Fifty Best Prep Wrestlers in Tennessee State History

Compiling a top 10 best in this country is nearly as American as mom, the flag and apple pie.

From the 10 toughest guys in your neighborhood growing up, to rock-n-roll’s greatest hits of the 60s to the best utube videos.

How fiting, on the Eve of the 50th of the state wrestling tournament (Feb. 18-20), to name Tennessee’s best prep wrestlers in the past half century.

It’s a given that today’s mat warriors are more skilled than their predecessors from a generation ago and possibly even a decade ago. But in an effort to honor the past wrestlers - upon whose shoulders today’s wrestlers stand – and the present champs, here is not only the top 10, but the 50 best high school wrestlers in Tennessee.

The criteria includes one’s high school career complete with at least one state title, success at senior nationals and cadet and junior freestyle and greco-roman nationals at Fargo, N.D., with college achievements a plus.

Mid South Conference: The vast majority of wrestlers who competed in the prep school Mid South Conference (1949-1970 for wrestling) did not compete in the state tournament; thus, are not eligible for this list.

But the handful of Mid South wrestlers who were allowed to compete in the 1961 and 1962 state tournaments are eligible and some did make the list as state champs.

The national prep champions from the Mid South are listed at the end of the story.

No doubt, several can and will argue for wrestlers in their region of the state over others which makes the discussion interesting, stimulating and welcome.

No Tonys, Oscars or Emmys are awarded and no checks handed out to the top 10. Just an opinion, yet hopefully an educated one, with solid input from across the state.

One wrestling official stated that, "We are not re-writing The Bible ... this is just an opinion!''

Those champions who stand out from the hundreds, yes maybe thousands of teens who have dared to walk alone to center mat in the squared circle before roaring student body’s to test their abilities against another in honorable combat.

Warriors who have pushed themselves to the limit and beyond and have stood alone on the top step on many a Saturday afternoon, when in a six-minute span of time, which seemed an eternity, boys become men and legends in our sport.

To all who have wrestled and worked hard we salute you and to those who have reached higher we acknowledge those accomplishments as well.

With that, here is the best of the best; those with sterling credentials and lofty numbers.

The main schools competing in a variety of sports were Baylor, Castle Heights Military Academy, Columbia Military Academy, Darlington, McCallie, Sewanee Military Academy, St. Andrew’s, Tennessee Military Academy.

Ernie Rose from the old Chattnooga Kirkman school won 3 title in the 60's all at 185 I think. and Glad you mentioned Carlos Thompson . He has 9 or 10 state championship rings in wrestling, football and track, individual and team combined, I think.

Also Ernie won best wrestler in 67, and Ronald Moyers won at 145 in 65 and 66. Also for Chattanooga Kirkman.

B.B.,

Thanks for taking the time to research, write, and post this. It is a very interesting read.

Of course we all have those we would like to have mentioned, see higher, or lower, etc.

One suggestion that I think might help keep it relevant to some of the newer readers and make it easier to update for you: consider adding another section near the bottom of wrestlers currently competing that may eventually warrant an addition to the list.

Being a new reader and fan of wrestling, I think it's a good ideal for a section of current wrestlers. :thumb:

It looks like a great list. One thing that you may want to consider is any wrestler that is a high school All-American (Amateur Wrestling News & Scholastic Wrestling News, High School Senior Nationals AA, or USWF/USA Wrestling Junior Nationals AA) should be moved to the top of the list if the criteria is based on high school accomplishments. During the early years of Tennessee high school wrestling the only way for kids to become an All American was Scholastic Wrestling News & Amateur Wrestling News. Don't discount the guy's that were Prep School National Champions as that tournament has always been much tougher than the Tennessee State Tournament.

Good morning from Florida City, FL. It is in the 70's & raining today but that is better than the ice & snow back in Tennessee. I received an email this morning that Father Ryan has had seven High School All-Americans: Tim Wilson (Scholastic Wrestling News), Erick Woods (?), David Thoni (Scholastic Wrestling News), Jamie Castleman (USA Wrestling Magazine), Jimmy Hiller (3rd or 4th @ High School Senior Nationals), Raymond Dunning (3rd High School Senior Nationals) & Whit Dunning (All-American @ High School Senior Natinonals).

It seems like Brian Dunning (Hillwood) & David Scott (Hillwood) placed at the Junior Nationals.

I do not know how you do it. Yet again you have gone above and beyond the call. Thanks for your time and effort on your research. Thanks again for all you do and all the great articles on The Chattanoogan and look forward to more. :thumb:

"Mr". Branton: Fantastic job as always. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. No one else would have taken the time to do this. And no one else has the knowledge of Tennessee high school wrestling that you do. Where do you get this stuff? For these efforts, you deserve to be given the most coveted title awarded on this board by President Bear Cat Brown.

Bear Kitty: Don't you agree? For his body of work and his love of wrestling, shouldn't BB be awarded the title of "Mr", your highest award?

Thanks Sir BBB. Can you reveal any of the panel that came up with this outstanding list?

Also Tyner had some lightweight beasts in the early to mid 70's, Gary Humphries, Tommy Bonner, and David Noblitt all won state championships. I am pretty sure Noblitt wrestled at UTC but I might be wrong.

I don't remember Stratford ever being called "North" Stratford though.

Daniel Waddle has won 1 Southern Conference tournament championship.

That might be a co-op team of Stratford and the old North Nashville High. Kennedy's title was in the next-to-last year of North's existence. (North served what's now called the MetroCenter area in the Pearl-Cohn zone.) TSSAA lists him as Stratford.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
