D1 Talent in SE Tennessee

Murphy Fair (dot com) recently released their annual "top prospects" lists, where they poll all high school coaches asking them to submit potential collegiate prospects, then to classify them by projected division of play (D1, D2, NAIA, etc.) Looks like the D1 talent pool is growing in the southeast corner, and the overall talent in the state appears to be ramping-up!

Based on those who responded, here are the projected D1 prospects from the SE corner of our state:

BAYLOR

Reggie Upshaw Sr WR

Michael O'Connor Soph QB

BRADLEY CENTRAL

Eduardo Trevino Jr. DL

Austin Sanders Sr. OL

CHATT. GRACE ACADEMY

Will Slack Jr. RB

CLEVELAND

Robert McMahan III Jr. OL

Austin Herink Jr QB

Austin Massey So QB

McCALLIE

Eric Wolf Sr LB

McMINN CO.

Patrick Priest Sr. OL

OOLTEWAH

Brady Binder Jr. QB

RHEA CO.

Jacob Revis Sr. OL

SIGNAL MOUNTAIN

Reese Phillips Sr. QB

Harrison Moon So TE

SOUTH PITTSBURG

Demetric Johnson Sr. Ath

TYNER ACADEMY

David Powell Sr. OL

Of course, some coaches didn't submit a response, some submitted responses that didn't contain D1 prospect assignments, and some didn't assign a division (Boyd Buchanan). It's likely that there are more to be added, but this is a respectable crop of talent.

Of particular note were the three sophomores that are already projected as D1: Moon at Signal Mountain, Massey at Cleveland, and O'Connor at Baylor. Will be fun to watch them all for a few more years. popcorneater.gif

East Hamilton favored to win 6 AA, see article in Nooga.com .

Canes will be the team to beat this year. If they can keep everybody healthy, add a passing game to their running attack and maintain their defense, they will go all the way this year. They keep a low profile, but this team has some talent that will shine this year. RB Logan Jackson, TE, FB Francisco Rodriquez, LB Harrison Warren are all be being recruited by D1 schools.

Just reporting what's posted. Coaches are polled about their talent and asked what level they project them to play at. EH coaches listed players, but none of them were considered D1. Time will tell.

McMinn Central has a couple or three juniors that will get alot of attention this year if they can string togather a few wins. If Boyd can stay healthy he'll put up some big numbers and a couple of juniors on defense looks really good but we'll have to wait to see if they can make a difference. Look at MLB position and DE see what you think.

Sure would like to see Coach Goodin and the Chargers have a good year. They've all suffered enough. I always hurt for 4-year players at the end of their time when they haven't tasted much success. Those kids deserve a positive experience.

With a lot of rural schools, it's as much about timing...getting enough athletes and enough combinations of athletes..to be successful. That's why it's such a big story when a small school maintains a successful run.

Denzell Boyd should have a good season if he stays healthy and rises as a leader.

Good luck to Central!

Ok, after the scrimmage Saturday I have to say maybe another jr should have some attention, RB #32 Johnson looked good. Boyd could not attend the scrimmage because of a family issue but he didn't seem to be missed much. DE #17 had Bradley QB scrambling and a good stop on the RB for a lose. FB #11 Barnett looked strong too.

    • Yep..could possibly have 3 teams ranked in top ten in the same four team district.
    • He had an opportunity to be the OC at TC without final say in the offensive gameplan. How does that work? Smh. Head Coaches are public figures regardless of the community size, and yes there are some out there, it’s irrelevant and not fair to them to name them on here. Also why is said “head coach” the head coach of the MS baseball program to begin with? Oh because no one wants it. As for the Lebanon question, I know what I’ve been told so just going off here say, some of the boosters were not happy with his roster decisions and wanted him out. Although he lead them to 20+ wins in multiple seasons
    • A head coach in the school system? No I dont think so. Head coaches are public figures in small communities. Not trying to slander, but this is an actual question. Do you know why he was forced to resign at Lebanon? This was his second chance.  He already left trousdale once and had an opportunity to come back a couple of years ago but spoiled that.
    • Are you perfect? Nope no one is, at the end of the day there are several teachers/coaches and even some in the Trousdale County school system that have DUI’s on their record. You’re correct on it being a bad mistake and it unfortunately could have ended horribly. While you consider the consequences minimal, I can assure you they are not. Ultimately I hope and have faith that he will learn from it and use it to better himself.
