Miss Basketball?

Let's be realistic- Kayla Christopher was hands down the best single A player last year and this year- and it's not even close.

East Tennessee players historically have difficulty getting their recognition from the Middle and West TN media who votes for these awards.

Mark it down- anytime a player from Middle TN is up for the award ( just like last year) against an East TN player unless they are one of the top 50 players in America ( like Glory Johnson and Faith Dupree) the East TN player will lose no matter how much better she is - even if she is a national prospect.

Kayla should have won last year and this year.

I am just happy for KC that she can leave TN high school basketball behind and concentrate on her bright future in college basketball where she will get the correct recgonition she deserves.

Mark it down- Southern Conference Freshman of the year. She's one of the highest rated Freshman to enter the Southern Conference in a long time. She has the potential to not only emulate OS's laura hall's success, but become a Stephan Curry type ( Davison- Southern Conference) player that elevates a mid major power into a national program.

I know she is good.....BUT, she didn't even make the state tourney team, and 2 others from OS did....

It's been marked down! Looks like UTC will be in the Final-Four now!!

Middle Tennessee conspiracy? What a joke. Laken earned it and deserved it. Don't try to taint this award. You also said your girl would go to UT, UConn or somewhere equivalent. It didn't happen. As you can see, ratings don't mean a whole lot when it comes to judging high school talent. The coaches have the final say on who is a top rated player and apparently they didn't agree with your thoughts. . She is a good player and everyone respects her ability. Just leave it at that and let her "actions" on the court do her talking. The great players don't need a PR person.

Congrats to all the Miss Basketball winners and All-tournament selections. It was a good week of basketball and fun for all............

There's 2 things I don't like about the process.

1) I think postseason should be taken into account. Playing big in big games should account for something.

2) I'd like to know the breakdown of the panel is that decides it. It seems that Middle Tennessee players have an advantage. In 24 years in Class A, AA and AA, Middle Tenessee has almost as many Miss Basketball winners as East and West combined. If you live east of Knoxville you basically have no prayer. I know in Class A, East Tennessee has only had three Miss Basketball winners, Liz Strunk from Chattanooga, Brynae Laxton of Oneida and a girl from Greenback in the 80s.

You can't make everyone happy though no matter what and I'm not trying to say that any of this year's winners or past years winners were undeserving. You had two strong candidates in Class A this year and they don't split the award.

Good post Goose and i agree with you on alot of it. I too think the post season should be taken into account and had that happened Laken would probably have been last years winner as she played BIG in helping her team win the state championship. Now having said that if Kayla would have won it this year she too would have been equally as deserving! I've seen her play several times and she is a great player and a real pleasure to watch. I never seen the young lady from McEwen play but i'm sure she was equally as deserving. There was no "wrong" pick here IMO it just came down to who the voters voted for.

And who are they?

My biggest gripe is still that the award is based on the regular season. I say use the regular season to get your finalists and then have the committee meet when they do the drawing for seeds to determine the winner.

Last year, Leonard and Christopher were perfect examples of players that stepped up their game in the postseason and carried them to the state tournament and neither won.

This year Kayla Christopher led her team back from a 10-point deficit and scored 38 points in leading her team to the district championship. She then hit the game-winning three-pointer in overtime in the region championship game. In the sectional, she hit a game-tying three-pointer in overtime and then hit a game-winning jumper with 4.9 seconds left in the third overtime to put the Lady 'Cats in the state tournament. To me this is definitely something that should be considered when determining the best player in the state, but it's not even considered because the award is decided at the end of the regular season.

AHH, wouldn't we all like to know that info! The TSSAA Secret Society will not let that happen! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Goose I'm with you!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Kayla's 4 years at OS produced a record of 104-31, not too shabby.

It doesn't matter Goose. West Tenn voters will vote for West Tenn kids and Middle Tenn voters will vote for Middle Tenn kids and East Tenn voters will vote for East Tenn kids. Thats how It goes.

I agree. There are no wrong picks. It's kind of like the Heisman Trophy. A great player has to lose and different people have different criteria on who they choose. The Heisman people, however, don't pick their award with 25-30% of their season yet to be played. Could you imagine if the Heisman folks held their meeting at the end of October to choose the winner.

There is only one SMALL problem with your post, the voting for these awards are done BEFORE the State Tournament even starts, so winning a state championship CAN'T be the influence for the eventual winner of the award, as stated in your post!

I understand, but the same principle applies, 30-1 during regular season vs. 3-25, player A wins with a better team finish! As it should be...

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
