Spain 3 Russia 0

Again I was really impressed by Spain. They play very creative attack minded soccer and their defense is very solid as well and basically shut down Russia all night. Even when they have a lead, they do not change their style of play by going into a total defensive mindset.

Russia and their speed of attack have been a problem for all other teams in this tournament, but if memory serves me correctly, Spain shut Russia down somuch that they may only have had one or two shots actually on target.

The Sunday game between Germany and Spain will be a thriller and undoubtedly brings the best two teams in the tournament together for the final. If Germany play like they did against Turkey yesterday, Spain will win. If both Spain and Germany are on top form, it may be way too close to call.

Online, since we're now halfway until I care about soccer again, what's it look like for the US in 2010? Given the rotation of world cups they seem to play by, we're due for a good run this time. Any chance of actually cracking the semi-finals if the draw falls right?

Solomon,

I think the US may be OK but I cannot really see them going beyond the Quarter Finals based upon what I have seen this year. The US played us (England) a month or two ago and to be honest England beat them with relative ease. This is an England squad that did not even make it to Euro 2008 so there is a long way to go.

Looking at upcoming talent, I would say the dominant teams for the 2010 World Cup will be Argentina, Spain Germany and Portugal. That being said, it all depends upon the groupings and how teams perform on the day. There are no longer huge differences between many of the teams and predictions are often difficult. Brazil are struggling a little at the moment but I would not be willing to count them out just yet. Same with Italy and France.

    • He may have possibly said that to get the best out of him. Back when I was in school word got out I was going to transfer and Coach Story popped off and ask Coach Wilson in front of the team if Maryville was going to get a jock strap in return on this trade. That got back to me and I got fired up and stayed just to show them up. Now today Coach Story is one of my best friends.
    • Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!
