Well, he's made it as a pitcher, now as an outfielder. Here's hoping he can do it!

Poor guy. I really rooted for him to make it as a pitcher. Nice guy just lost the strike zone. Kind of like Macky Sasser and Dale Murphy as catchers. Dale could not throw to second base and Macky could not throw back to the pitcher. Steve Sax could not throw to first base from second base. Amazing how the human brain can function. I'm not 100% sure about Sasser but it was a blond headed cather for the Mets who could not throw to the pitcher. Maybe somebody can help me with that one. Anyway good luck to Rick. A good guy who I hope makes it. I will be waiting to see what happens. This could turn into a good story.

I had forgotten about Murphy behind the plate. I saw him a 1/2 dozen times catching with the Kinsport Braves in the Appalachian League for the Kingsport Braves, circa 1974. You could tell he was going to move up then.

Yea I was a big Murph fan growing up. I hung on every radio and tv broadcast on many losing braves games hoping that big Dale would go yard. He found a way to be in the majors. Mainly with his bat but won five gold gloves and was a seven time all-star. Murph like many players of the eighties will be penalized for not having the big enormous home run numbers like todays players. He lead the league in home runs one year with 37. Bonds had 38 at the break in 2001. So now the 80's players like Dale, Andre Dawson, Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Gary Gaetti, Will Clark, Matt Williams and others will not be considered for the HOF. Maybe they do not deserve to go but it seemed like the game was more fun to watch and the Home Run was not as watered down as it is now. So maybe rick Ankiel can find some kind of place in "the Show". Dale Murphy did after he blew it as catcher.

Ankiel hit a home run in his debut Thursday...

What a great story! I love those kind of triumphs. When the odds are against you and people have lost faith in you and have gotten off your bandwagon and then you prove them wrong. Rick Ankiel was the voice of all the underdogs of the world even if it was for just one night. Tip of the cap to the Cardinal organization for not getting rid of the guy. Here is wishing him continued success.

      He may have possibly said that to get the best out of him. Back when I was in school word got out I was going to transfer and Coach Story popped off and ask Coach Wilson in front of the team if Maryville was going to get a jock strap in return on this trade. That got back to me and I got fired up and stayed just to show them up. Now today Coach Story is one of my best friends.

      Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!

      This is a great question. The retirement seemed a little premature. I do not know the coach personally, but I hope he has found what he is looking for. He is a fine Christian man with a lot of principle and morals about him. I wish him nothing but the best. There are some players in the box for the next coach. This is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.
