They have a new (took over three seasons ago) county A.D. and I know he's trying to change things but hiring former NFL players to coach without certification is not the way to go. Unless they don't have qualified men with high school coaching experience, no one should hire a non-certified football coach to be the head coach. People forget it is not just about X's and O's! It is about managing a program and knowing how to interact and motivate young boys.

I agree.Pro player does not equal good coach, especially in schools.Really did not know about hiring, just know some jobs in schools now are non-classroom positions.

Very well put BigRedBird, people fail to understand that just because you played the game doesn't mean you can coach it, and that's what I have been hearing from the parents, fans, alumni and even the kids that Stratford coach can't motivate them or even talk to them. Let alone the guy never played football in HIS LIFE!!!!!!

It is my personal belief that you should be at least 28 to 30 years old before you become a head football coach in high school. My reasoning on that age is you should have worked as an assistant coach under someone for a minimum of five seasons. If you graduate from college at age 22, then work as a teacher and assistant coach for five years (23-28), then you MIGHT be ready to take on the head position. I also think it helps to have kids of your own so you know what it is like to be a parent. Coaching HS football is not for everyone. It takes a certain kind of person to be a head football coach these days.

I like your thinking.

In all justice, the latest FB coach is a VERY GOOD Track coach (coached Stratford to a TSSAA Track title despite Stratford not having a track) who took the Football job out of necessity when the new HC Stratford hired post-Jason Smith left the job before coaching his first game.

All due respect, coaching football and track is no where near similar, honestly those kids could have won with anyone coaching. If you are fast you are fast, one kid got the 36 of the 64 points from the decathlon because he was a pure athlete that was rarely at practice.

I understand he took the it under technicality but that's why the job should have been reopened. The kids don't like him at all and they don't want to play for the guy. Hearing they only have 12 kids out for spring is not making it any better.

    • No sir. Not staying at East. But definitely not going to Elizabethton.
    • Football and basketball coaches should not be making 100,000 not teaching any classes unless their winning state championship every year lol
