Who is the genius who provided us with the magic number 100? Why not go down to 75 or 50? What is it about #'s?

Pitch counts, at least the important ones, have more to do with pitches per inning than pitches per game. For example: 125 pitches in ten innings (12.5 pitches per) is totally different from 125 pitches in 5 innings (25 pitches per). Dads, be more worried about little Johnny learning to "work through it" when he struggles. Working out of a jam is one thing, throwing 40 pitches in an inning is another.

It is interesting that so many people like to toss around the words "old school" and "when I played." For most of us, those are the days of no pitch counts (at any level), the four-man MLB rotation, and before Tommy John surgery was as common as removing tonsils.

This may have already been discussed, but I wonder this. If a team has only two coaches and both are confined, then who coaches the bases? KIDS? I thought we were stressing keeping the kids in the dugout? What a lame --- rule this is. This is just another way of letting BAD umpires who can't handle THEMSELVES professional enough to speak with a coach about a call that they may have blown.

I bet if you paid the umpires more money they would make better calls... eg. pay teachers more they would be better teachers......

I know the topic is, biggest rule change in years, but the worst rule change in years is restricting coaches to the dugout. If a coach does enough to be restricted, he has done enough to be ejected.

The reason this new rule regarding assistant coaches is in is to make the head coach accountable for members of his team, including the assistants.

Well, that clears it up, we were all wondering why.... It's the money! Give them more so they will get it right:)!

if i'm not mistaken, the umps will be making $65 (each) a game this season. Thats $130 a game not bad money for an hour and a half or 2 hours. In the end that is alot of money through a 30 game season for alot of small single A schools to payout to the umps but TSSAA doesn't worry about that they worry about assitant coachs staying in a box, just doesn't make any sense

And next year, it goes to $70 per official. Geez, those umps are making a fortune.

I may be reaching here, but I don't think you become an umpire to get rich! There are some really good umps who love the game of baseball and want to just be involved in making it better for the kids! You can spot them a mile away! Just like you can spot those who have an attitude problem! It's that second group that has fans and coaches alike frustrated!

Red Dog I really hope you were kidding when you said pay umpires MORE. Think about this. If an umpire does just 30 games a season he makes over $1900. That is more than most coaches make for coaching baseball, working on the field, planning workouts, fundraising, dealing with discipline and parents etc. Alot of time to put in to have some of the really bad umpires with a chip on their shoulders make bad calls and not have ANY reprimand what so ever. And lets not forget if a coach is ejected it's a $250 fine, probably a 4th of most of their supplement for coaching. Point being coaches do it cause they love it, so they expect the same out of the people who can help determine the games outcome. Just be professional and APPROACHABLE, Thats all coaches ask.

Keep in mind this rule is not from the umpires or TSSAA it is from the NATIONAL FEDERATION OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. I have been a TSSAA umpire for 6 or 7 years and thinking back at no time would i have had to apply this rule to any coach. Most coaches handle themselves appropriatly when they disagree with a call and generally not an issue. So dont get yourselves all bent out of shape over this rule as you will see that it wont be an issue as most assistant coaches do not charge at umpires anyway

    • QUICK UPDATE -  First, I see a lot of wrestling names that I recognize on that GoFundMe.  THANK YOU so much for helping this family.   After the long surgery on Sunday morning to repair his neck, Jacob suffered a collapsed lung.  Sometimes this happens after long surgeries.  They had to put him on a ventilator to get his breathing back on track.  He came off the vent on Monday morning and they put a BIPAP on him to help control his breathing.  As of today, Thursday, the BIPAP came off and he is breathing well on his own.  He is working towards drinking a glass of water and hopefully eating some solid food at some point in the near future. Jacob can "feel" when someone touches his legs, but there is still no movement.  His parents are beginning to prepare for him to be moved to the Shepherd Center in the next few days.  He will be there in Atlanta for 30-45 days.  Im sure he will receive excellent treatment. Please continue to pray for healing for him and if you are so moved, please contribute to the gofundme link above to help in any way you can.  The go fund me is doing well, but this is going to be a very long road for these guys Im afraid.. Thanks again! Sells
