Question about Club/Travel Volleyball

As far as I know, the 50% rule only applies to basketball, softball and baseball. Somehow the TSSAA has overlooked club volleyball and soccer at this point in time.

The thought (at least as far as volleyball is concerned) is that in rural areas a rule like that would limit the ability to participate since there are relatively few clubs. Some clubs are made up totally of HS teams -- girls would have to travel upwards to 2 hours to find a club in a major metro area.

If a 50% rule were to be instituted, it would only apply to 15 and up as the TSSAA only has jurisdiction over High School sports.

HS coaches are prohibited from coaching their own players in the off season. Many HS coaches can be seen coaching girls that are 14 and under as they are not yet HS freshmen -- that is allowed. I don't know about giving lessons but I would suspect that is also considered 'coaching'.

What is the rule about how many high school girls from the same high school team can be on a travel/club team? I had heard at one time it was 3, but recently heard 2? Does anyone know? and does this just pertain to 15 and up?

Also, if a coach coaches high school, is he/she not allowed to coach any of those girls on a club team? or give lesson to them?

Thanks so much!!

On your TMSSa question for Middle Schools,Look on the TSSAA Home page on the right side at the bottom and you will find about as much information you want to look at and where you might find other information.

Also, a lot of clubs have their own rules as far as how many players from one school can be on a team. So the answer to your question, right now, is that there is no rule but under the clubs disgression and that is good because travel arrangements can be worked out by the club.

I do believe that HS coaches can coach their own players in club in the off season. There is one club in East Tennessee that the director of the club coaches the 18 team and is the head coach of a high school. There have been questions about that in the past to whether or not it is right for this coach to do that. I dont think anything is wrong with it myself. If the players are paying for off season club ball and the coach wants to coach them in the off season, then that is their business not the TSSAA.

I would like to know if it is legal or not though, but I doubt it is because it does go on out in the open.

The only age group that it can happen is after a high school player has used up their high school eligability. You will see that in every club in Tennessee I would expect unless there is a club rule. If for some reason a player uses up their HS eligability at age 17 then the next summer their HS coach can coach them. Most all Club coaches seem to be very careful of this rule. The rule that is most overlooked in club is HS coaching, FOLLOWING, their players on the bench especially if they happen to be directors of a club. Small problem but they are not supposed to do it. It does happen in every sport though. Opinion: HS Coaches who will have the interest in following their players in the summer on their own time while against the rules is admirable. Shows the interest in their craft. Some may do it to increast their skills in their craft and IMO should be allowed in the venue. Purely an opinion.

I really dont see the problem with it myself. I get a little tired of the government (TSSAA, etc.) telling us what to do and what not to do. If we find a really good coach that happens to coach club and high school, I think that is our business. The only argument I can see against it is it giving an unfair advantage to schools with money. But we have that anyway. At least in East Tennessee, the only school that has really good teams year after year with middle to low income families and very few club players (money), is Anderson County. The others are Hardin Valley, Farragut, Webb, CAK, (sorry if I did not mention them all). These schools have the money to have several players in club anyway. So I dont think it makes any difference about an unfair advantage. That is the only agument I have heard.

Please enlighten me to any reasons to the rule.

Thanks

Except for high School Coaches tp Coach their own players in the 9th 10th a 11th grade. Since there are so many variations of what you are asking and this site does not want to cause anyone to be ineligible, I would suggest you call the TSSAA in Hermitage to get specific information as to what you are trying to accomplish and they will absolutely steer you in the right direction. Volleyball is a very high caliber sport as you know and direcftiosn should be able to be given to meet just about any economic situation that can be found. You will find volleyball help in just about any rural community but it may not meet the caliber of what you are wanting. Try it first and if not your style, reach out a little further and you likely find what you want. No shortage of great teachers of volleyball in E. Tennessee, Middle Tennessee or W. Tennessee. Its a great game, Try it and you'll find your player will love it.

    • Ouch! If he's in the scrap business maybe
    • That's a nice story but has little to nothing to do with what we're talking about.
    • The winds of change are blowing in Hartsville.     Will be an interesting follow.    Would go back to the 90s and turn black the clock!
    • Did he promise you a coordinator job or something if he ever got a head coaching job? He resigned? He was at the top of the dugout last night calling plays. I wonder if those 30+ parents would let him give their kids a ride. by the way the board meeting was last night and it was not mentioned. must have been at the work session earlier this week which is not public. must be trying to keep it quiet.  Since you know so much, how much is Robbie Atwood willing to pay Adam Cothron?  Didn't you slander Eden earlier on here? You also didn't know he was a faculty coach again so how much do you really know? Some people outside this county baffle me with their need to slander others.
    • He resigned smh, and have you ever heard of charged but not convicted. Some people in this county baffle me with their need to slander others. Have you asked any of the 30+ parents that signed a petition to get him reinstated at the board meeting this week how they feel about this? Just let it play out, at the end of the day the only people that will bring TC back are the ones that know what its about at its core.    People hate losing and they aren't used to it at TC. I for 1, and I'm sure others too, understand having a dip in talent and not being able to compete for a state title every year. But in the past, TC teams have outworked more talented teams, they didn't continuously lose the turnover battle, they didn't commit 8+ penalties in several games each season, and I believe several of the folks in town that want Blake out feel as if he is neglecting the history of the program. This is from a source that used to be extremely close to the program (not me lol), Blake gets out of school midday and the players show up and there is no practice plan or itinerary.  I also understand those that are on team Blake, when he has loads of talent, he wins. He does know football and he is a tremendous DC, and if the rumors are true then he will do great things. As for the board member issue, it is what it is, everyone that's true to the county know that and nothing has changed. I agree though that they should strive to make the facilities as good as we can. And as far as potential candidates, I agree there is very few options. West, Vetetoe (yes I know), and couple others that could have some interest. Whatever happens is massive for the program during a pivotal time before the next big wave of stars make their way through.
