Cleveland Girls, Siegel Boys Claim Net Titles

The Cleveland girls made a statement in singles and the Siegel boys won it doubles as the two AAA schools claimed A division trophies at the ninth annual Champions Club Tennis Classic Saturdauy.

In the B division, the Soddy Daisy boys rallied from three points down after Friday to tie Arts and Sciences and Blackman won the girls crown.

Girls A Division: Region foes Cleveland and Ooltewah were tied (45 points each) going into Saturday morning singles and the Blue Raiders put their game into high gear on a picture perfect day for tennis.

Cleveland won six singles matches, including two head-to-head with the Owls, for a three-point lead entering doubles.

Ooltewah had a doubles champion in Wendy Rogers-Krysta Watlingto at No.3, but even though the Blue Raiders had no doubles champs, they did gain four points from two semifinal wins.

Cleveland finished with 57 points, while runner-up Ooltewah had 52, followed by defending champion Chattanooga Christian (48) and Red Bank (42) in the eight-team field.

???Our players know how to step it up when they have to and they did that today, especially in singles,'' said fourth year head coach Elizabeth Davis.

???This group works hard and winning this tournament gives them a good idea about what they can do in the future,'' Davis stated.

Cleveland had individual champions in Patten Feehrer (No.3) and Gabby Earby (No.6).

Boys A Division

Siegel was shutout in Saturday's singles play, but steadied itself in doubles to defeat defending champ McMinn County, 56-53.

Siegel led by two (47-45) after Friday, but McMinn County gained three points in Saturday's singles for the 48-47 lead prior to doubles.

Then Siegel scored the maximum nine points in doubles, while the Cherokees could only tally five.

???In a team meeting prior to doubles we talked about how doubles wins tournaments and the players went out and played well,'' said Siegel coach Jeff Martin.

Doubles winners for Siegel were Peter Elbaum-Brad Leeman (No.1) and James Farley-Evan Poe (No.3).

???Having a good showing in this tournament is a confidence booster for us,'' said McMinn County coach Susan Ray, who returned only two starters from last year's state runner-up squad. ???We surprised ourselves this weekend as we didn't really know what to expect.

???The team title came down to doubles and they played a little better than we did, but playing in this tournament is the best experience my guys can have all season,'' Ray said.

Girls B Division: Blackman claimed three singles titles and two doubles crowns to win the girls B division championship. Blackman won with 20 points, while Walker Valley was second with 13.

Singles winners for Blackman were Lauren Stephens (No.2), MacKenzie Travis (No.4), Alex Cumucio (No.5), plus doubles champs in Abby Schreiber-Stephens (No.1) and Alex Cumucio-Mackenzie Travis (No.2).

Boys B Division: Arts and Sciences led by three points against second place Soddy Daisy (11-8) at the start of the day, but then had to rally with a pair of doubles win at Nos. 2 and 3 at day's end to tie the Trojans, 17-17 for the title.

In a pair of head-to-head meetings in the final two doubles, CSAS claimed wins from Andrew Ball-Brian Wright (No.2) and Matt Blentlinger-Raja Moughrabi (No.3).

Austin Smith won at No.2 singles for the Trojans, while Alex Evers (No.5) and Moughrabi (No.6) were individual winners for CSAS.

Perfect Score: Siegel's coach Jeff Martin noted that the last time his boys team played in the Champions Classic (2005), the men ran the table - winning all 27 matches (singles and doubles) - and the next month won the AAA state title.

Familiar Foes: McMinn County defeated Siegel last year in the regular season dual and the sub state, and Siegel claimed the title this weekend.

Double Winners: Kayla Kelly (CSAS), Michelle Hawfield (Red Bank) and Michael Stephanioes (USN) claimed A division singles and doubles titles.

In B division, Lauren Stephens, Mackenzie Travois and Alex Cumucio all of Blackman won singles and doubles, while Raja Moughrabi was a two-time winner for CSAS..

Kudos To Champions: Tournament director Eddie Baker and assistant Richard Gamble put on a well run tournament with 324 matches played in two days.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..

    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
