Knox Halls Starters

Recommended Posts

After reading my earlier post, let me clarify a few things:

- James O'Laughlin had a great game for a Soph. and might deserve player of the game honors. I like him, and think he will be great someday.

- My point is this, great sophmores NEVER beat great seniors. I know this, and so do most others. Bearden showed last year what a great group of seniors can do. 17 and 18 year olds ALWAYS beat 15 and 16 year olds.

- I guess my concern is if he gets 85% of our offense(like last night), and he is a Soph., what does that say for the year? Again, a Soph led team will never compete with a JR and SR led team. Are we giving this year away for the future?

- Again, I think James is a very good player and young man. I just feel right now, this early in the season, I would rely more on the older boys. I could quote all the numbers from the scrimmages (and game) and you would be shocked at how well Zach Gibson has done.

My two cents, but nowadays two cents ain't worth much.

We are very thin in the secondary. The backups are hard workers IMO, but talent and experience drops off. #2 and #10 would have helped us last night. They should be back eventually. Now #4 is out for a while too. I heard he has a high ankle sprain.

Where is ZCAR? Haven't heard his take on things in a while.

Thanks for the invite Fairplay.

My thoughts after one game and let me say right off one game doesn't a season make either way. I usually like to see at least three games into the season to pass any thoughts either positive or negative.

I thought we played the best we could with what we had to work with. Perhaps a cop out but really if you watched the game you could see or predict how it was going into in the final quarter. I was proud of Halls last friday night. Coach Williams has a lot on his shoulders with the offense which hasn't a breakaway athlete that has come to the surface so far this year. I enjoy Ironman's posts and he seems torn on many posts but I like that he is very informative and you get his excitment or dismay no holes barred. He definetly isn't a cheerleader unless it's truely warranted. Fairplay we have been around a while and I have noticed you show the same passion a excellent attribute.

Now the team................

On the positive side we have experience, we have strength, we have a new system on defense. We have great fans and loyal parents and a coaching staff which is working hard to bring this program back to the glory days. The offensive line looked like pros especially on the right side you know the kids this is our strength no doubt. Next I was impressed with the Defensive line and our linebackers. The linebackers had two picks and nearly changed the game our favor. A great defense get me fired up when the pa announcer voices "tackled by a host of red devils" it puts chills down my back. The last couple of years this program has brought the Red Devil fever back to the community I love it when the kids are enjoying themselves on the sidelines after many hard workouts during the summer. This should be another excellent year for the program and a playoff spot awaits us.

Now some not so positive views. The injury situation how bad can it get. We have just about been decimated in the secondary. Why is this happening??? This is my main concern because as more teams are balancing their offenses the passing game has become a bigger part of most programs. I know that Powell, Clinton and Central have a decent to above average passing games this year. I am hoping our linebacking corp which looked great friday night can continue to keep the pressure on opposing QB's to let some younger DB's settle in.

No passing game whatsoever. When Dayton left the curtain came down. Maryville pretty much dared us to throw friday night and we kept our composure and did what we do best run. I agree with Ironman the fans were a little disgruntled but thats how things have to go until some of our playmakers return from injury.

Fullback. So important in a wing-t to have that grind it out big back to get the hard yards to keep drives alive or goalline pushes. Didn't see that push we have seen when Kelly was here I know Maryville's defense is good but they were good last year also.

Runningbacks need more north south instead of east west. Gibson needs more carries he is a straight on runner with speed. M'laughlin is slipperly and looked exciting on the early drives but looks small in stature I can't see him taking the beating Kitts took last year being the feature back. Only a sophomore he has a great future. As he gets a little more experience in varsity he will learn were the goaline is and zone in. Waggoner looked hurt and I never saw the speed I saw from him last year he was being tackled by the first defender most of the night.

I hope Turner will return I hate seniors getting hurt. If indeed it is a high ankle strain he won't play next week and I doubt he will be a DB for some time those just don't heal very fast. I hope we have enough personel to keep him at QB and not at safety when he does return. I was talking about this last year. A great kid but he gets hurt all the time. He runs the offense so well and is by far the best punter we have had in some time it's a shame he has to do double duty.

The big question is will Maryville run the table this year even when Chambelain is back? I really don't think so. I just didn't think they looked like the world beater they have been in years past. They are still a class program and have a great fan base they should have another good season just not a unbeaten one.

My personal opinion is Turner actually punted the ball last year as well or better than Logan or Ian.

Logans downfall was in the Powell game a couple of years ago at home when he put his knee on the ground not once but twice and essentially killed the game for us as we lost 14-10.

In retrospect they all three were great punters when called upon. Logan and Ian were just specialists at kicking from their soccer backgrounds.

My two cents -

- In today's paper Coach J said "we didn't make any changes, we just started getting a push and getting the yards.." WE MADE A CHANGE! #3 (Gibson) came into the game and stayed.

- That's a fact, pure and simple. What a slap in the face to this kid to minimize his importance to the turn around of this offense and that game. Again, what a slap in the face to imply it had nothing to do with him. WOW!

I hope he is not as sensitive as you. There were other pure and simple facts I noticed. #88 played tight end to give #45 some rest. Maybe that was the change that made the difference. Maybe it was #46 being at FB more last night. #34 was limping some. I hope it is not a slap in the face to those kids to not be mentioned too. Let's find a hero, and let's find someone to blame. That is real productive.

I am sure #23's big runs had little if anything to do with #3. I still think it had more to do with spreading the carries around and keeping the defense guessing. I have no idea why we don't mix up the carries when #6 is in more often, but I think the defenses are catching on. I would like to know how many times #23 gets the ball when #6 is in versus when he is out.

- I see your point. Truth is, things did change - namely personel. My two cents is the biggest cahange was #3. Your comment about #46 (Fitz) and #88 (Stienke) are well taken.

- #46 plyed like a man possesed, which was nice to see.I think #45 continued to play some while we had success, maybe you saw something I didn't.

- My point is this, SOMETHING CHANGED!! I think the biggest thing was #3 getting into the game.

- Sophmores don't beat seniors!! Never have, never will. WE ARE 0-2, that's a fact. If we choose to think "nothing changed", we will be 0-3.

the debate about running backs can be made all you guys want, the bottom line is until #10 and #4 come back from injury and get back in the secondary (our 2 best DBs IMO), we're going to be hurting. Also, #10 is probably our best threat to stretch the field at the WR position. I liked the rotation of LBs and Dlinemen last night. Seemed like both the first front 7 and second front 7 just had their way with SC on Defense. I also noticed #34 Burton playing defensive end quite a bit. I can't remember exactly as I was trying to keep up, but it seemed like we rotated 10 guys on the DLine last night and 6 or 7 at LB. I also think the difference in the first part of the game to the second was #46's kickoff return. It was at that point that the team actually woke up and started playing. Leading up to that point the team had no intensity that I could tell just sitting behind them. The play calls didn't appear to be any different which is what I believe Coach Julian was talking about in the paper. I also don't think a head coach would attribute an entire team's change in momentum to a player coming in at RB when another player sparked the entire team with a kickoff return where he had no blocking in front of him at all on the short kick. It's great that several on here are pumping support into #3 and I agree he needs to be on the field more on O, but the bottom line is that #23 needs to be running the ball the most. I'd like to know what his average yards per carry are.

I enjoy our discussion of our favorite team. I am not trying to be difficult. I might be playing devil's advocate a little.

My point was that the results may not have been soley about who was in the game. I noticed more twins in our formation in second half. That may have helped. It could be several things. I think some intensity changed. I think a more balanced running attack evolved.

About the subject of sophs beating seniors. You might want to look at Bearden's Young (a soph) who is making a huge impact on his 5A team (2-0). Farragut??™s Hudson is a soph, Webb's Blance (a freshman) had a huge game last night. Sensabaugh at DB helped turn around their season last year as a freshman. I could probably list many more.

#6 is a sophomore. But if memory serves me, I think he is older than those in his class. He played all youth ball with Gibson and the junior class until 8th grade and high school. That being said, he has more to learn. But IMO he should be no one's "back-up" as mentioned earlier. I do think there should be a greater number of carries for the other two and the FB. I think it should be pretty equal. It seems like when #6 is in, he gets the bigger share and the opponents are catching on. That is not his fault.

Like I said, I enjoy the debate. Let's get ready for the Battle of Black Oak Ridge.
