That is another of my considerations. Mark has three years to go, maybe longer, to finish his pre-pharmacy and pharmacy school. Katie is graduating high school this spring. Two in college at the same time. Our goal has always been to get them through school with no student loans and we have done that so far, for Brynn and Mark. Not sure if we can from here on or not.

Jim, what kind of kids are your kids? Do they hold grudges? Do they notice differences? I ask because if you helped one all the way through school allowing them not to borrow money and such and then don't do exactly the same for the others there could be issues down the road. "Why did you help them and not help me? Don't you love me as much?"

Now I say all that know you don't owe any of them college, but if you helped one the others could resent it. Just something to consider.

The other thing I'd ask is what are you going to do with your time? Sit in front of the servers all day and become a slave to CoachT.com? Or are you going to go do things with the wife and the kids, go fishing, travel, etc?? What's the plan? If you don't have a plan for what you're going to I'd be careful hanging up the chalk.

If the lottery would just come through I'd retire tomorrow. I'd fish, hunt, go to ball games and visit all the Hooters I haven't been to. /roflolk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflolk:" border="0" alt="roflolk.gif" />

The kids understand. When I said "our goal" that includes them. Brynn made it very easy, actually, with scholarships and hard work. Mark is going for a six year degree, perhaps seven now because of his medical problems, and knows it will be up to him and, if he does have to take out some loans (whether I retire or not) then he should have the income to pay them back quickly. By not retiring I would be able to be SURE of the level in which we can help them but they might have to take some loans, regardless.

I sit in front of the computers all day now. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> It is, after all, 5:45 AM on Chriistmas morning as I sit and type this. By choice, though. It could be that I do that less after I retire than I do now but I would be doing other things to build the site, like visiting schools, etc. If I want to go fish I will but it is not the priority it once was. Once Elaine can retire, also, then we will travel a lot since I can do most of the site stuff from anywhere in the world. The travel would be a priority for us.

Elaine can retire next Christmas (she missed a semester while having the kids) but I don't think she will retire then. She loves the kids, the teachers around her, etc. and staying home with me all day may not be her first choice, either. That may all change if I retire and she has to get up and go to school each day while I don't.

I admit, too, that the kids I had this semester are the best I have had, throughout all of my classes. They made the class fun, learned a lot, and I missed less days this semester than any I have ever taught.

I guess what I need to do first is go sit down with someone from the retirement office and narrow down the income, insurance, and tax differences and see exactly where I stand. If the county changed the way they fund our insurance I might have to retire just so I can do so under the current contract.

Retirement at the end of this school year looks like an absolute certainty for both Elaine and me. Brynn has even got us a floor to ourselves in their new apartment they are moving into today, which is their 4th anniversary. And, there is Isabella.

Good luck to both of you, enjoy the grandchild.

Since this thread started I have done a lot of research on the financial end of things and have it pretty much under control. We will submit our retirement papers in February.

What part of political world will you be seeking afterwards and don't tell me you haven't thought of it?

P.S. When you retire, you will be opening a job for someone else...now that's creating another job the Obama team can get credit for in his stimulus plan. Congrats!!!

Nope, never thought about it. Too much of a temper and no patience with hypocrisy.

Filled out our retirement papers today and went to the board to ask some questions. Haven't filed the papers yet, not until I can get to my tax guy and ask some questions about deductions, etc.

Check - Too much of a temper

Check - No Patience with Hypocrisy

So what is so wrong with that? I'm sure the attitude with hypocrisy will soften...it's part of becoming elected official.

    • Agree with most of this and add that it takes a "type A" personality to be successful as the top guy. Lots of folks are knowledgeable of the game, have the skills to co-ordinate scheduling, officials, duties, rosters, etc... What they lack is natural charisma and the innate ability to convince young men that they care for them, and what they're teaching them will make them successful if they contribute their effort. Football can be learned...leaders are born.
    • Understandable. I honestly couldn’t remember. When you lose your starting QB especially in high school it’s a big blow
    • Gotta keep it real here.  Nobody is twisting their arm making them coach football.  There are more high school football coaches around here than ever.  Schools that have the same enrollment today as they had 50 years ago have 5-6 coaches instead of two.  Every head coaching vacancy will get a flood of applications.  Well over 20 at West Carroll from what I read earlier in this thread.  There's more men getting into coaching each year than are getting out.  The fact is that there are far too many high school football coaches out there.  Like I said, just keeping it real.
    • Off the top of my head WV finished 3rd and RC finished 4th. I think both lost close games in the first round. Overall they were pretty evenly matched last year.
