Baylor volleyball compared to Soddy Daisy

Tonight's game against Soddy Daisy proved to me that you have got to hit the ball to win games. The Baylor girls were pounding the ball while the Soddy Daisy team seems to be a pushing and tipping team. It's hard to make it to state like that. Baylor will go far with there big hitters!!! Go Red Raiders!!!

thanks for your expert insight into the game the other night Greg. The thing is that Soddy Daisy like every other public school in Chattanooga have to play with the players in their area. They dont get to go out and hand pick and recruit the players they have. You really should try to compare apples to apples when you want to make any more comparisons and tell everyone how great the big red is. Its statements like that make everyone in the area not have much respect for those schools. If not for all the good players at the other public schools that Baylor steals they would have nothing.

AMEN!!! (lr6968)  I'm not singling Baylor out, but if everyone will look at past State Champions in class A, heck, ALL classes, you will see that it has been private schools that have won the majority.

I so wish that TSSAA would look into separating all the private schools into their own classes!  At least schools like Baylor and GPS have done so, but when you talk about others, they are in public divisions.  That's just not fair.

Take for instance my small rural school, we have about a 50 square mile radius or less to find and squeeze talent out of kids.  Not unless a parent wants to pick up and move their family to a zoned region, even if it's just across the road, they are not allowed to play a varsity sport.  Then tell me, how can you take a school and let anyone attend as long as they have the money to pay and it doesn't matter if they come from GA or where ever, they can play and be eligible!?!  Absurd!

I know that parents work very hard to send their kids to private schools..they make sacrifices to send thier children to privates.  But we all know that some of the motives of some families are to get their children to schools that have alot of talent. With public schools, especially small public schools, you NEVER know what kind of talent you are going to have!

I agree that Baylor and other private schools get some good athletes but there are still some great athletes in public schools. I don't think Greg was saying that Soddy didn't have a good team or that Baylor was a better team just that Soddy didn't hit the ball. I have to agree if a team doesn't hit the ball they are not a big threat!

GOOD GOSH! Volleyball 101 teaches most people that if you're 5'7" and there is a 6'0" blocker

across from you, you should do something other than swing hard. No matter how hard you hit it,

a taller blocker has the advantage. I've seen a lot of tall teams get beat by smaller teams

that can hit "smart" shots.

I cant speak for everyone at the private schools but my daughter wasnt stolen from any other high school. Baylor or GPS was always going to be where my daughter was going to attend when we realized the level of competition was much higher in the Chattanooga area. Most Chattanooga high school coaches dont just coach the kids at their schools they coach the kids at all the other schools including Baylor. If a girl is a great player her high school coach gets her a few months and her club coach gets her much longer. We get to watch great volleyball because these dedicated club coaches teach them the real game in the high school off season. Coach Johnson coaches the girls that Soddy Daisy plays against during the club season and so do most all of the other area high school coaches. Thank God for all of them if your daughter is a volleyball player. I can only speak for my daughter when I say that she didnt come out of the womb playing volleyball and then ended up at Baylor because she was a great athlete. As a family we havent went on a summer vacation the last three summers. Instead they were spent at volleyball camps, playing beach volleyball and a couple of hours a day in the weight room. I am sure that most of all of the folks on this message board realize that hard work and playing against good competition is what makes an athlete better. You shouldnt stop playing schools because they have a group of girls (mostly freshman) that are pretty good players. I wish we could play Blessed Trinity, Hill Crest (public school from SC), Knox Webb and Goodpasture every week. The team would get better or learn to take a whipping. Competition is where its at. Work hard in the off season come in ready to play and represent Chattanooga when the state tournament starts. Dont play the teams you know can beat and expect to get better. Coach Johnson knows her stuff. If you had got the scouting report roll shots and tips were what to do against Baylor. Knox Webb kicked our butt again tonight wish we played them once a week like CAK. Playing the good teams makes you better, dont be hatin'.

Flying J- we are lucky in Chattanooga that we have high school coaches that see the big picture of helping kids.  Johnson, Lail, Brock, and the new coach Wood do a great job of this.  I think the kids can get real training during High School season having to work harder with sometimes less skilled team mates.  I think you also have the big picture of going extra to allow your daughter to go to the private school and take your vacation at camps and gyms.  Enjoy.

Sacrifice is what it takes to get into the M B or GPS be it grades, skills, or financial, if the spoon in your mouth ain't silver. My kid like me was going to her school / my school/ my mothers school / my grand and great grandmothers school before she was born. It's a huge sacrifice and its well worth it. And I'm grateful for Brock and Lail as well. Club ball is a sacrifice too $$ and time to get better in hope for a chance to earn a college scholarship. And these young women bring it to the court and compete for each other to mostly empty stands. I celebrate their effort win or lose.

    • Couple of thoughts: 1.  I just don't understand all the intricacies in TSSAA transfer rules anymore.    William Blount had a kid that played the final part of the basketball season with them this year,  that played at Hardin Valley last year, and played football for Bearden this year.  I say that to say, I know the coaches and the AD and the Principal at WB and I will never believe they would do something they knew was wrong.  They are men of character.  I BELIEVE the same thing about the coaches and administration at Maryville.  Call me gullible, but these are men and women of integrity in my experiences with them. 2.  Much like the transfer of the Clemmer kid a couple of years ago, with Smith, the football team is getting a huge boost, but the impact on the basketball team will be just as great or maybe even greater.  With Smith playing post, it frees the Sigmund kid who will be coming back from injury, to play more with his face to the basket.  The Rebels basketball squad in my mind, will be "the program" in East Tennessee next year.
    • Could not agree more. After this year, McKenzie's new coach will have their work cut out for them. Staying in 1A would definitely be a huge plus. Most years there is not much difference in the top 5- 1A and 2A teams across the state, but after the top 5 or so there is normally a huge drop off for 1A. Regular season region play is a lot easier for 1A in West TN  right now.
    • Word is Jason Maxwell will be new AD - he is currently head baseball coach. Also heard Roc might be headed to Pope as an assistant coach.
    • you must not know how tssaa operates lol
    • I agree. A lot more people are starting to see what is really going on around here and how a certain few board members are abusing their power. Eyes are starting to open.
