What's sad is that the really good players don't care if they get an education either....They just want what could be coming their way when they "do their time" as "college students"....

As for Pearl or anyone else going into Memphis..Why wouldn't they??...Memphis has great talent...The city isn't off limits to other coaches....I'm sure fans of Illinois,Michigan,Georgia and Maryland didn't like the fact that coach Cal went into those areas to get Rose,CDR,Dozier and Dorsey....I hope in the next few years with all those talented Memphis preps coming up they choose to stay in-state and play at Tennessee...

I would love to see these kids get an education but exactly what are they there for???...To win games...They(any program) had numerous coaches from numerous schools spending countless hours and money trying to persuade them to come to their school...Why??..To get an A on an English paper??..Hardly...They are there to fill stadiums, win games and make more money for the university....Although Rose by all accounts is a good student is going to have used Memphis to get where he wanted to be and that's the NBA...And not even complete 8 months in school...I think kids ought to have to stay at least three years in college...That would give the universities a return on their money spent on the kids and would also,in theory, give those kids an opportunity to get a college education by having to make the grades, show up in class and even mature some before they jump right into the NBA....

In a perfect world, yes,I would like to see universities have to graduate their student athletes...It's not though and there will never be anything done about..There will always be these studies and university presidents will give lip service to it and it will continue on as per usual...

By your numbers,Memphis and Tennessee wouldn't have been allowed to participate in the tourney(unless the threshold is very low) ...Pretty stiff penalty for doing exactly what they were recruited for..Winning basketball games... That may be a sad way to view things but that's how it is....

Yes , by my numbers Memphis stays out just as it should be. And Illinois,Michigan,Georgia and Maryland are all the kings of their respective states when it comes to recruiting.but sure they lose out on some recruits.

This is what you said: What's sad is that the really good players don't care if they get an education either heres what I say: If a coach recruits a kid it's the coaches job to make sure they get an education. If Western Kentucky can have such a high graduation rate why can't the other schools. Heres why, the coach could care less..thats why.

Heres what I say: That is the dumbest statement I have ever heard, that statement would get any coach at any level FIRED and I think you know why to. I respect your opinions for the most part but had no idea you looked at these kids as nothing more than dumb jocks and could care less about what happens after their playing days are done....at least they serve the purpose of filling our entertainment needs. Every so often on sticks his foot in his mouth..thats what you did.

This is what I say: The only thing you want these kids for is to entertain you. And yes the penalty would be stiff. Ever stop to think if the penalty was actually that stiff that the coaches and their staffs would be doing everything in their power to make sure these recruits got and education. Like I said if Western Kentucky and some of the others can do it why shouldn't the power BCS programs be held to the same standards. OH I forgot..they are there to fill seats and to entertain those of us that are much more fortunate in life.

I expect you to say...you didn't pay attention or you were only commenting on the parts that were less than complimentary. Heres how it works. People say things and mingle in a few good things like"oh I want all these kids to better themselves" or "oh its sad but we really can't do anything..but we really want these kids to succeed". Thats just to gloss over how one really feels. I am almost speechless..seriously I expected you to say something but nothing even close to what you said. I'll tell you something that may or may not suprise you. I have never ever posted this but I feel compelled to now. When i was going to school in Kenton half the basketball players were as dumb as a box of rocks and in noway were those players legitimetly passing...but they were never kicked off the team for grades. You know why ..because somehow they had passing grades. I was in the same classes and would bet money right now some cannot not do basic math and reading TODAY. It was much easier to skirt the rules back then. These were Marty Siscos players. He even taught american history to just about all off them. Sisco was a legendary coach but failed miserably as a mentor to his kids. I would say thats SAD to. Wonder how many people know about all that. If you don't beleive it go to Kenton and cross the railroad tracks and go talk to some of them..just a general conversation and then tell me those kids got a legit highschool diploma. Have you ever wondered why Weddle was a year late to a D1 school.

You seem to be informed on many issues. However, I have my doubts if you have any true life expierences outside of UC. Do you have any idea the life some of these kids come from other than what you see on TV? Have you ever spent time in some of these areas trying to help and mentor.A coach could take these kids and mold them into productive citizens and send them back to the real world with a college degree and a real chance for the american dream. Can you imagine if say 75% of every college athelete got a degree...the influence they would have on young people back in there community...thats how you solve the social ills of this country. Not just shuffle them throught and use them to win games...Imagine what it would be like today if say the last 30 years they all got degrees. My only point is that the chances of playing in the NBA or the NFL is most likely less that 1% and coaches know this, yet they don't make the genuine effort to push these kids in the right direction.

I finally got a chance to watch the game last night, well, the last 2:15. I had severely underestimated the choke job Tiger High performed.

First, Douglas-Roberts should have gotten T'd up for slamming the ball down. Second, with under 30 seconds left and a slight lead, ALWAYS pull the ball out and don't go for the layup. I had even been told there was attempts to foul before the three pointer was shot - I never even saw an attempt.

People said Cal has taken too much heat. I disagree, he should be taking more. Poor, poor coaching job. At least I got to see the famous "I can't believe this face". Classic. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

What you write is all correct Solomon. But your comments about laughing at Memphis' misfortune, especially after your team beat them, exposes you as a jealous hater.

Coach Cal is the Naismith coach of the year. Not coach Pearl.Pearl really coached 'em up in the vols annual sweet 16 loss, this year to Louisville. They looked like fools. And Pearl was stumbling around on the bench looking like he rode the short bus to the stadium. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Oh yeah,how many times has ut been past the sweet 16? Never! /ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" />

Nah, just a hater. Hated Tiger High since I was a kid, hated coach Cal since the UMAss days and have grown quite tired of his antics in Memphis, and get annoyed with people who wait until their team has accomplished something before they discuss it about as much and then come in bragging.

Believe me - never have I said pearl deserved any coach of the year awards this year. I've said it on here before, I was very disappointed in our team down the stretch.

I have been a Memphis fan since the old Metro days and have been talking them up all season. I took my medicine after Tennessee beat Memphis. It was a hot topic on the highschool boards. I'm not a Johnny come Lately. Doesn't say much for UT when the biggest win in the history of the mens basketball program comes in February /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

I like Memphis and UT both..but UT is far behind Memphis when it comes to winning and tradition in mens basketball. It's not even close. People talk about coach Cal which is cool,,,,,,Bruce Pearl reminds me of a used car salesman.

    • Agree with most of this and add that it takes a "type A" personality to be successful as the top guy. Lots of folks are knowledgeable of the game, have the skills to co-ordinate scheduling, officials, duties, rosters, etc... What they lack is natural charisma and the innate ability to convince young men that they care for them, and what they're teaching them will make them successful if they contribute their effort. Football can be learned...leaders are born.
    • Understandable. I honestly couldn’t remember. When you lose your starting QB especially in high school it’s a big blow
    • Gotta keep it real here.  Nobody is twisting their arm making them coach football.  There are more high school football coaches around here than ever.  Schools that have the same enrollment today as they had 50 years ago have 5-6 coaches instead of two.  Every head coaching vacancy will get a flood of applications.  Well over 20 at West Carroll from what I read earlier in this thread.  There's more men getting into coaching each year than are getting out.  The fact is that there are far too many high school football coaches out there.  Like I said, just keeping it real.
    • Off the top of my head WV finished 3rd and RC finished 4th. I think both lost close games in the first round. Overall they were pretty evenly matched last year.
    • I’m gonna be tapped in for that Marion Co. game 🪶 🔥
