Now, this is ridiculous! The game was cancelled. Do people in Memphis just not care anymore?? SMH

News Story

It was very terrifying to see this on this Live on the news..

bad as I hate it for the kids in Memphis giving their all playing a kids game without outside interruption as this ..

There is NO Way ANY / ALL playoff games need to take place in Memphis .. I realize in our time it could happen anywhere however this has happened several times this year alone..

TSSAA needs to react Quickly on this matter before someone or several get hurt or worse

You know it's pretty sad that a legitimate argument can be made to take measures such as this. It's high school football for gods sake, and we're worrying of the real possibility of a fatal incident occurring. Sadly I agree...Something needs to be done. It's only a matter of time before some loon opens fire inside of a stadium down there. I couldn't imagine the reprocussions of such an event. The days of decency are pretty much lost...and you know so when you open a newspaper and on more than one occasion see the news of a shooting near a high school football game. Whether it is banishing all playoff games from Memphis, or taking serious security measures such as armed officers at every entrance/exit, metal detectors, etc. something needs to be done, quickly...before we do wake up one day to that dreaded news.

Exactly my point..yes days of decency have far surpassed us..I see it everyday on the Memphis news as well as other places but number of population is far more there

we've played there several times lately..on entering parking we were guided by Memphis police / security into a very lighted are ,told to enter together with police escort, not go to concession stands or bathrooms ..otherwise stay on your side, watch game,go home ..they provide security measures but Will it always be enough ..one never knows for sure..I for one will never go again..dont go to memphis for anything the past 15 years..as I stated could happen anywhere but Memphis is Extemely Dangerous everywhere..sad for the kids playing / fans students not involved which are very few for most Memphis teams

TSSAA needes to take notice Quickly before the dreaded happens..also goes for all sports ..

Gunshots forced the suspension of a high school football game at Raleigh-Egypt High School on Friday night, with police responding to a shots fired call near the school's stadium for the second time in three weeks.

No suspects or victims were found at the scene, according to MPD spokeswoman Karen Rudolph.

The game had playoff implications for both Craigmont and East.

"We are going to meet on Monday and decide whether or not to re-schedule the game," said Smokey Gaines, the Memphis Interscholastic Athletic Association's athletic director.

Gaines added the decision to call the game was made by the game officials.

Shortly after 8 p.m., shots rang out and players from both teams were reportedly told to "get down." The game was suspended with 4:38 left in the first half and Craigmont leading 34-28.

Details on the exact location of the gunshots were unavailable.

On Oct. 7, police arrested three teenagers at Raleigh-Egypt who were firing shots from a vehicle after a football game. Two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old were arrested after officers recovered two guns from a Nissan SUV the teens were occupying.

There were no injuries in the incident.

"The guy wasn't shooting at the field, and I thought once they caught him they would re-start the game," said Craigmont coach Cecil Van Hooks. "But the safety of the players is first and foremost. We're just waiting on the powers that be to make a decision."

I'm glad Riverdale is in the east bracket. I don't want to go to Memphis and play... This is sad for both teams involved. Football games down there should be closed and for parents brothers and sisters of the athletes only. Yes alot of money will be lost but that's dangerous.

Sad thing is,not a lot of money would be lost. There are a lot of games played in Memphis where 100-150 paying "fans" would cover the entire attendance.Very inconvienant for the teams/fans,but maybe a secure, neutral field should be chosen and play 4 games there on Saturday in a few locations citywide.Daylight seems to dissuade some of the "thugs" brashness, and security would be easier for officials.Just a thought, maybe not plausable, but something has to be done.
