Best of Preps Finalists

Olivia Harrison

Houston junior

Harrison was named MVP of the state championship game, scoring twice and assisting on another as the Mustangs routed Franklin, 6-1, to win their second straight title. For the season, the speedy Harrison had 38 goals and 19 assists to lead the Mustangs to a 21-1-2 record.

Gracie Irby

Germantown junior

One of the top defenders in Tennessee, Irby was named to the Tennessee High School Soccer Coaches all-star team. She helped the Red Devils post eight shutouts while also chipping in with eight goals, including three from the penalty spot.

Bethany Bunker

St. Agnes junior

Bunker earned Division 2-AA all-state recognition after helping the Stars reach the state tournament. A hard-working, all-energy forward, Bunker had seven goals and nine assists while being named West Region offensive player of the year.

Madison Cobb

ECS junior

A standout defender who was named region and district Most Valuable Player while also being named the top Division 2-A defender in the state. Her stellar efforts helped the Eagles finish the season with an 11-3-3 record and the West Region tournament title.

Julie Eckel

St. Benedict senior

Arguably the most versatile player in the area, Eckel starred in attack and in goal as

the Eagles went 8-3-5 and advanced to the Division 2-AA quarterfinals. The Tennessee signee had plenty of shutouts as the team’s goalkeeper, but also saw playing time up front.

Coach of the Year

David Wolff, Houston

Wolff coached the Mustangs to their second consecutive state championship in 2010. Houston finished 21-1-2, capping the year with a 6-1 victory over Franklin in the title game.

The list isn't bad. However, I can't believe Carmen Manes isn't on the list. She is one of the top players in the area in any division. I was actually expecting to see her as one of the finalist.

She sacrifices her offensive game to play defensive mid, controls the midfield and let's others play the glory positions. She could be racking up points. I have watched St. agnes play many times in the past couple years and Carmen being left off the list is just not right. Coach Irby is a great pick for coach of the year. Not because his team has won back to back titles, but because he works harder than any coach in town(boys and girls). I don't know him at all, but I see him at games all over town scouting opponents. Houston is very fortunate to have him.

I tried to post shortly after you commented on Carmen, but I have just been reading and not ranting for some time. As a result, I could not get my post to send. If this does in fact hit the message board, I'm back!!!!!

I could not agree with you more regarding Carmen. My daughter, now in college, played with her for 2 years in high school and I saw every game. I saw many of Carmen's junior year and a few of her Sr. year. Last year she was BOP and All-State. She has won many accolades and always worked her rear off in every assignment. As someone else said on the All-state thread "hanky-panky" enters the picture sometimes. At the risk of having to re-enter my anger management therapy, I will stop there.

She's a great girl and should have been recognized. I hope she keeps in the game and plays at the next level. I hear she has opportunities and congratulate her for having options.

In keeping with old dog traditions, I don't think there is a Coach Irby. Was that a slip of the tongue???

Coach Wolff is the Houston coach and is one of the hardest workers out there trying to build a championship squad every year. Look's like he's got it working. Congratulates to Houston as well.

Thanks for correcting. I meant Coach Wollf. I think he is great. Also thanks for speaking up for Carmen. I heard she was looking to play at the next level and has opportunities at every level. She is also a very bright student and may decide to concentrate on her academics. I hope she gives the college soccer experience a try. She has a real gift.

    • hey goat! how’s monterey looking this year?!
    • several people actually. they said “snoball, do you know who railbird81 is on coacht?” I said, “never heard of her.” they said, “you ought to check it out they’re getting fired up on there like the old days.” well, you can imagine my disappointment when I came here expecting sharp, witty banter and all i found was more akin to toddlers slap fighting. and what looks like 1 guy/gal talking to themselves with multiple accounts.
    • Shopping? His family is loaded and he's 6'6 I'm pretty sure he could start anywhere in upper East TN,So no need to shop. Word is Witten got caught trying to work him out on campus and some 7 on 7 while playing athletics for Sullivan East. Word got around pretty quick and Someone turned them into TSSAA.
    • Quick update on Jacob -  Jacob celebrated his 16th birthday at Vanderbilt on Tuesday and has been in decent spirits.  His sense of humor has begun to show as he was visited by many friends.  He is swallowing a lot better now and has eaten some of his favorites (Chik-Fil-A and Five Guys).   He is getting prepared to head to Atlanta to the Shepherd Center first thing tomorrow morning.  His family has been waiting on insurance approval. In case you dont know the Shepherd Center it a world class facility and supposedly one of the best in the country for spinal injury rehab.  Praying for perfect results there. Considering the circumstances, Jacob is in decent spirits.  He has some reflexive movement in his legs which I think is probably a very positive sign.  Don't read too much into that just yet as there is no telling what the real prognosis is... just hopeful that is good thing.  I am really just happy that it seems like he has a punchers chance of getting something back.  He is a strong young man and very determined so I think he will fight as hard as he can in physical therapy while down in Atlanta. More than one of you has asked me about an address to send donations.  I know GoFundMe isn't for everyone.  If you want to go that route, you can make a check to "Blackman Wrestling Club" and we will pass anything received directly to the Kinderdines.   Jacob Kinderdine c/o Blackman Wrestling 4836 Trevino Court Murfreesboro, TN  37128 Also, want to thank everyone who has donated so far.  Jacobs dad will take a month off work and stay in Atlanta with him.  They need to learn how to take care of him and do home therapy work..... and surely Jacob will be glad his dad can be there.  All that could not happen without you all.  Depending on what happens, they will probably end up doing some home remodeling in order to accommodate Jacob at their home.  Thanks again. Here's a pic I lifted from Facebook of Jacob on Oxy talking to his Uncle.  LOL
