Well thats an issue to but I would like to ask BRB a question so I know who the conversation is with but not by name. Are you a parent at Bearden or are you just a fan or are you the Principal or are ytou a fan of another school. Where do you fit in that group?

PH...First of all. I am not like 90% of the people on here. I am not posing as an imposter. I will stand up and say who I am. I am a Bearden High School parent. It shouldn't really matter who I am unless you are trying to keep track of the people here. I posted this topic to let people know how I feel and to hear how others feel about it. My question to Engineer is for everyone...BUT you have to answer the question as I stated it. This is only to format the FINAL 8 teams tournament. Nothing else..

I will answer my own question very quickly..The tournament of the final 8 should be single elimination only. You lose you go home...

In 5 separate trips with 2 daughters (and 2 different schools) over a 7 year period, I saw the tourney run 4 different ways. They finally settled on this goofy format. IMO the best format was one year where there were 2 pools of 4 teams and round robins were played on wednesday, the teams were seeded based on the pool play, and then played single elimination. The worst may have been the next year when only the top 2 from each pool played in the single elim tourney. In one pool three teams went 2-1, and one went 0-3 . They flipped a coin to see which team was eliminated (not my daughter's school, but our rival).

This most recent format started 3 or 4 years ago. The coaches must be ok with it because it hasn't changed, but I think it is silly.

This is an opinion by BigRedBuck from somewhere around Bearden expressing his opinion on the STATE Tournament Format. His points are made and for those from the TSSAA looking in there are some good points about his point. We also appreciate his mention that "the man' Coacht runs a good Forum not only here but with everything he tries to do, he does know the excitable nature of High School Sports and all of us realize that this is a privledge the way we handle posting on this site and need to be careful how we handle it. Thanks.

Similar to smdad, I've been to state a few times with 3 different formats: 1) pool play followed by 8 team bracket, 2) pool play followed by 4 team bracket, and 3) current "double" elimination bracket. I agree that using pools to knock it down to 4 teams is unfair since the pools can be unbalanced. Pools and 8 team bracket is probably the fairest, but it takes more games to finish it. The current double elimination bracket is a good compromise. It does seem to get it down to the two best teams. Not requiring the "if necessary" game in the finals is the only thing that seems unfair.

If you view the first two days just as a way to narrow it down to the two best teams, then leaving out the "if necessary" game doesn't sound that bad. Certainly it sounds fairer than a single elimination bracket without any kind of seeding.

I'd be more concerned with the overall format that results in the top 3 Class A finishers being private schools, and two of the top three in Class AA. And the only public school in that group should have already been in Class AAA.

What's even better is the fact that GP who won AA will be competing in A next year.
