This is the way I see the Big 9

1. Science Hill (Everyone back except Omar)

2. D-B (A load of talent back)

3. East (Only lost 1 starter)

4. Central (tie) (Lost a lot but got a good coach)

5. Tenn. High (tie) (Good coach hard to play their style of ball)

6. Boone (Moncier is back not much else.)

7. Volunteer (Lost everyone except Cradic)

8. Crockett (Lost a lot plus their Coach)

9. South (Could be South's worst team ever.)

I think that is EXACTLY how its going to be. THS lost some people but had loads of talent on the bench from last year. What people dont understand about SH is that Omar was the whole team. I would not be surprised if they lost some shocking games this year. I might put Volunteer above Central though just because of that bully type of ball they play. Its the roughest and dirtiest play in the Big 9 and people cant stand playing them. Plus they have Craddick back. Everything else looks to be in check

You must not pay attention to the games because Omar didnt play as big a role last year as he did his junior year. The other players on the team got a lot of experience last year, so Science Hill will be ready to go as usual

DB (Definite #1, they have talent up and down the lineup, COMPLETE all around team for Charlie Morgan)

Science Hill (clear #2, but not as good DB)

Then it gets to be anybody's chance

TN HIGH (proven they get it done in the past)

Volunteer (just b/c of style of play lesser teams will back down)

Boone

East (decent offense, but defense is pathetic)

Central (will win some games at home b/c of fans, but on the road could lose some surprising games)

Crockett (cant wait to see the Crockett vs. South game, I will definitely be there!)

South (we are just AWFUL)

The two best players in the conference are Keith Cradic and Dionte Grey. I would possibly throw in Justin Sylvester. But since the MVP should go to the best team I would give it to Sylvester. Dont be surprised to see Bronson Flack's name thrown in there by season's end.

Look for Volunteer to knock of some teams that they shouldn't and lose some games that they shouldn't, that is why they are just in the middle of the pack for me. But Cradic will put them in a few games just because he is a good player. (notice I didn't say great) He plays great against poor defenders, but as soon as you stick a top notch defender like Chris Smith of Science Hill or Justin Sylvester or that zone of TN High he collapses. TN High plays that slow paced game so they can keep it close with anybody except of DB. DB has the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best shooters in the conference next to Isaac Snapp of East. They have Dustin McConell, Todd Halverson, and Justin Sylvester to light it up from outside and against that zone of TN HIGH which will beat them alone. They cant guard all of them. This is the real difference between Science Hill and DB. Science Hill has the best athletes in the conference but DB can score on ANYBODY. They have got a GREAT post game with Flack and others down low. Then they sport the shooters outside, who can light it up from ANYWHERE. My son played for a team last year and was on Jayvee. In the conference tournament I recall Halverson and McConell each scoring around twenty and having about 5 threes each. Now yes this is jayvee but these kids can shoot. Then we all saw what Justin Sylvester can do. That goes unsaid. Just wait and see.

The Science Hill vs. Dobyns Bennett game will be a good one to watch. I believe that it will come down to the fact that DB is just bigger than Science Hill and they will control the boards. Science Hill is a much better defensive team than DB but there is no way that they can guard all of DB's scorers. If they go hard on the guards then they can't double down on the posts which have an average of 4 inches over each opposing player.

Boone will have a strong returning cast with Nick Young but there offensive fire power will just not be enough to compete with those from the top. East has one of the best scorers in the conference with Isaac Snapp but with his team not being able to get much publicity not being one of the top teams he may not have much of a chance to win player of the year. Though he may be the best offensive player in the conference. But defense.........

I am not going to mention my South Rebels, cause..... lets just say that we are happy with the football team. GO REBELS!!!

MY BOLD PREDICTION

BOTH Science Hill and DB make it to the State Tournament. Justin Sylvester wins MVP, and the BOLDEST of ALL Dobyns Bennett wins the state tournament. Its a stretch, but the other teams in 3aaa are down and this just might be a BIG 9 CONFERENCE teams year to win it all. And that might be Dobyns Bennett.

I like the Analysis. If East has worked hard in the off season on their defense, they could be a good contender, but they never have a true big man down low so I think that will be their setback. As for Science Hill and DB they are at the top as always.

My personal projections:

1. Dobyns Bennett

2. Science Hill

3. Tennessee High

4. Sullivan East

5. Sullivan Central

6. Volunteer

7. Daniel Boone

8. David Crockett

9. Sullivan South

And for the poster who previously mentioned the talented freshman at Sullivan East...I agree, he really is that good. I don't know how well he will be able to compete immediatley, but the boy can really play. He will be a definate offensive weapon in the future and possibly this year.

DB to win state is ridiculous. You saying Bronson Flack as contending for player of the year may be more ridiculous. Jordan Edwards is their post stud. Bronson shys away from contact,Edwards is gonna take the contact and finish. DB has the best all around guard-Sylvester, and post player-Edwards, in the conference. I say all around because Sylvester can shoot, pass, handle the ball, and play D,no other guard can do all those. And they are just juniors. The state prediction for them even next year would be ridiculous. Teams from this area just cannot match up athletically with teams from Memphis. It would take a virtuoso performance in the Boro for East TN teams to win it.

Despite all those,I say DB wins the conference but in a fashion similar to last year. Start off slow, then get the ball rolling at the end. No big 9 team will go undefeated in conference play. And I think that the conference is pretty good this year,I would not be surprised at all if when regionals comes around it looks like a repeat of the district tournament.

Goooooo Cougars.

    • Personally I was pulling for Lee Hammonds to get another shot. He’s earned it!
    • Tyler Williams was the logical choice to be named head football. He served as the Highlanders’ strength coach and offensive coordinator.
    • I went to practice yesterday and liked what I saw for the most part. Derek and crew have done a good job during the off-season. I was very impressed with the size of some of those boys on the offensive line. My only regret was one of the boys I was really pulling for to have a good year was dismissed from the team. I have to applaud the coaches for setting examples for the others, no one is bigger than the team. One other thing, I was hoping with that big rain we got this week some of that  yellow paint would dissolve but it didn't.
    • Couple of thoughts: 1.  I just don't understand all the intricacies in TSSAA transfer rules anymore.    William Blount had a kid that played the final part of the basketball season with them this year,  that played at Hardin Valley last year, and played football for Bearden this year.  I say that to say, I know the coaches and the AD and the Principal at WB and I will never believe they would do something they knew was wrong.  They are men of character.  I BELIEVE the same thing about the coaches and administration at Maryville.  Call me gullible, but these are men and women of integrity in my experiences with them. 2.  Much like the transfer of the Clemmer kid a couple of years ago, with Smith, the football team is getting a huge boost, but the impact on the basketball team will be just as great or maybe even greater.  With Smith playing post, it frees the Sigmund kid who will be coming back from injury, to play more with his face to the basket.  The Rebels basketball squad in my mind, will be "the program" in East Tennessee next year.
    • Could not agree more. After this year, McKenzie's new coach will have their work cut out for them. Staying in 1A would definitely be a huge plus. Most years there is not much difference in the top 5- 1A and 2A teams across the state, but after the top 5 or so there is normally a huge drop off for 1A. Regular season region play is a lot easier for 1A in West TN  right now.
