1999 State Title game...

A not-so-great game to end a very great season for MBA - one of the best this state has seen in the past decade as well as all-time. This game may be famous for the hit Barton Simmons laid on a CBHS WR that sent teeth flying all over the field and a CBHS parent seething from the stands.

This year's MUS team made a close run at laying claim to Division II's most dominant champion over its 12-year history, but to compare the two seasons:

> MBA's signature out-of-state victory was far more significant: MUS's 2008 29-22 victory over Olive Branch came against a good Mississippi opponent but one who hasn't seen a state championship in at least 28 seasons, if not ever. MBA's 26-21 vicotry over The Bolles School of Jacksonville, FL came against a program that was less than four years removed from being ranked number one in the nation for much of the 1995 season and who later had a coach (Corky Rogers) that would become Florida's all-time wins leader (career record of 375-68-1 at the end of 2008).

> MUS's out-of-division Tennessee wins came against five teams with a combined record of 26-31 (.456), only two of which had winning records. MBA's out-of-division Tennessee wins came against three teams with a combined record of 25-13 (.658), all of which had winning records and which and included the defending 5A champ in DI (Oakland) and a Pearl-Cohn program two years removed from back-to-back DI-4A titles.

> MUS's 2008 team had two shutouts, none in division; MBA had five shutouts, four in division.

> MUS's 2008 team had a division game decided by 7 or less points (11 of the 12 DII-Large champs have had either a loss or at least one game decided by 7 or less points); MBA's closest division game had a margin of 28 points (35-7 against McCallie in the playoffs), and MBA outscored its division opponents by an average of 40-5 (as compared to 39-11 for the 2008 MUS team).

> MBA's 34-point title game victory remains the largest margin-wise of all-time amongst the large DII schools by almost two touchdowns.

Don't get me wrong - MUS 2008 was fabulous, and clearly the best team I saw of all the title game participants in 2008 - but that 1999 MBA team still sets the bar in my opinion for the all-time best DII team in its 12-year history.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
