Webb Netters Edge McCallie, GPS

Tornado Win Streak Ends

The Knoxville Webb tennis teams came to Chattanooga Wednesday afternoon and by early evening had won both East/Middle Region team titles with victories against three-time defending state champions McCallie and GPS.

The Spartan boys made school history with its first ever win against McCallie, 5-2, and the Webb girls topped GPS, 5-2.

McCallie (9-1) falls from the ranks of the unbeaten and also had its 35 home match win streak end. The last time McCallie lost at home was to Montgomery Bell Academy, 5-4, in April 2005.

???To say this is a big win for us is putting it mildly,'' said a smiling David Helbig, the Webb boys coach.

???We have never beaten McCallie in tennis and never even made it past singles.''

Webb claims the East/Middle Region title and will host the East/Middle No.5 team next week in the state quarterfinals. McCallie will host West No.3 in the quarters.

The Webb girls will also host No.5 from the East/Middle, while GPS hosts Baylor today at 4 p.m. to determine No.2 and No.3 in the East/Middle.

McCallie led 2-1 in singles with wins from Thomas Fanjoy (No.2) and Sawyer Voges (No.3), sandwiched around state champion Brandon Fickey's triumph at No.1 for Webb.

Webb tied it 2-2 as Reid Walling defeated William Disterdick, 6-3, 7-5 at No.4 and took the lead for good at 3-2 as Brian Carman edged Nathan Winters, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No.5. Carman trailed 4-1 in the third set before winning six of the final seven games.

The Spartans clinched the region title with an 8-3 win at No.1 doubles (Fickey-Walling). Webb also won at No.2 doubles as Carman-Hatcher fought off two match points and won 9-7.

???It's unfortunate not to win the region, and we knew Webb would be real tough,'' said McCallie coach Eric Voges. ???We will learn something from this loss and prepare for the team quarterfinals next week.''

Webb-GPS: Webb led 3-2 after singles and then won both doubles matches for the 5-2 win. The Garcia sisters, Guinn and Vicki, won at No.1 and are defending state doubles champions in Division II AA.

Region Tournament: The individual singles and doubles East/Middle tournament for boys and girls will be held Saturday and Sunday at McCallie. Matches will be played through the quarters on Saturday with semifinals to be played Sunday monrning followed by finals in the afternoon.

World Gold Medal: GPS coach Sue Bartlett was a member of the Great Britian 50s women's team which won the Seniors World Team Championship last week in Mallorca. Bartlett played doubles in the two singles-one doubles format. Great Britian defeated the three-time defending champion United States, 2-1, for the gold medal. This was the first time since 1983 that Great Britian had won in this age division. Chattanooga Christian coach Sue Webb also played singles for Great Britian in the women's 45s and her team placed seventh.

    • QUICK UPDATE -  First, I see a lot of wrestling names that I recognize on that GoFundMe.  THANK YOU so much for helping this family.   After the long surgery on Sunday morning to repair his neck, Jacob suffered a collapsed lung.  Sometimes this happens after long surgeries.  They had to put him on a ventilator to get his breathing back on track.  He came off the vent on Monday morning and they put a BIPAP on him to help control his breathing.  As of today, Thursday, the BIPAP came off and he is breathing well on his own.  He is working towards drinking a glass of water and hopefully eating some solid food at some point in the near future. Jacob can "feel" when someone touches his legs, but there is still no movement.  His parents are beginning to prepare for him to be moved to the Shepherd Center in the next few days.  He will be there in Atlanta for 30-45 days.  Im sure he will receive excellent treatment. Please continue to pray for healing for him and if you are so moved, please contribute to the gofundme link above to help in any way you can.  The go fund me is doing well, but this is going to be a very long road for these guys Im afraid.. Thanks again! Sells
