Future of Midway High School

Has anyone heard about the Roane County property tax vote that was supposed to take place tonight? I heard on the news that Roane County residents are complaining about a proposed $.14 property tax hike in order to keep Midway High School open. I think that it is unbelievable that people do not value education enough to raise property taxes by such a meager amount. People should not EVER wonder why American children are falling behind children from other countries academically.

 

Of course, they may not close Midway High School if the property tax vote fails...they could always just not buy textbooks or cut sports teams

I'm not from Roane County, so I confess to not knowing about any potential waste of money by the school board. What have they been doing?

Our county mayor tried to warn us last year and the school board did not listen to him. The story below was published in June of 2012. You teachers have no one to blame but the school board.

Seeing as how the school has not asked for money in 20 years with the exception of when Harriman came back in the county maybe we also need to look at the county budget and some of the waste there. If the county knew the school was going to need money why did they not look at their budget. Both sides need to make cuts and find a way to reach an agreement. Jetpride the raises you keep talking about on every website were state mandated. It's not like school board just up and decided to give everyone a raise. By the time you factor in the rise in insurance costs most teachers actually lost money. Why do you have such a hate for teachers?

I don't hate teachers. The school board gave higher pay raises then required by the state.

Blount County was saying the same thing. That they was going cut teachers aids, well the wheel tax failed and now they found money to keep them. I just don't trust the school board

Don't forget that little scare tactic of "we're gonna cut blah blah blah then little Johnny won't have blah blah blah" in an effort to have a budget increase to get through a "crisis". Remember also that in the state of Tennessee once a school system has an expansion to their budget it CAN NEVER be reduced. Ole JP may be 100% right or 100% wrong, I'm not sure but I do know if you watch everywhere from time to time a school will have to do this that or the other if their funding is not increased somehow. Sometimes the funding is increased and sometimes it's not. . . either way there's not very many schools closing or cutting major sports. JMO

Also if you remember last year Knox County Schools was pushing for that huge tax increase of 35¢ & ended up getting 9¢, then suddenly the school board claim to find 14 million dollars they thought they did not have. I just don't trust the school board

I agree with you about Midway not closing, but there will be definite cuts that will greatly impact many people.
