They danced and they pranced. They shaked and they baked. And then did the dance craze known as the Wobble. It’s their grandparents’ version of the Twist, the Mashed Potato and the Bristol Stomp.

Members of the Notre Dame girls’ tennis team were all smiles as they celebrated their district championship late Thursday afternoon, appropriately enough in the Champions Club parking lot.

The Irish defeated Signal Mountain, 8-1, to clinch the District 7 A-AA title, ending a 15-year title run by Chattanooga Christian. The Signal Mountain boys edged Notre Dame, 5-4, and finished second to district champ CCS.

“We have been working for this championship since December and practicing our dance moves every Sunday afternoon,†said a smiling Callie Voges, the only senior on the team who won her singles (No.3) and doubles (No.2 with Katie Joyce) matches against the visiting Eagles.

While they do the Wobble in parking lots across the city, their forehand winners, overhead smashes and crisp backhands down the line are anything but shaky, as evidenced by the undefeated season – 8-0 overall and 4-0 in district play.

“The girls have worked real hard for this championship and everyone at Notre Dame is excited for them,†said Irish head coach Anne Ricksecker.

“I am proud of the way all our players played today,†said Signal Mountain coach Keith Dressler. “The guys did a great job of taking two of three in doubles to clinch the win and finish second in the district and even though the score was 8-1, the girls played a real tough match against the champions.â€

What’s Next: Notre Dame plays Van Buren County Friday in the final district match of the season, followed by Senior Day by a non-district match with Hixson (Senior Day) on Monday.

District Tournament: The individual singles and doubles tournament (2 singles and 2 doubles entries per school) is May 7-8 at the Champions Club.

    • Why would the tax payers be responsible for paying for only a coach? In recent years with all the theft from various programs in schools from different programs with booster clubs (not just sports) the State of TN has made alot of rules surrounding booster clubs and how they handle money.  I have two documents to review, 1 is 40 pages from the state comptroller and the other is 37 pages from my district, so I can consider starting a booster club for my middle school program. It has been too much trouble in the past for the other coaches.  There is no way there needs to be an adult in the school building for 7 hours a day with no responsibilities except coaching.
    • The only thing that was said at half time of the 45-0 game was Coach Story, he said: "I know y'all have been out there a lot, but kick-off team, y'all need to get down there faster!" Then he and the other coaches proceeded to go into the coaches office and we all went nuts!  It was the only time I can ever remember coaches not saying anything at half time. Definitely a great memory!!!
    • Boyd could actually be a grade below what he is now, but his parents didn't see the need to "redshirt" him like the other city school down the road would have pushed for....
