Whats everyone's thoughts one tomorrow's track meet at D.B.?

How did the Valley look at the track meet at D-B yesterday?

DB, as always a beast on the track. But South has speed and jumps. Pickwell goes 6'8 which is 2" better than state top jump last year. Watterson goes 15.3 in the 110 which is way ahead of the first of last year. Lots of footballers, even linemen are running. Even the 4x100, mostly sophs, is right with DB, but DB fell on last pass. South won in 45.9. Distance runners get personal bests almost every run. south in top three in most mens events. Maybe not as many ladies running as in past but good performance by many. And they look like they are having fun. The big blob of columbia blue in the infield is really pretty too. :thumb:

South had to easily come in second in the 6 school meet.

It was early in the season and a little cool as well. Some athletes weren't pushing hard yet.

DB has very good middle and long distance, both boys and girls. Hope the two young men who fell in the spring relay handoff are recovering well. Looks like they both got some pretty bad track burn. The young lady with the blonde long hair who sprints for DB is an impressive runner in everything she enters as well. Science Hill wasn't there, and their ladies team is traditionally tops. In boys' sprints, I would expect to see Sensabaugh and Steele (as he returns from baketball) from DB, Watterson and Riddle from South, and the young man from Greeneville around 10.9 or better in the 100M as the season progresses. Not sure of their potential in the 200M. Like I said, it's early yet.

As far as Sullivan South goes, as the season progresses, I've been impressed to see the positive direction Coaches Hilton and Jordan are taking the team. They had like 70 kids com out for track. Wow! I wouldn't be surprised to see Pickwell get close to 7'. He finished 2nd in state last year and had very very little instruction on high jump at that point. Pure raw talent. His form is much better this year and the sky's the limit. He'll be a steal for some college who could let him jump and play roundball. Watterson hit 4 hurldes, hitting one hard enough that it broke but still had a 15.3. Finished last year before the slight hammy thing at Oak Ridge, with a 15.1. I've seen him in practice looking much faster and smoother this season. If he isn't in at least the mid 14's by season end, we'll kick his tail! HAHA :thumb: His quad was cramping a bit in the 100M run later in the meet, so after that he opted out of the 200M. Too cool to push anything. Hoping to see him in the state decathlon this year as well. Allot of South underclassmen are stepping up this season for the Rebels. Crowe looks really good in the 400M. I personally think he could be a 49 sec guy. The Rebs lost allot of sprinters to graduation last year. Allot of football players are out there working and contributing, which is great. I did notice one of the sprint relay included three linebackers - :?: You don't see that everyday. The Rebs will get an extra boost when Riddle visits from the baseball team later in the season. Riddle won the fastest back in the football jamboree last season. I do miss seeing Abby Fletcher on the track. I truly believe she could win several events incl the hurdles and be a force in the girls multievent (heptathlon?). I understand she is concentrating on offseason roundball. The Reb girls' team misses her points. ;)

    • As I said somewhere earlier in the thread, the original plans had no outdoor athletic facilities being part of the campus.  The original plan was for HVA to use facilities at nearby schools.  Very late in the process they came up with a plan and found budget to have minimal facilities and crammed them in to space that never was intended for athletic facilities.
    • Agreed, the way the field is turned you get the evening sun blasting right into the press box making filming a nightmare there, plus its so low.  The field is land locked and parking is a nightmare too. Seems like Knox County could have done a lot better there with the design and the quality.
    • I think this upcoming team may be pretty good, they will definately be better up front and if they can replace Dozier, Heyward and Rembert, they can be real good. They have the same strange schedule, but this time with 5 straight home games. The road games at Jeff County, Powell will be tough to open up with and the back side at Bearden is the tough game there.  One question I had if anyone knows: There has been some talk of an indoor practice facility in the past, with the new track area now more of a track area, that kind of leaves a need for a football practice area. Just sayin....
    • I find it hard to believe that 70% of a schools enrollment is zoned for another school district
    • I was told that the indoor facility is happening regardless of the vote on the taxes but it would be a much bigger project with more funds if they vote goes through
