Chattanooga volleyball preview. This is much more complete than the Free-Press preview, which was basically a big story about GPS and a big picture of Givens (who is deserving of the recognition).

Chattanoogan.com came out with recognition of their top VB Teams and players and Coaches today. Toppint the list was Coach Paul Brocks GPS School which brought back this year an impressive group of players. Jasmine Brown, H.s. All American and 2 year All State, Heather Parma All State, Whitney Hamond All State, Megan Givens All State and Dana Myatt lead GPS. Red Bank,s Coach Christel Helton leads a team that has been acclaimed to have the top player in Chattanooga this year in Christine Teeter and Melany Gibson. Ooltewah is led by Coach Elaine Peigen and a young team which is expected to mature quickly along with the upper classman at the "O". East Ridge's Great Catherine Neeley brings Takeida Parham to the list with a team of players that have some potential. The rest of the list is Cleveland high, Notre Dame, Baylor, Walker Valley and Boyd Buchanon.

Making a wild prediction but I bet Red Bank will top the Chatt area Vball poll next week...................

78, Teter must be the real deal. One of the Brocks , and I am not sure which,, posted two weeks or more ago that she is the best player in Chattanooga this year. Looking at her stats, her kills were good but the setters had to dominate the game also. The match stats said to this poster that Bank controlled the match and did not let GPS get started, very unusual for a Paul Brock coached team who had huge credentials also. The inside of the arena must have had a lot of disbelief spread all over it.

I haven't seen her play in-person in about a year but I've heard she has improved. The Lawson girl has a strong vball background and much like her older sister has a very good all-around game. I felt from earlly on that this could be a great year for RB. Finnally, RB has a great coaching tradition and it appears Helton has stepped in and may be able to keep it going.

I am very familiar with the red bank team and I agree that they will be the team to beat. Christina is the real deal. She has been playing under Paul Brock's 18U club team since she was a soph. I have watched her progression and she has worked hard. It doesn't hurt that she has Courtney Lawson to feed her the ball. I have coached Courtney for 2 years and she is one of those players that can do it all, and do it well. Helton's daughter on the front row adds more height and skill. With a couple other role players, they will be hard to beat. Coming from someone who has been watching and coaching most of the current Chattanooga players, I would say you'll be hearing a lot more about Red Bank this year.

    • Tax payer dollars are paid for certified teachers to "teach" and then coach. The primary job is to teach.  There are some district that ay awesome supplements and others that don't. Dyersburg and Dyer County are pretty close if I remember correctly. I would imagine that Football and basketball are above $10,000 now.  I've heard that Milan is $20,000 for boys basketball. I would imagine that football is more than that in Milan.  Collierville has camps that coaches get paid extra for. 3 camps a year, 100 kids a camp, $30,000 right there.  There are places like Memphis-Shelby County schools where the supplements are garbage even for the head coaches. I made less than $3,000 as the head assistant at Germantown in 2015 when we were 26-4 and one of the best teams in the Southeast. As a head middle school coach next year I will make between $4-5,000 at a municipal in Shelby County.  Coaches should be compensated for the jobs that are required but lets keep in mind that they are educators first.  It's pretty frustrating to other teachers that work their tale off teaching 6-7 classes a day to watch someone roam campus, not teach (or have very minimal responsibilities), and get paid the same (more with supplements) as a person who has the some years of experience or sometimes less.
    • This will get coaches leaving the profession very quickly if this kid wins this case. This is absurd...
    • yeah money aint right there anymore
    • I suppose you are correct but from my understanding it was going to be a situation of the HC saying yay or nay to every play
