D-II Tennis Semis, Finals Sunday

Top Five Advance to State

Webb School state tennis champions Brandon Fickey in singles and the Garcia sisters (Guinn and Vicki) in doubles were two of the four top seeds to advance to Sunday morning's championship semifinals of the Division II AA East/Middle Region individual tennis tournament held Saturday at McCallie, Baylor and GPS.

Weather permitting, all of Sunday's matches are scheduled at McCallie with semis beginning at 9 a.m.

The Garcia sisters are the only defending region champion in the tournament and also the top seed with the toughest quarterfinals match.

Baylor's unseeded team of Erika Marschall-Kelly Scruggs pushed the state champs to the limit, before bowing 5-7, 6-2, 10-7. The Baylor duo can still earn a spot in the state tournament with two wins Sunday in the consolation bracket.

Fickey posted a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins, while No.1 Sarah Evans (GPS) posted the same score in the girls singles quarters. Evans is 12-0 on the season and has not lost a set since her 2008 state semis loss to three-time state champ and teammate Claire Bartlett, 6-0, 6-2.

In boys doubles, No.1 seed Chris Haydek-Reid Walling (Webb) stopped Leland Bardlow-Andrew Karpos ((MBA), 6-1, 6-3 in the semis.

Top Five Advance: The top five singles players and the top five doubles teams advance to the state tournament at MTSU, May 19-20 ??¦ The top three in singles and doubles from the West Region qualify for the state to form brackets of eight.

Those playing in the championship semis have qualified for the state and will play for positions 1-4 on Sunday, while the four in the consolation semis battle for that fifth spot.

Unseeded in Doubles Semis: GPS duo Meredith Morrow-Ann Elizabeth Holley upset No. 4 seed Katie Thornton-Sarah Berchuck (Baylor), 7-6 (4) 3-6, 10-7, in the semis ... Morrow-Holley are the only non-seed in both singles and doubles (boys and girls) to advance to the championship semis.

Siblings: Sisters Guinn and Vicki Garcia (Webb) are in the semis and are defending region and state champs ...Guinn has signed a scholarship to play at Wofford in the fall ??¦ Webb's Chris Haydek and teammate Reid Walling are in the doubles semis ??¦ Haydek's sister, Jenny, is in the conso semis in singles ??¦ No.2 seed Chris Schlabach (McC) is in the semis ... sister, Lauren, and her teammate Millie Earhart (GPS) play in the conso semis.

Sisters Wearing Different Colors: Freshman Kat Caire (conso semis in singles) is wearing the green and white of Harpeth Hall, while older sister Carolyn Caire (senior) wears the purple and black of Father Ryan in doubles (with Elizabeth Davis) ??¦ No.3 Caire-Davis are in the championship semis.

Twin sisters Audrey and Katie Colwell (sophomores) are the No.1 doubles team at Pope John Paul II ??¦ Katie is the older by one minute ??¦ They also played on the varsity as ninth graders with former teammate Gabriela Rangel who is now at Ole Miss.

The Brunsting Brothers: Senior Richard Brunsting plays for MBA, while brother Robert (sophomore) is at Father Ryan; both playing doubles this weekend ??¦ older brother Nelson was a member of three cross country state champion teams at Franklin Road Academy ??¦

The three brothers started at FRA in kindergarten ??¦ Nelson graduated from FRA ... Richard is now at MBA and Robert transferred first to MBA and then to Father Ryan ??¦ Their mother, Karyn, said she has let each son set his own path and pick a high school to attend.

Quick Learners: Richard and partner Russell Anderson have never played doubles together before Saturday and find themselves in the championship semis as the No.3 seed against No.2 Thomas Fanjoy-Sawyer Voges (McCallie).

What's Next?: Richard will attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in the fall to play tennis at the NCAA Division II level and later attend medical school and become an orthodontist ??¦ one of the top schools in that field is in Cleveland.

Double XX ??“ BGA eighth grader Maxx Lipman is 12-0 on the season and faces No.1 seed and defending state champion Brandon Fickey (Webb) in one semis ??¦ Fickey beat him a couple of years ago in the 14s ??¦ Lipman is ranked No.1 in the South in 14s and No.9 in 16s ??¦ A stress fracture in his back sidelined him for six months last year, but he has recovered well enough to win three regional USTA tournaments in the 14s and two in the 16s.

Older brother, Ryan, has been home schooled and will play tennis at Vanderbilt in the fall ??¦ Ryan is No.5 in the nation in 18s by USTA and No. 32 in the world by ITF ??¦ Their mother, the former Lisa Tamborello, played tennis at Vandy in the mid 1980s ??¦ Maxx and Ryan grew up taking lessons from Bill Tym.

Another athlete whose name ended in XX comes to mind - baseball hall of famer Jimmy Foxx.

Ryan, who began hitting tennis balls at the age of two, said that being home schooled has been best for him, affording him the flexible study schedule to travel the world playing tennis ??¦ He will play at Kalamazoo later in the summer in the 18s ??¦ Maxx said it would have been nice to have Ryan at BGA to play one season together.

What Might Have Been: If boys tennis had one division ... a winner-take-all 16-man bracket could have included, 2008 Division II AA champ, Brandon Fickey (Webb), 2008 Division I A/AA champion Will Reynolds (Chattanooga Christian, who is playing doubles this year), three-time defending Division I AAA singles champ Ian Chadwell (Centennial, who broke his foot earlier this week ending his chance at the illusive fourth state title), freshman Cameron Dickerson (Knox. Brearden), Division I AAA state runner-up Chris Smith (Science Hill), 2008 Division II AA state doubles champion Chris Schlabach (McCallie), BGA 8th grader Maxx Lipman (South No.1 in Boys 14s), his brother, Ryan Lipman (18s top-10 national ranking), who opted home school over high school and an undefeated freshman Nikola Slavick from Henry County (Division I AAA) who will most likely win Region 5 ??¦ This could have been one of the best fields top to bottom in several years.

Look Mom, No Shoes: Webb's Rajat Agarwall defeated Ben Rearden (Pope John Paul II) to advance to the consolation semis ??¦ Agarwall played part of the second set in sock feet due to his toes cramping ??¦ His father said that Rajat's shoes are too small and stated that a trip to a local sporting goods store to purchase a larger size pair of shoes might be on the post-match to do list.

Claire Bartlett: Former three-time region and state champ is now a freshman at No. 27 Virginia and will transfer to Florida in the fall ??¦ Today, Bartlett and UVA suffered a 4-1 loss to No.3 Duke in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis tournament ... Bartlett and teammate Jennifer Stevens gained UVa's only point with a win at No.2 doubles ??¦ In her final singles match for the Cavaliers, Bartlett fell to Melissa Mang , 6-3, 6-2, at No.5 singles.

Friday, the Cavs blanked No.45 Virginia Commonwealth, 4-0, in an NCAA first round match ??¦ Bartlett led her opponent, 6-1, 5-0, at No.5 singles when the overall match was decided.

    • Yep..could possibly have 3 teams ranked in top ten in the same four team district.
    • He had an opportunity to be the OC at TC without final say in the offensive gameplan. How does that work? Smh. Head Coaches are public figures regardless of the community size, and yes there are some out there, it’s irrelevant and not fair to them to name them on here. Also why is said “head coach” the head coach of the MS baseball program to begin with? Oh because no one wants it. As for the Lebanon question, I know what I’ve been told so just going off here say, some of the boosters were not happy with his roster decisions and wanted him out. Although he lead them to 20+ wins in multiple seasons
    • A head coach in the school system? No I dont think so. Head coaches are public figures in small communities. Not trying to slander, but this is an actual question. Do you know why he was forced to resign at Lebanon? This was his second chance.  He already left trousdale once and had an opportunity to come back a couple of years ago but spoiled that.
    • Are you perfect? Nope no one is, at the end of the day there are several teachers/coaches and even some in the Trousdale County school system that have DUI’s on their record. You’re correct on it being a bad mistake and it unfortunately could have ended horribly. While you consider the consequences minimal, I can assure you they are not. Ultimately I hope and have faith that he will learn from it and use it to better himself.
