I have to say, I would not simplify this discussion too much. Is band a sport. no. Who works the hardest? Better question.

Most bands put in more hours than most football teams. The work is hard, and it is tiring. It is very tough, and not just anyone can do it.

But it is not a sport.

Bands should be regulated like sports, with dead periods and other such restrictions placed on team sports. Band directors seem to have free reign, or tyranny, over the students.

good point, especially when there is more at stake that "participation". there is also a grade to worry about. Seems trivial sometimes, but try explaining to the admissions office of some big state university about how you got a C in Band!!! /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> ...."ummmm....well....I missed some rehearsals during the spring....and....aaaaaaaaah......." Youre outta there.

i still hold that marching band is not a sport. drum corps is. but i found this in an online paper talking about colunteer high school going to the sugar bowl last year....

???If a nonmusician of average physical fitness simply walks down the street at the pulse of your average radio pop tune for about 3.5 minutes without slowing down or taking a break, he or she would begin to understanding the minimum demands of a Marching Band member,??? Sarver said. ???If you increase the speed to slightly under that of speed-walking, strap on a 30-pound sousaphone or a 60-pound drum, don a lined jacket, pants, gloves and hat, play the instrument??”which means controlling your breathing while varying your direction every 16 steps or so??”you will start to understand that Marching Band is a sport.???

$20 says that whoever wrote that has never played a sport and is probably one of those band guys that gives band a bad name.

If the average "musician" "walks" down the field, with his lined jacket, pants, gloves, hat, and instrument and they meet the "average" football player running full speed, with adrenaline pumping, with shoulder pads and a helmet..........................

Band member is not a band member anymore. Glad the Ambulance/EMTs were there. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

I'm sure it probably wouldn't go very good.....but not as bad as the flute player fielding the opening kickoff of a football game, the majorette getting blindsided by a blitzing backside linebacker or a flag girl going through the Oklahoma drill.

The topic is whether band is a sport, not whether or not band members or football players work the hardest. I have to admit this is one of the funniest threads that I've read on CoachT.

What's up OWLS? I'm with you, this is the funniest thread I have read so far. Bands have great school spirit, add so much to the games, work hard and most are very talented. When they go to competition it's pretty darn close to being a sporting event, but no I don't think Band is a sport.

Same ol' stuff here Nitro. Just killing time till HS & youth football cranks up. I'm planning a Florida trip sometime during the season. My daughter was selected drum major for her HS band down there. She's made Daddy proud!! ....and she thinks she's a better drummer than me! Hey, I haven't forgot your SC hat.

Like Clint Black's song: "This killing time is killing me" is so true! We have about 10 weeks or so before the Friday Night Lights come on! Congratulations to your daughter. It's a great thing to see hard work & dedication pay off!

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
