GPS Edges Baylor Netters

In another marathon match (4 hour, 45 minute) between GPS and Baylor, the host Bruisers edged the Red Raiders, 4-2, in a East/Middle Region tennis match Thursday.

With the win, GPS (7-2, 3-1) clinches second place in the region and an all important home match (state quarterfinals) next week against the No.3 team from the West Region. Baylor (9-4, 2-3) is fourth in the region and will travel to the West region champion for the quarterfinals.

Playing in the five singles, two doubles region format, GPS took a 3-0 lead with singles wins from Sarah Evans (No.1), Bronte Goodhue (No.2) and Lauren Schlabach (No.5).

Baylor then countered with a win at No.3 singles as Kelly Scruggs defeated Ann Elizabeth Holley who had to retire to due leg cramps in the first set tie-breaker. Scruggs led 3-1 in the tie-breaker.

Baylor pulled within one at 3-2 and forced the match to doubles as Sarah Berchuck rallied to defeat Meredith Morrow, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in a two hour, 45 minute match.

In the third set, the two players had six breaks of serve in the first eight games before Berchuck held serve for a 5-4 lead. She then broke Morrow in the 10th game for the win.

GPS clinched the win at No.1 doubles as Evans-Goodhue defeated Erika Marschall-Scruggs, 8-3.

???This was a tough, long match with Baylor as usual, and our players did well,'' said GPS coach Sue Bartlett. ???We had good wins at the top of our lineup and Lauren gave us a key win at five singles.''

Region Individual: The D-II East/Middle Region singles and doubles tournament for boys and girls will be held at McCallie Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's matches will go through the quarters, with semis being held Sunday morning and finals in the afternoon. The state tournament at MTSU is May 19-20 (team semis and finals), followed by singles and doubles on the 21st and 22nd.

    • You defend your little buddy bsatt like it’s the end of the world just as much. Why don’t you go on to Upperman with him this summer… you know he is your “BEST MAN”.
    • No sir. Not staying at East. But definitely not going to Elizabethton.
    • Football and basketball coaches should not be making 100,000 not teaching any classes unless their winning state championship every year lol
    • Im sure Nick Saban didnt have the final say at Alabama! That was not one of your brightest statements. How can you be that uneducated about football and blog about football? Its fair to name people who get arrested, its part of the consequences of their dumb mistakes as adults. You talk mess about the satterfields for way less. Are you that guys lawyer? I have never seen somebody defend someone so hard for something that could have been catastrophic.
