MANCHESTER -- It has the feel of a Ryder Cup’s final day drama yet with six teams in the hunt instead of two.

 

Welcome to the final 18 holes on Tuesday of the TSSAA D-II AA boys state tournament here at WillowBrook Golf Club with defending champion Baylor (298) holding a one-shot lead over Middle/East region champ MBA (299), three over McCallie, Memphis University School and Ensworth (all at 301) and nine over Briarcrest (307).

 

“Our goal on day one is to break 300 and we did that, but we left some shots out there and could have been in the low 290s,†Partrick stated.

 

While the boys race is close, defending state champ Baylor girls leads region champ Ensworth by eight shots.

 

In D-II A, defending champion Franklin Road Academy girls and St. George’s boys hold comfortable 10 and eight shot leads, respectively.

Boys D-II AA

The cast of characters is interesting. Baylor has 16 titles, MBA has not won it all in three decades (1982), MUS last won it in 1996, Briarcrest’s lone trophy came in 1987, Ensworth has never won it and McCallie took first place in 2010-11.

 

Golfing History: MUS has two freshmen with golfing pedigree in every shot as twin brothers Goodman and Mason Rudolph are playing in their first state tourney.

 

Every 30 Years … the same tourney won by “Pops†– their grandfather Mason Rudolph for Clarksville HS in 1951-52 and their late father, Craig, in 1983 also for Clarksville with a 15-foot putt to claim medalist honors ... 30 years later, two more Rudolphs have their team in the hunt for a state championship.

 

Past Team Races: Partrick remembers 2008 as the last time the boys has been close after Day One as Baylor and McCallie were tied at 289 and MUS was third at 291. The Red Raiders won it that year with MUS second and the Blue Tornado third.

 

In 2005, seven shots sparated three teams – Knox Webb (290), Baylor (291), MUS (297) – after Day One and Baylor beat Webb in a playoff aftera 36-hole total of  583. MUS was at 602.

 

In 2004, MUS led by nine over Baylor, 300-309, and two more over Evangelical Christian (311) after Day One, but Baylor rallied to win by two …. 600-602 with ECS at 618 …Baylor’s Seth Brandon and Harris English shot 70s on the final day, while Chris Farnsworth was at 73 to lead the comeback.

 

D-II AA Boys

While McCallie’s Patrick McDonald holds medalist honors with a 67, Baylor and MBA had four scoring golfers all in the 70s.

Senior Blakesly Warren shot a 70 and sophomore Katherine Holmes carted a 75 to give defending champion Baylor an eight shot lead over Middle/East Region champion Ensworth, 145-153, while St. Agnes is third at 158, with GPS and Hutchison tied for fourth at 178 and Harpeth Hall in sixth at 187.

 

In the race for medalist honors, Warren (70) holds a two-shot lead over Lauren Wade (Briarcrest, 72), followed by Holmes (75) and Lindsey Miller (Ensworth) and Abby Heck (St. Agnes) at 76.

 

“I am not sure what it is about this course, but Katherine (Holmes) feels comfortable here and always shoots well,†said Partrick.
