The Chattanooga Christian boys and Montgomery Bell Academy tennis teams both went on the road Wednesday to record identical 5-4 wins.

CCS stayed undefeated with a victory at Heritage (Ga.) High School while two-time defending D-II state champion MBA edged Baylor.

MBA 5, Baylor 4

In a battle of D-II East/Middle tennis powers, MBA (3-3) won four of singles matches to rally to beat Baylor (2-3).

As it did in the state finals of 2010 and 2011, Baylor had the upper hand in doubles, winning two of three on Wednesday (led 2-1 after doubles). At No.2 doubles, Baylor’s Eric Roddy and Marko Mandic rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 8-6.

And in a repeat of the last two state finals, MBA had to win four singles matches for the victory Wednesday.

In singles, MBA won two of the first three matches off the court to pull even at 3-3. The Big Red took its first lead of the afternoon at 4-3, as junior Aarron Jumonville defeated Anderson Scarpa, 6-4, 7-5 at No.1 singles.

Baylor quickly tied the match (4-4) as Jackson Pride defeated Andy Karpos, 7-6 (3), 6-4 at No.4 singles and the match would then be decided at No.5 singles.

MBA sophomore Kalyan Chadalavada was up a set and up a break in the second, before Jack Gray rallied to win the second set and force a deciding third. Chadalavada found himself down two service breaks at 3-0 before winning six of the final seven games for the win.

“This was a big win for Kalyan as last year his match proved to be the deciding team point and he came up short a couple of times, bur today was different,†said MBA coach Tom Boysen, whose team has won six of the last seven matches with Baylor.

Looking to the State Tournament: The win for MBA is a big step is securing the No.1 seed in the Middle/East Region for the state tournament in May, while the No.2 seed will be in the same half as Memphis University School (MUS), which is annually the top team in the West Region.

Strong Schedules: MBA and Baylor will see each other again next weekend (April 13-14) at the Chattanooga Rotary tournament … MBA, Baylor, McCallie and MUS will also compete in the Fred Carter Invitaional in Nashville (April 27-28) ...

4-4 is Good: At the start of the season, MBA coach Tom Boysen told his players that to be 4-4 after the first eight matches would be a good accomplishment ... MBA opened the season with a 4-3 loss to 2011 D-I state runner-up Brentwood High School led by Maxx Lipman, followed by going 2-2 (placed fifth) at the DeCoTurf Championship (Louisville, Ky.) last weekend.

MBA, now 3-3 on the season, hosts St. Xavier (Ky.) on Thursday and later in the season travels to MUS. St. Xavier finished fourth at the DeCoTurf Championship.

Next Matches: Thurs, April 5 ... Baylor hosts Lone Oak (Ky.) and MBA hosts St. Xavier
