Field for 2007 Arby??™s Classic filled with blue-chip prospects

BRISTOL, Tenn. ??” Having top college prospects is a staple for Arby??™s Classic teams coming from outside the Tri-Cities area. Just a glance at the rosters is enough to make a hard-core basketball fan drool.

 

There is much more to the classic than which teams win and which ones lose. It??™s the experience of getting to see future NBA and college stars in a developmental stage. Everyone who has watched an Arby??™s event seems to cherish the memories. Local players competing in the classic will have something special to tell their grandchildren.

 

The 25th annual tournament, scheduled for Dec. 26-31, will include 13 teams from six states plus entries from Washington, D.C., Canada, Germany and the Bahamas. The 17-team field will have plenty of new blood this time.

 

Iolani of Honolulu, the winner of five of the past six Hawaii state championships, is coming to the Tri-Cities, while Northview of Duluth, Ga., a team featuring Ralph Sampson??™s two sons, should attract extreme interest. Ranked among the top 10 teams in Georgia??™s 5A classification last year, Duluth has 6-foot-11, 220-pound senior Ralph Sampson III leading the way. Joining him are Ralph II??™s younger son, Robert, a 6-8 sophomore, and 6-8 Will Grayson.

 

Others appearing from outside the area are Archbishop Carroll of Washingon, D.C.; Memphis Briarcrest; Charlotte of Punta Gorda, Fla.; Columbia, Ga.; Los Angeles Dorsey; Henry Carr of Toronto, Canada; Orlando (Fla.) Pine Castle; Tabernacle Baptist of Freeport, Grand Bahamas; and Urspring, Germany.

 

First-round games will pit Sullivan East against Tabernacle, Greeneville against Urspring, Science Hill against Northview, Tennessee High against Archbishop Carroll, Dobyns-Bennett against Columbia, Gate City against Pine Castle, Iolani against Henry Carr, and Volunteer against Charlotte. The Tabernacle-East winner will take on Briarcrest and the Greeneville-Urpsring winner will play Dorsey on the second-day card.

 

???It??™s an opportunity for us to simulate a state tournament,??™??™ Gate City coach Scott Vermillion said after Sunday??™s drawing. ???I don??™t know anything about Pine Castle, but a Class A Florida team should be about like a Group A Virginia team ??” maybe a little more athletic.??™??™

 

Gate City and D-B, both anticipating a banner season, aren??™t scheduled to meet this year. However, if both win or both lose opening games in the Arby??™s, they would clash in the next round.

 

Ken Cutlip, Science Hill??™s coach, said the event offers many benefits. ???We look for tournaments where we can play against teams with different styles. That way you can find out your weaknesses,??? Cutlip said. ???Any success you have just raises the level you must play the next night.??™??™

 

Volunteer coach Todd Whittemore, whose team is making its maiden appearance, is delighted his players are getting to perform under the big top. ???This is the big show, the big dance,??™??™ he said. ???We??™re really happy to be in it and playing a 7 o??™clock game in our opener.??™??™

 

East coach John Dyer considers it a blessing. ???It??™s a great atmosphere just 8 miles down the road,??™??™ he said. ???I??™ve asked my kids before if they??™d rather make a trip to Florida or be in the Arby??™s. They??™ve always liked playing here. Facing this caliber of competition is a thrill for them.???

I'm new on the boards here. Been reading a while but in my opinion, I think East is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year. This is a team on the move!

Oh you are right I didn't make that post clear. sorry. They will be a force in the big 9 but definitely not at the Arbys.
