TSSAA Regional Meeting Agenda

Have seen the agenda and looks like their are three items that everyone will vote on.

1. to put all private schools in D11 and all public schools in D1....a complete split based on public or private

2. to allow home schoolers to compete in the zone that they live in at a TSSAA member school.

3. to allow soccer players to play in independent games.

IMO don't see the membership or the legislative council passing any of the three. However, I hear that the home school people are taking their cause to the state legislature.

Based on what other states do the TSSAA may want to take a close look at allowing the home school kids to participate in all athletic events. I think that most other states now all this to happen.

The TSSAA cannot afford another law suit (which is what would happen if they force a total split) in the near future. They haven't even reached a settlement on the BA/Carlton Flatt issue.

Each school/coach needs to decide if kids can participate in independent sports outside of the TSSAA. The smart thing to do for the TSSAA is pass the responsibility down to the local level (coaches) and stop trying to be big brother to everyone. Remember that Little League settled out of court in California for several million dollars because they suspended a player for playing in another league while playing Little League. Little League has since changed that rule. Would this not be the same thing?

cbg,

If we let home schoolers have the best of both worlds, then what do we tell all the schools that have been denied membership to the tssaa, who can't compete because they haven't met certain educational standards required by the association?

The proposal for a split of public and private is not being proposed by the tssaa but by one of its member schools. Will be shocked if it happens.

The independent game rule has been with us for a long time so I guess we like it. Their are exceptions to this rule, tennis, bowling golf...I think

Bearman,

Participation by homes school students at the local public school is the norm in most states. This was brought on by the legal community and like I said before the TSSAA cannot afford another big court battle. I don't have a dog in the hunt but I do know which direction this issue will go if changes are not made in the near future.

With regard to student/athletes participation in independent leagues, why not allow the coach to make that decision if the athletes are playing for them? Why do we need "Big Brother" TSSAA to step in and make a rule that denies athletes more competition if they desire it? The problem that I have is that the TSSAA is not uniformed on this rule. If golf, tennis and other sports can participate in outside leagues and competition why not basketball, football and wrestling? This could be another potential leal problem that could be avoided if handled properly.

Look, I am not against the TSSAA or athletics but I do feel that the TSSAA needs to become more proactive (prevent some of these legal battles that cost me the tax payer money) and sympathetic to the students that help pay their salary. If it were not for the athletes Mr. Carter and the other employees at the TSSAA office would be working in another field.

I have no problem with the idea of homeschoolers competing for their local public school, *but* the homeschoolers in that area should be counted in the school's classification.

As to the independent participation rule, that only applies during the season. Players are perfectly free to play independent games outside the season. As far as the sports with exceptions, I had some involvement with the decision to exempt bowling. Junior bowlers can earn quite a bit of scholarship money in tournaments, and most of the best players would not give that up to compete in TSSAA bowling. Thus, the decision not to force that choice.

Silverpie,

If you want to count the home school kids in the classification of the local public school that would be great. Let me ask just one question of you: How many home school athletes do you think that a school would have? My guess is that more than 10 would be a huge number and 10 kids would not change most schools classification.

Now with the issue of independent leagues: No one seems to want to touch the question of why the local coach should not make his/her own rule regarding the issue. Is the TSSAA required to pass a rule so that the coach does not look like a bad guy? Why is it fair for golf, tennis, and bowling to be allowed to participate in independent leagues and tournaments and not track, cross country and wrestling? Wrestling is an individual sport the same as golf, tennis and bowling. If one sport is allowed to participate in outside leagues then all sports should be granted the same freedom.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
    • Grandma from Heaven looking down at the field to see if that gulley washer rain this past weekend sent to make a dent on that paint that some are claiming washes off of turf. Nope looks like Krylon Tough Coat.
    • I was just talking to a guy the other night about the basketball impact.
