Division II Crowns Region Tennis Champions

Defending state champs from Webb - Brandon Fickey and Guinn and Vicki Garcia in doubles - moved a step closer to another state medal by winning the East/Middle Region titles Sunday at McCallie.

Fickey, ranked No.2 in the South in the 16s, defeated Chris Schlabach (McCallie) in the singles finals, 6-1, 6-4, for his first region crown, while the Garcia's edged Samantha Lewis-Caitlin Casey (Harpeth Hall), 6-1, 6-3, in a successful defense of their 2008 region championship.

GPS junior Sarah Evans won her first region title in four tries, losing only one game in three matches. She defeated teammate Bronte Goodhue, 6-0, 6-0, in the finals.

The McCallie tandem of Thomas Fanjoy-Sawyer Voges defeated Webb's top-seeded Chris Haydek-Reid Walling, 6-4, 6-4. The second set showed seven breaks of serve, before Fanjoy served it out in the 10th game.

???We had an excellent two days of tennis as this region (Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville) has a lott of top level players, including a few highly ranked in the South,'' said McCallie coach and tournament director Eric Voges. ???This was a much stronger and more balanced region tournament that last year.''

Voges was also pleased with his team's performance.

???McCallie had a finalist in singles and our doubles teams finish first and fifth, so we are taking five of our six seniors to the state individual,'' Voges stated. ???Three of those five were not in our top six last year so this is their first time to play for a individual title.''

State Qualifiers: The top five in singles and doubles from the East/Middle and the top three from the West advance to the state quarterfinals Thursday May 21.

Top Four Seeds Hold Up: Boys singles seeds finished 1-2-3-4 ??¦ girls singles seeds finished 1-3-2-4 ??¦ boys doubles seeds finished 2-1-3-4 ??¦ girls doubles seeds finished 1-2-3-unseeded, with #4 taking fifth.

Looks like there will be a great Spring Fling in the "Boro.

We heard one of the parents was removed on Saturday for coaching his kids. Any truth? How does the tssaa police this? are there usta officials onsite and do usta rules apply?

thanks for the heads up . did not know this happened. Eric Voges at McCallie evoges@mccallie.org or tssaa office should be able to answer this ...

Eric was tourney director but there was play at GPS, McC and Baylor on Sat. do not know where this happened.

b.b.b.

as far as I know, USTA rules do apply ... high school matches are different than usta matches in that high school coaches can coach between points, games, etc. ... in a usta match, no one is suppose to assist a player in any way - no communication of any type - hand signs etc. - except between second and third sets.

Sounds like that the spring fling will be very interesting. What was the score of the Lipman and Fickey match? How was that a semi-final match and not a final?

Was the parent from Webb?

score was 3,3 I believe. seeding committee put #3 Lipman vs. #1 Fickey in one half ... #2 Schlabach and Lipman would be a good match. Lipman and Fickey meet again on Thursday at Webb in the team quarters.

will be interesting to see the seeding for the eight singles boys at state. I'll e-mail Eric on the parent issue.

Could it have been that father of the girls doubles team? Rumor has it that he has been known to do this in the past.

All I heard is that it was a Webb dad. Pretty sad and unsportsmanlike if it is true. If so tssaa should ban him from the site. of course they won"t.

the "usual suspect" was removed. I won't name him but he lives in Knoxville, his two daughters are the top doubles team and would win without the on-court coaching.

I've never heard of them having a "rep" for that. Secondly, every team has a parent or parents that care a great deal about their kids playing, and do the utmost they can to try to help their kid win. It's a little outlandish to single out Webb because of an incident that no one seems to even know the facts about (and I dont know anything about it either). I guess we'll see who the real winners are come Wednesday.

    • hey goat! how’s monterey looking this year?!
    • several people actually. they said “snoball, do you know who railbird81 is on coacht?” I said, “never heard of her.” they said, “you ought to check it out they’re getting fired up on there like the old days.” well, you can imagine my disappointment when I came here expecting sharp, witty banter and all i found was more akin to toddlers slap fighting. and what looks like 1 guy/gal talking to themselves with multiple accounts.
    • Shopping? His family is loaded and he's 6'6 I'm pretty sure he could start anywhere in upper East TN,So no need to shop. Word is Witten got caught trying to work him out on campus and some 7 on 7 while playing athletics for Sullivan East. Word got around pretty quick and Someone turned them into TSSAA.
    • Quick update on Jacob -  Jacob celebrated his 16th birthday at Vanderbilt on Tuesday and has been in decent spirits.  His sense of humor has begun to show as he was visited by many friends.  He is swallowing a lot better now and has eaten some of his favorites (Chik-Fil-A and Five Guys).   He is getting prepared to head to Atlanta to the Shepherd Center first thing tomorrow morning.  His family has been waiting on insurance approval. In case you dont know the Shepherd Center it a world class facility and supposedly one of the best in the country for spinal injury rehab.  Praying for perfect results there. Considering the circumstances, Jacob is in decent spirits.  He has some reflexive movement in his legs which I think is probably a very positive sign.  Don't read too much into that just yet as there is no telling what the real prognosis is... just hopeful that is good thing.  I am really just happy that it seems like he has a punchers chance of getting something back.  He is a strong young man and very determined so I think he will fight as hard as he can in physical therapy while down in Atlanta. More than one of you has asked me about an address to send donations.  I know GoFundMe isn't for everyone.  If you want to go that route, you can make a check to "Blackman Wrestling Club" and we will pass anything received directly to the Kinderdines.   Jacob Kinderdine c/o Blackman Wrestling 4836 Trevino Court Murfreesboro, TN  37128 Also, want to thank everyone who has donated so far.  Jacobs dad will take a month off work and stay in Atlanta with him.  They need to learn how to take care of him and do home therapy work..... and surely Jacob will be glad his dad can be there.  All that could not happen without you all.  Depending on what happens, they will probably end up doing some home remodeling in order to accommodate Jacob at their home.  Thanks again. Here's a pic I lifted from Facebook of Jacob on Oxy talking to his Uncle.  LOL
