Webb vs Davidson Academy

Webb ran into a very fired up DA team last night and fell behind early as DA took a quick 6-0 lead and forced Webb to punt on their first two possesions. Once Webb settled down they started playing their game and just kept coming after DA on both offense and defense.

For the game Webb piled up almost 450 total yards while limiting the DA offense and allowed DA only 15 total yards in the second half.

For the third game in a row, Webb played without their leading rusher and DA obviously was keying on the younger of the Blance brothers who still was somewhat effective running the ball. Webb's other running backs stepped up big to combine for 294 yards rushing on the night. Webb scored twice on pass plays and ended up with 146 yards of passing on just 5 completions. DA has some impressive looking athletes but in the end Webb was just too much for them.

I was looking forward to watching the Williams kid run the ball. He had a big first half and then Webb pretty much shut him down in the second half as he only gained 23 yards. He finished with 114 yards on 22 carries. I was surprised when I saw him in person as he looked to weigh a lot more than I thought he would. I'm glad he has been able to come back from the knee injury to play his senior year because no kid should have to miss their senior year. Dixon was tough last year against Webb and he was even better this year on both sides of the ball.

DA's coach was quoted in the Knoxville paper today as saying that Webb "just physically mashed" them in the second half which became obvious as DA seemed to tire and lose the emotional high they had early. It probably could have been worse for DA, after Webb scored on the pass play early in the fourth quarter, they spent the rest of the game running clock and limiting their plays to traps and wedge runs off tackle.

Webb has earned a first-round bye and home field for the playoffs, so if they continue to maintain their focus and get their leading rusher back, I expect they will have a great shot to return to Cookeville and defend their state title.

DA brought a huge crowd and it was a great atmosphere and night for high school football. I hope all of the DA folks made it home safely.

Congratulations to Knox Webb for their win over Davidison Academy. Webb has a very fast and talented team and hopefully we can meet again in the playoffs. I also wanted to comment that Webb has a beautiful campus and football facility. I was also proud of the way both teams and their fans handled themselves with good sportsmanship and "fansmanship". Lastly, "I hated my Bears lost but didn't really want to pull a trailer back to Nashville so it wasn't all bad", he says kiddingly. Good luck during the playoffs.

all in good fun my friend! But seriously, it is a NICE double wide made by Norris Homes with a deck and everything. See you in the playoffs!

Great game, great atmosphere, wonderful time. The outcome wasn't what us Davidson fans were looking for, but it happens. I will say this, with all the talk of Webb's line being new this year and down from last year, that didn't show one bit. I wish that at Davidson we could say we were down on the line and still be as big as what yall had out there. We have 1 200 pounder, thats down.

    • Agree. The man literally sacrificed time, moments, memories you can't get back with his own family for every single athlete at that school. (and many others) To those that continue to be negative about him and continue to bring him up; He's been loyal, hardworking and just his entire coaching career. Ask anyone that actually has a leg to stand on in regard to Coach.
    • Egotistical? That's a new one.  It's funny, I'm friends with two of the younger coaches that he "ran off" as you say. In fact, he helped them find jobs, encouraged them to do what was best for their growing families, provided advice, support and still does to this day.

    • Track has always been big at OR. Ran off about 7 straight titles in the 60s. Your hate for Gaddis runs deep, huh? What did he ever do to you, to make you disdain him that much? You can’t seem to stop talking about the guy. He’s living rent free in your head. Might wanna get that checked out. Not good to go to the grave with that in your heart.
    • This late in the year, you’d have to think they’d go with an Asst. on staff, right? I’m pretty new to the area so still learning how folks do things around here…if Woods stays there to teach, it could be hard on a new guy/staff coming in…
