further out in the field, but you

have a limited field to shoot. If you use the big lens,

you have to stay in a certain area -- no action close

to you can be shot.

If you use the big lens, you need another camera and

lens for closer action.

The problem at most high school night games is the lighthing.

Some people use a flash, but I am not keen on that option.

Yet at some fields, there is no choice but to use a flash.

This is what you need.....set you back about 6-7000. If the price of Plus Membership suddenly goes up, we will know what happen!!!!

Well, I got another lens- Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Autofocus Lens

Will use it for the first time tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think.

I absolutely LOVE the Canon 2.8 especially since it has the image stabilization, although I would like the 300, it's a bit beyond my reach. I would speculate that this lens is similar in kind as it is an L series, I think. Is this constant 4.0 aperture throughout the lens?

You might be able to shoot night work, but you may have to bump the ISO up a good deal. Football fields are often pretty well lighted but since all the lights are so high they can create oddball shadows at times. I have had trouble with this with night time softball but still pulled out some images. I also have the 100-300 f4-f5.6 and wish I had saved the cash and went for a L series high end prime. Nice for daytime sprts but not so good at night.

Saw the night time baseball sample and looks as though it will be usable ...

I use a 85mm fixed 1.8 for basketball. No flash. You can get whatever you want in a well lit gym with that.

DL.

Someone suggested to me to use a 24-70 2.8 L for basketball. I did a little research and that is regarded as a do everything lens. How would this compare to what you have suggested? Is the latter overkill? TIA

The 2.8 would do ok but in a gym where no flash is allowed, but I'd go with with at least a 1.8. The 85mm/1.8 being talked about here is in the $300+ range. I got a 50mm/1.8 for under$100. Used it for the last two games I've shot and loved it. Not as much zoom as the 85mm but works for me. Not sure how long it will hold up for the price. But it is a start.

Very much so. Light, easy to use. etc. I'm not sure it will be usable for nighttime football games, though.

Hey CoachT,

I use a 135mm/2.8 lens on the football field. It is great for shot on your sidelines, but you need to move around to get a shot. WHich I'm ok with it. Also if you need longer lens, but don't have 2.8...maybe a 3.5f or f4 you can do this. Run your ISO higher and set camera to M (manual) and adjust you shutter speed. You can take a test shot or two to find out how it looks.

The 135/2.8 does a great job though. Just thought I'd mention this to ya.

Happy Shooting!

Greg

Hi to all, my first question on this forum. J have a 50D with a 15-85 on the front. I feel I need more ability to take photos in darker light, subequently I have come up with two lenses. (1) Canon 28mm 1.4 USM or a Tokina

11-16 which I realise is a very popular, good quality lens at 2.8 . However the low magnification of the Tokina

concerns me.

I would appreciate some comment from anyone who may have the Tokina particularly, so I can decide which one to purchase, and what use it is put to. Is it suitable for landscape photography

Many thanks

    • You defend your little buddy bsatt like it’s the end of the world just as much. Why don’t you go on to Upperman with him this summer… you know he is your “BEST MAN”.
    • No sir. Not staying at East. But definitely not going to Elizabethton.
    • Football and basketball coaches should not be making 100,000 not teaching any classes unless their winning state championship every year lol
    • Im sure Nick Saban didnt have the final say at Alabama! That was not one of your brightest statements. How can you be that uneducated about football and blog about football? Its fair to name people who get arrested, its part of the consequences of their dumb mistakes as adults. You talk mess about the satterfields for way less. Are you that guys lawyer? I have never seen somebody defend someone so hard for something that could have been catastrophic.
