I like coach Scharsh I wish him the best. I feel that he is a great coach. He entered games with great strategy. He will find a place to coach.

I heard through the grapevine he was offered that job before season started but turned it down

I heard that as well. Didn't belive it however. I know the guy pretty well and I believe that he really wants to get back into coaching. Therefore I don't believe he would turn down a job opportunity. Just my opinion though.

OSK24: We were there together from 96-99. It was a good staff and some great football players. Those were GOOD TIMES at SHHS! I miss those days and think about you guys all the time. Maybe you should coach? You could sure teach the boys how to play LB and LIFT!

Who was the head coach and staff during that time period?

I hate to see anyone lose their job, especially one they love to do.

But SH's problems seem to go deeper than just the coach.

I laughed at some of the principals comments:

“I don’t expect our teams to reach the final eight every year, but I do expect them to be taught well enough to be competitive in games with schools similar to us,†Callahan said in the release. “I don’t believe it is a talent issue when you look at the success our baseball and boys’ basketball programs have had in recent years. It is clear our school has the athletes to be competitive.â€

Someone should let him know that the baseball team has about 29 on the roster and about 1-2 play football and the basketball team has about 10-12 with about 0-2 that play football on a regular basis. That's about 35+ "athletes" that aren't playing football.

“Hopefully we can get the new coach in place before the end of the year,†Callahan said in the release. “But if that doesn’t happen, I have faith in our existing assistants to teach the needed fundamentals to get our guys ready for next fall.â€

Aren't these the same assistants that helped to get the Coach fired?

I don't know what happened to this program staring in 1999, but they haven't been good since then.

Scharsch was actually one of the winningest coaches at SH during the last 15 years.

'08-'12: 16-35

'03-'07: 11-41

'98-'02: 16-36

They have only won more than 3 games/year since 1998: '98, '06, and '09 and only '98 and '09 finished the season with a winning record.

If anyone has any thoughts/reasons on what happened around 1999 to cause this fall for the last 15 years I'd love to hear it.

Glad to see you're ok 66. Hadn't heard from you in a while. Not a lot to post about I guess. But it's good to see an old-head on here..

    • As I said somewhere earlier in the thread, the original plans had no outdoor athletic facilities being part of the campus.  The original plan was for HVA to use facilities at nearby schools.  Very late in the process they came up with a plan and found budget to have minimal facilities and crammed them in to space that never was intended for athletic facilities.
    • Agreed, the way the field is turned you get the evening sun blasting right into the press box making filming a nightmare there, plus its so low.  The field is land locked and parking is a nightmare too. Seems like Knox County could have done a lot better there with the design and the quality.
    • I think this upcoming team may be pretty good, they will definately be better up front and if they can replace Dozier, Heyward and Rembert, they can be real good. They have the same strange schedule, but this time with 5 straight home games. The road games at Jeff County, Powell will be tough to open up with and the back side at Bearden is the tough game there.  One question I had if anyone knows: There has been some talk of an indoor practice facility in the past, with the new track area now more of a track area, that kind of leaves a need for a football practice area. Just sayin....
    • I find it hard to believe that 70% of a schools enrollment is zoned for another school district
    • I was told that the indoor facility is happening regardless of the vote on the taxes but it would be a much bigger project with more funds if they vote goes through
