Alright now i was in the band it wasn't as intense as people are trying to say it is!!! I've played Baseball, football (NO PADS the good kind), basketball (street ball where fouls don't count), & bowling and among all of these SPORTS i have to say Bowling is the hardest i have played and it does take physical strength... try throwing a 16 lb ball 60 feet at speeds of 20 mph up to about 12 to 21 times a game times 3 games so anywhere from 36-63 times a day do that 3 times a week and tell me how much physical strength you actually need!!! oh and band isn't a sport!!

I think band is definitely a sport! It's alot harder than it looks.

I was an athlete in high school and college. I didn't think the band was a sport then.

But I do now. I have watched two of my kids work extremely hard in band, earning them

the 2007 Div. 1 State Championship. Maybe some band directors aren't hard, but theirs is.

It takes commitment, concentration and alot of talent.

Watch what? jogged a short distance and.................. Be for real how would anyone think that this is a sport. Are they conditioning every day? Basketball, football, baseball, soccer now those are sports. You take one band member against one football, basketball, soccer, baseball player and let them go through what they do for one day and lets see who is the first person down!!!! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Your absolutly right. We do have differences of opinion, but don't get on here and say that band would lower the standard if it were called a sport. It takes more mentality to play band anyday than it does a lot of sports out there!!! They're not on a level anyway. One is just as good as the other.

Alrite, I just want to talk about the mentality thing he said. I play piano, i have friends that play guitar, bass, drums, clarinet, flute, etc. Instruments become almost a second nature once you get good at them for the first thing.

And try playing tennis. You have from the time that serve is hit at you (goin 120 mph if you play southern USTA tournaments or against some of the D2 teams) and you have a split second to decide what kind of shot to hit, where to hit, and you have to get in position. It is like that for every single shot. In football you have 11 200 pound guys coming that want to physically hurt you and you have to make a decision with that pressure. In soccer you have the other team that would like more than anything to get around a foul and bring you down to win that game. In basketball they run so many plays that its ridiculous AND you have 5 6 foot tall people trying to stop those plays. I could go on and on, the only sports that dont require as much mentality i guess you could say is cross country and running because it slows you down to think to much haha.

So tell me that band requires more mentality than all of that.

i think it definitely take more mentality. most shows have around 60 sets we have to memorize. we also have to think about wether your toes are up on a forward move, are you on the balls of your feet with perfectly straight legs on a backwards move, is yor horn bouncing on the more, are you with the drummajor, are you inline with your horisontal and vertical guide points, how is your horn carriage, are you on the correct foot? then you have to remember things like horn pops, halts, tempo changes, direction changes, not to mention the 7+ mins of music you ahve to remeber. plus intunation, dynamics, balance, tone, and other musical elements.

sports, more mentality? i think NOT!

yes SOME of those things do become second nature but you are always striving to be better than you were at the last performance. therefore you are constantly thinking about them, critizing yourself on them and trying to improve them, while you are on the field. especially the things that can be seen.

marching band is more mental than sports.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL its not at all

thats like saying drumming is more mental at sports because you have 4 different things going on at once

u can march and play an instrument

our body works ina way that the more we do something we basically can do it in our sleep

you guys do marching patterns and play songs ALL YEAR, thats why they get progressively better but its the same situation every time

sports are against a different team/player everytime. you must be much more adaptive on a mental AND physical level

I'm guessing you are in the band! Correct? Well, if you are... with your last statement this concludes this topic!!

"marching band is more mental than sports" so by you saying that you are saying that band is NOT a sport!!

and i have to disagree with that statement too! have you ever bowled on a league/high school team (not just for fun)? If not, then try it and you will be amazed of how that statement is totally wrong!

    • HVA is a dump and will never be good at football. It's a baseball school. Look at the types of homes being built and families moving in. Not football families. People will move in and look at the school and choose to play for another program. This issue has been snow balling for a decade now
    • Also no shot at an indoor facility it took ya'll almost a decade just to turf blankenship
    • You will not be able to replace Dozier he was a stud and wasted for years. Heyward started strong and then fell of but he will be missed still Rembert could fly and was also underused. Not being replaced. Track has started to close the gap with football. It does not help that the current AD is just stealing money(collecting his check) while the assistant AD is a XC/Track guy who always hated football. Current AD is too worried about not hurting anyone's feelings to do anything at all. Heck he is gotta be 70 plus and looks like a fool wearing kid shoes
    • Will Trez remain 2A after the influx of another 2A school?
    • As I said somewhere earlier in the thread, the original plans had no outdoor athletic facilities being part of the campus.  The original plan was for HVA to use facilities at nearby schools.  Very late in the process they came up with a plan and found budget to have minimal facilities and crammed them in to space that never was intended for athletic facilities.
