Powell Spring of 09

The stadium capacity will be considerably higher when the new stadium is completed. There will be seating on both the home and the visiting sidelines.

The demolition of the old stadium structure was completed last week and the foundation for the new structure is in the process of being laid. The Powell High football family appears to be very excited about having a modern facility to call home.

With the limited room on the visiting side how are they going to make it fit?

I've asked the same question and have been told by the powers that be that things will be adjusted to benefit both facilities that will work. I'm anxious to see what those adjustments are.

Does anyone know how many baseball players that will miss spring practice figure into the plans for next year. I know that tackle Austin Smith and linebacker Kolby Skeen will miss, but are there others? Also, with Smith playing baseball and Doug Ridge hurt, who will make up the O-line this spring?

I understand that there will be 5 or 6 varsity baseball players who will miss all or part of spring practice, depending on how far the baseball team goes in district and beyond, if they make it out of district. Powell is a good baseball team, but getting out of the district as a one or two is no guarantee at this point. There are 4 or 5 teams in the district capapble of getting out. I like Powell's chances, given that they are deep in pitching, but the bats have gone cold as of late. If they don't come back it won't be easy to advance on to regional play. A lot depends on rain outs during the district, too. If days are added, like they have in the past, it gives teams that aren't deep in pitching the opportunity to come back with ones or twos instead of having to go deeper in to the pitching staff. With one of Powell's strengths being pitching depth, the best thing that can happen, in my opinion, for the Panthers is beautiful weather with no rain outs so they can take advantage of a deep pitching staff.

The couple of baseball/football players that you mentioned, plus Drake Ownby, Zach Slagle, and a couple of others whose names aren't coming to mind at the moment, are going to be in baseball until Powell is eliminated. They are all being counted on to compete for significant playing time, if not starting positions, in football. JV baseball players who also play football won't miss any of spring football practice. They will be done before it starts.

As for your question on offensive linemen in the spring, it will be a great opportunity for some young o-linemen to get some quality snaps both in practice and scrimmage situations.

What about some of the Central transfer students? How many will see the field this year? When I say Central transfers I'm meaning the ones who were zone for Central then the new zoning shifted them to Powell..

At least a couple of them played last year, including Dyshawn Mobley, who played very well at a running back spot as a freshman. If you'll give me some names I'll let you know who else might have played last year and who might be expected to play a bigger role this fall.

Another name you probably know is Tony Foster. He was a significant contributor at the defensive nose tackle position as a freshman. If he makes up his mind to really work in the weight room and on the practice field he has an opportunity to be the next in the line of outstanding lineman from Powell.

I don't know many but I know of a few that goes there.. However, I know one by the name of Bernard Walker, he say he's going to be the starting QB next year. I know he's just talking out of his rear but I'm just asking will he see the field this year? He wears my cousin old number #4, so I told him he better wear that number and then be a lame player. My cousin played in the early 90's he was on a team with Rudy and your head coach Matt Lowe.

Next player is Andre Coffer..... You know his daddy and uncle was outstanding players at Rule therefore football runs his blood will he see the field this year?

Bernard is a good looking athlete that is still trying to find a position. He has the build of a tight end but I think they used him mostly on defense last year. I don't think Coffer is currently on the team. He had some issues and was not on the team at the end of last season. Besides Tony Foster some of the other guys that came over from Central last year and will contribute this year are BJ a Samuel Hamilton, with BJ playing offense and Samuel on defense going into spring practice.

Powell had a meeting today and sort of starting getting things lined up for spring. The top two running backs weren't there, their left tackle, backup QB, outside linebacker and a couple of others. Going into Thursday some of the strarters are Matt Meade at safety, DJ Hamilton at corner, Jonathan Staggs at corner, Landon Wright at WR, Austin Schwinge at WR, Tyler Powell in the slot, James Ussery, Ben Smith and Mike Norman on the line and Jeremiah Catlett at TE. Baseball and track are keeping a lot of kids away right now.

    • Quick update on Jacob -  Jacob celebrated his 16th birthday at Vanderbilt on Tuesday and has been in decent spirits.  His sense of humor has begun to show as he was visited by many friends.  He is swallowing a lot better now and has eaten some of his favorites (Chik-Fil-A and Five Guys).   He is getting prepared to head to Atlanta to the Shepherd Center first thing tomorrow morning.  His family has been waiting on insurance approval. In case you dont know the Shepherd Center it a world class facility and supposedly one of the best in the country for spinal injury rehab.  Praying for perfect results there. Considering the circumstances, Jacob is in decent spirits.  He has some reflexive movement in his legs which I think is probably a very positive sign.  Don't read too much into that just yet as there is no telling what the real prognosis is... just hopeful that is good thing.  I am really just happy that it seems like he has a punchers chance of getting something back.  He is a strong young man and very determined so I think he will fight as hard as he can in physical therapy while down in Atlanta. More than one of you has asked me about an address to send donations.  I know GoFundMe isn't for everyone.  If you want to go that route, you can make a check to "Blackman Wrestling Club" and we will pass anything received directly to the Kinderdines.   Jacob Kinderdine c/o Blackman Wrestling 4836 Trevino Court Murfreesboro, TN  37128 Also, want to thank everyone who has donated so far.  Jacobs dad will take a month off work and stay in Atlanta with him.  They need to learn how to take care of him and do home therapy work..... and surely Jacob will be glad his dad can be there.  All that could not happen without you all.  Depending on what happens, they will probably end up doing some home remodeling in order to accommodate Jacob at their home.  Thanks again. Here's a pic I lifted from Facebook of Jacob on Oxy talking to his Uncle.  LOL
