End of the Year Awards!

Now that the season is over, it times to give out some much deserved awards. Please add as you feel needed.

 

Coaches that Got to Go Award:

 

Nominees:

 

1. Jonathan Simpson (Germantown): That fact that he personally lost the match that would have sent his team to the Dual State Championships, makes him first choice for winning this award. His Attitude Help as well.

2. Rod Galvin (Bolton): Does he even care about the sport of wrestling and the Bolton wrestlers. He missed out on the State Championships to tend to his side MMA business. Me and my friends were at the V3 fights on Saturday.

Thank God he didn’t have any guys make the medal round. He would have missed it. Way to support the other teams/kids.

3. Israel Cordero (Arlington): This guy is the Head Coach of the Largest High School in the State. Arlington has more wrestlers than any other program in the Memphis area. Why are they not winning? I’m mean come on. It’s not that hard to win in Memphis. Just ask Millington. Heck, just ask Cordova who took second in the Region with half a team. Yep, 8 wrestlers knocked out Arlington who had 40+ wrestlers on their team. So why are they not winning. It’s the same reason they have never won. It’s the Coach. He knows nothing about wrestling. He has a great feeder program and everything. When he was the head coach at Cordova, it was the same. No wins. When he left Cordova, Cordova became a power house team the very next year and has been one ever sense. It’s time to step aside Dude. Please for the sake of the good kids and families that are in the Arlington program. Step down and let someone else run that team. With the size and the athletes at Arlington, it would only take 1 good coach and they could become one of the great power teams across the entire state.

And one last point, Arlington has a really good football program with a coach that loves the sport of wrestling. I had a few beers with the guy a few days ago and he told me that he currently refuses to allow his players to wrestle. Says he does not get along with the wrestling coach and the way he runs the team. I think we all would agree that any successful wrestling program needs to be on good terms with the football program and its coaches. Many great wrestlers can potentially come from the football team.

1. Brian Loeffler (Cordova): This Dude won all year with half a team. He also finished the season with 2 state medalists and 10th place in the state championship.

2. Thomas Graham (Collierville): Collierville always seems to put everything together to win the Big Title. Once again they did it this season. They finished the year as District and Region Champions.

3. “Papa Bear†Chris Lewis (CBHS): WOW, WOW, and WOW! 2 x Dual State Championship and 2013 Individual State Champions. This is something no other Memphis team has ever done. This team was sick. I got to watch them several times and they were just plan nasty on the mat. I wish we could see this every year in Memphis. The Chattanooga Area is spoiled and saturated with this type of wrestling year in and year out. Papa Bear has got his team going in the right direction.

 

Un-Coach of the Year:

1. Israel Cordero (Arlington): At the Regional Duals: In the first round, Arlington lost to Cordova and Collierville beat Bartlett. Leaving Collierville and Cordova to wrestle it out for the Championship. Collierville goes on to win and because there is a true second rule, the winner between Bartlett and Arlington will have to wrestle Cordova for the true second. Cordova has already beaten Arlington so unless Bartlett beats Arlington, the Dual is over and Cordova and Collierville will represent Memphis in the State Duals. Cordero pulls the ultimate douchebag decision and forfeits most of their matches so that Bartlett will win and force a match between Cordova. What was the conversation you had with your team going into the Bartlett match Mr. Cordero? Maybe something like this? “I know that you all have worked pretty hard this season, but I’d like you to give up any hopes you had at becoming regional champs as a team. We’re going belly up & throwing in the towel. And by the way, when you grow up and face a real adult situation outside of high school, take this lesson with you and know that giving up is better than fighting it out.†Another reason you should go.

2. Jonathan Simpson (Germantown): At the first round of the Region Duals, Germantown was wrestling Cordova. The match was extremely close and was going down to the last match. Cordova was going to have to win by bonus points in order to win the dual. With a few minutes left in the 3^rd period Cordova was only winning by a few points. Germantown was going to win the dual by criteria. Wait, Jonathan Simpson is going crazy on the side line. Yelling at the referee and walking towards the table with a serious attitude. The referee stops the match and deducts a match point for mis-conduct. Cordova ends up winning the Dual by the first criteria: Mis-conduct. Jonathan personally lost the match for his hard working team and cost them the trip to State Duals. BTW, thanks for your acknowledgment and apology on facebook.

3. Jonathan Simpson Again! (Germantown): My nephew wrestles for one of the local youth programs so I got to witness the worst run tournaments of all time. The so called “Youth City Championships†hosted by Germantown. First the brackets. It’s very clear to me as well as all the wrestlers, other parents, and coaches that the organizers of this tournament are more about making a quick buck than getting these kids mat time. Most of the brackets only had 4 wrestlers in them and several only 3.

Most coaches would have had a round robin bracket for both the 3 and 4. Instead they put them in a regular bracket. Most kids only got 2 matches with several getting only 1. (Including my nephew). These parents wasted all day, $10.00 per wrestler, and $7.00 per parent to watch their child wrestle 1 or 2 times. It was a complete JOKE to call this the Youth City Championships. Oh, then let’s talk about the awards and the presentations of the awards at the City Championships. They called the kids up to some lame table (not in order, but scattered between weight classes and age divisions) and gave them a super cheap plastic looking metal in a plastic bag. Not on a ribbon like every other tournament, but in a plastic bag by itself; medal only. It’s clear they don’t care about youth wrestling or the future of wrestling in Memphis. Please, will someone step up in 2013 and host a better ran Youth City Championships for these hard working kids.

 

Wrestlers of the Year:

 

1. The Entire CBHS Team: I sure wish I could have seen them Win the State Title this weekend. I did get to see them earlier in the year and Man they are tough. CBHS has put Memphis back on the wrestling mat. Can’t wait to see what’s next for the Brothers. Seeing their youth program several times this year, they will be back in the hunt next year.

2. Byron Sims (Cordova): I got to see him wrestle at several duals this year. Wrestles very tough. Byron was Runner up at the State Tournament.

3. Zack Sumner (Collierville): I have not seen him wrestle. Zack placed 3^rd at State. He upset several good wrestlers that I have seen wrestle.

4. Derrick Tucker (Germantown): Also got to see him wrestle in several duals. Great way to finish off his career by placing 3^rd at State.

5. Jordan Davis (Cordova): Glad to see that Jordan placed 3^rd at State. Good kids. Hope to watch him at the next level. He could be a beast.

For Coach of the Year, i feel like i must add Kramer (Wilson Central) Peck (Ravenwood) and Roberts (Beech). Roberts and Kramer have both tremendously turned their respective programs into top dog teams. And Ravenwood always seems to pull it out at the end. But i dont know if anyone expected a 3rd place finish. Or a 4th place finish for Beech. Or a Runner Up in Duals for Wilson Central. These coaches are definately doing something right. With Beech and Central being a toss up in my book for Most Improved.

 

Also, for Wrestler of the Year, i cant help but add Jacob Stevens to your list of nominees. He dismantled everyone at State. Including Byron Smith. The kid is the real deal. One of the best ive ever seen.

I think this is the greatest memphis post ever... I agree about Simpson and costing his team the match... I also think its funny Simpson and coach Bradley chose not to wrestle the two better private schools every year in memphis...after years of experiencing how much they can't stand cbhs and sba they chose not to wrestle the better teams in memphis...Cordova coach Brian has always done a great job wherever he has been and has great assistant coaches to help him out... Never understood why arlington doesn't produce better teams with the athletes that they have

I am going to have to throw Randy Shelton (Greeneville) in the CoY award opinions. Randy took a team that qualified only 4 individuals for the state tournament and won the A-AA state duals. This is Greeneville's only state championship in many years and many appearances. Not only did they win, but in doing so, they upset East Ridge who took fourth, Hixon who took 3rd, and Pigeon Forge who had been ranked as the top A-AA team all year. It may not have been a perfect season, but he developed his mediocre kids into wrestlers capable of bringing home a state title. Being from Region 1, I am a little biased, I know. At midseason and even the start or Regionals, I'm not sure anyone projected Greeneville as a guarantee to be there, let alone win. They did so in close fashion as they squeaked out 4 very close matches with score margins of 10 pt or less in each win including Regions. Congrats and I wish him many more chance

Funny how MemPD hides behind his one post. His facts could make headlines if they were maybe close to truths. From my five years in the TN area and enjoying wrestling from this site, it is sad that so many jump on these band wagon posts. The only thing I see consistent is the soccerpimp jumps on ALL these type of threads. They offer no positive attempts to improve wrestling in this area but support trends of the times and slam those programs they can't jump on.

I don't know about that. He gave several specific cheers and jeers. Some of which, he is absolutely right on the money about. If west TN continues to develop better wrestling programs and tournaments, TN wrestling as a whole will be better for it.

 

Nobody is asking you to jump on this bandwagon. But, you don't have to turn it over either.

 

I hope your attempts to further TN wrestling on other threads in this forum is fruitful.

As of today, there are 851 views on this post. Not one person has come forward to say something positive about the guys that are heading up these high school programs. I am shocked! No not really. I truly believe that everyone feels the same as I do. It’s a shame. You have three really good athletic schools that are under achieving in wrestling all because of the leadership. I hear from several in our club that Germantown use to be a big Power House not only in the Memphis areas but across the state. What in the world happened? If you’re still trying to guess, I’ll tell you. JS happened. The way he treats his wrestlers and those involved with Germantown may be different. (And I can only hope it is.) But the way he treated young wrestlers and confused parents at the “Youth City Championships†was horrible. The way he treats and disrespects every other coach in the area is horrible. The way he carries his snub little attitude is horrible. And last, (for now) his ego is through the roof. Not even the Great Dan Gable, who has done everything there is to do in this sport, has an ego as big as JS. Mr. Simpson, what have you done in your life that gives you the right to treat people the way you do?

 

Please, if there’s anyone out there that can give me something positive here. I would love to think better of Mr. JS.

Someone's a little sour, but hey... at least you're putting your personal info out there first. This is the internet, by the way. In case you've never been on another message board or forum site before, it's well known as a risky and controversial maneuver to put your name out there. Plus, some people, like myself, enjoy the sense of anonymity that comes with a username.
